Current frame: 97sq in, 16x20
Reference Tension and string: 17g Tonic natural gut mains 60lbs, 18g Gosen OG Sheep (mono synth)crosses 58lbs

New frame: 102 sq in, 16x20
I will be stringing Luxilon Ace 18g in the mains, Gosen OG Sheep 18g in the crosses.

Mains tension: ??? Crosses tension: ???

Thanks in advance!

18 Ga Ace? Thats-a-thin-string! Unless you plan to restring very 4 hours, I would seriously consider 17 or 16 Ga. Thicker gauge will help maintain tension, assure more longevity, enhance shock reduction and have lower DT at any ref tension you select. DT will definitely be lower for 16 Ga than 18 Ga at ref tension 54#.

Since this is an initial guess, string both at 54#. This is a Babolat C Drive or Zylon?

both good suggestion by @blai212 @esgee48
I like the tension difference suggested by @blai212 a little more, from past experience on this type of combo
I would also like to know the suggested range for that racquet!?!?,, that usually is my starting point

This is how I figure first guess for a new string/racket combo.
Poly 15% lower than gut
Poly 10% lower than syngut or multi
Calculating:
Mains go from 60lbs to 51lbs
Crosses go from 58lbs to 52lbs
So, both about the same
THEN - Adjust for head size 102sqin/97sqin about 5%
So add about 2.5lbs and average out = 54lbs mains and crosses

Then see how it feels.
Only thing I would question is whether there is any longevity at all using the 18g string.

@NLBwell - you think too much to come to the same conclusion I came to. Nothing wrong with it, but we are all guessing for the 1st string job. I rather use the time to watch TV and have a cold one of something or other. I have the same reservations about using 18 Ga. Longevity and 18 Ga are at polar extremes. :giggle:

I get that, but I detailed it all out so that others who read this thread (with different string setups and rackets) can use it as a rule of thumb.
