Natural Gut Tension in a Hybrid

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be stringing a few rackets (same frame type - Wilson BLX Six.One Tour) with Natural Gut mixed with Luxilon BB Original. I was watching a video posted by Wilson Tennis on Facebook, and they were interviewing a stringer at the Australian Open who was stringing Henin and Clijsters rackets. Henin was stringing a full bed of Gut at 27kg (59.4lb) and Clijsters at 30kg (66lb). They seem really quite tight, which is to be expected with Natural Gut, but my question surrounds the stringing of the poly, in collaboration with the Natural Gut, given that with Poly you should be stringing "at least 10% lower", according to the Luxilon packaging. I presume they are referring to the Natural Gut when they make this claim. Therefore, should I be stringing the Gut at around 62lb, and the BB Original at around 56lb??

Also, some have said that they think that 56lb is too high for a poly as well, some suggesting around 50lb or so. If I had the Gut at 60lb, and the Poly at 50lb, would that differential be a big problem for me, or is that what I should be doing?

Any assistance on this one would be appreciated...

I play natty gut at 40 and poly at 35., I always use 5 lbs difference between gut and poly at any tension.

Are you using Natural Gut on the mains or crosses.

I have experimenting with the right tension and so far I think I will go with 57lbs for natural gut mains and 54lbs for poly cross. I might go a bit lower only if the poly is really stiff.

Since poly loses more tension than gut after stringing, shouldn't you string polys at higher tension?

Hey Guys,

I'll be stringing one racket with the Gut in the Mains, and another racket with Poly in the Mains.

Maui19 - isn't 57lb a lot for a poly?

Parasailing - isn't 57lb on the softer side for stringing Gut?

That's my dilemma really... I think that Gut should be strung at around 60 or so, with the Poly down around 53 or so. Has anyone tried such a big difference between the Poly and the Gut, and is that okay?

Thanks!

While 57lbs might be considered low for others, I find that anything higher is a bit too stiff for me since gut has excellent tension stability. I guess it really depends on a person's individual preference and also what type of racquet they are playing with. If you have a softer racquet, I guess 60lbs is fine.

It also depends on how soft your poly string is. Say you plan on using 60lbs for the mains, I can see stringing your poly around 55 to 57lbs if it's a soft poly like Polystar Energy. But if it's Alu Power, I would dial it back to 53lbs.

I have tried Alu Power in a full bed at 48lbs and to me it still feels stiff so it will come down to preference really but I think that would be a good starting point.

It might be for some people and some strings, but given that poly loses tension at a fairly high rate, I want to start on the high side. I'm also using WC Silverstring in the crosses, and it feels pretty good at 57#. I'd never go that high with something like Tornado or Pro Hurricane.

I don't mind such a big difference on my rackets, if it's poly hybrided with gut or a soft multifilament.

When you are hybriding, it's good to come down 2 or 3 pounds on the gut as the poly will slow down some of its power and playability. And increasing the poly's tension will kill some of its power, but give it more longevity. It may take a few tries to get a hybrid just right. But I think it's best to have the two strings within 3 and 5 lb. of eachother. If you want more power, I would recommend lowering each one by the same amount.

I normally use a multi mains/copoly cross hybrid and string the multi at around 52-54. I am about to try gut in the mains, so should I go a bit higher with the gut than multi? Maybe around 55 for the gut mains or higher?

There is no wrong answer for your question, but here are the thoughts:
1. Tighten it up to 55 of 56 to try to match what you're used to, or
2. Keep it at your normal tension so that you can compare them apples-to-apples.

I would tighten it a bit.

Sorry to thread jack but I have a couple questions also regarding hybrids with Natural Gut & Poly.

I currently play with a Babolat Pure Storm Ltd with a full bed of Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power 16L at 57 lbs and I want to try a hybrid set up with Natural Gut in the mains & ALU Power in the crosses & also ALU Power in the mains & Natural Gut in the crosses.

I am playing on grass courts only this season.

Questions:

1. Gauge – If I use the ALU Power 16L which of the following is the most suitable Natural Gut gauge in the mains and/or crosses?

•Babolat VS Natural Team Gut 17
•Babolat VS Natural ThermoGut 16 Touch

2. Tension – There should be around 3 lb to 5lb difference in tension between the two strings?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Gauge - Thicker gut with thinner poly

Tension - yes

Since poly loses more tension than gut after stringing, shouldn't you string polys at higher tension?

I cross with Topspin Cyber Blue, which is higher powered. This allows me to go up one more pound, which makes it a 3 pound difference rather than 4 and helps it last a little longer.
