NCAA tournament 2023 will not be televised

I have never watched a college soccer match on TV and don't know of any pals that do.

I have watched one college lacrosse match because my son was thinking of attending the school so it was fun for us to watch the team in the playoffs. Otherwise nothing. In fact I noted how unwatchable lacrosse is on TV. They really need that glow-puck thingy in college lacrosse as with all the players running this way and that shaking their basket things there is no way one can tell who has the ball. That said, there is no way there are more viewers of college lacrosse than tennis.

You think people are watching lacrosse in Dubuque, Iowa? Come on!

College lacrosse is isolated and limited to the northeast part of the US only.

I don't watch college soccer either but I am just telling you what I see on TV. I see a lot of college soccer broadcasts on ESPN/SEC network and ESPN/ACC network. I also see quite a bit of lacrosse coverage on ESPNU as well. Certainly a lot more than college tennis coverage on either TC, ESPN or Fox Sports FS1.

You do realize don't you that ESPN has regional coverage and what you watch on ESPN and what I watch on ESPN can be different things at the same time?

You can't compare college tennis with college lacrosse or college soccer. Soccer and lacrosse have a lot more followers/viewers than tennis. You can watch live college soccer (on ESPN/SEC network) or live college lacrosse (on ESPN/ACC network) but no college tennis on either one. Heck, I even see spikeball events on ESPN but no college tennis. No one cares about college tennis on TV. Sad but true.
Cue the overgeneralizations and red herrings that spring from this keyboard. I don’t believe you have ever watched a college tennis match between, say Texas and Baylor.

Yes, I do know that; however, I can watch ESPN on the West Coast by having TVs streams it back to me on the East Coast over our corporate VPN. Even then, no college tennis.

the problem is tennis has multiple matches going on. it's only one match/game with soccer and lacrosse, that's a huge advantage. My guess is that TV is looking for two hour increments. It's impossible to have a college match finish in two hours.
That's fair. They could focus on the first two lines though.

UVA is probably the only Division 1 match that i have seen. the match between Texas and Baylor took three hours, that's too long for ESPN etc. which schools have the best streaming?

That’s a really good question and maybe some frequent posters can let us know. I’m thinking that live streaming is the way to go. Maybe YouTube TV? Also the argument above about conferences and ADs controlling access to tennis is not wrong and remains a big problem. The ITA would do well to look into this and seek public input.

Many schools have good to excellent streaming capabilities today. Too many to mention. I caught most of the away D1 matches I wanted to watch last year tuning in to the live stream. I believe that's the way the NCAA wants to go with most non-revenue sports. Although I said that a few years ago, I've yet to see the NCAA step in this arena so far. Maybe they have their hand in the few streams that require a subscription that I did not choose to watch.

ITA needs to work on a lot. Right now they are on a quest to equalize the rules between D1, D2, D3, NAIA, etc. which is a stupid quest. The divisions are not the same by intent so imposing the same rules on them simply for the sake of consistency when they are not consistent is stupid. They have different funding, season lengths, schedules, number of matches, ability to secure officials, travel length, types of players. Nothing is the same. So why impose the same rules?

Anyway, I am off on a tangent.

ITA is very much like a government bureaucracy. No bureaucrat wants to give up power, and it always wants to impose burdens on everybody else whether you like it or not.

I saw some of the streaming from UVA and Virginia Tech and they looks so bad. Then again, it is free so you get what you pay for I guess.

Yeah college tennis is hard to watch not in person. 6 matches at once is hard to show. But I don’t get why they didn’t do it anyway it’s just one match.

The most popular NFL 'game' in any given week is the Red Zone Channel.

So I'd argue that with a good producer college tennis would be awesome! You have six courts to choose from, there is always something interesting happening.

the Red Zone is basically when the team has chance to score. You can't apply the same logic to college tennis. The Red zone channel was popular when it was free back in the day. i don't subscribe to it anymore. college tennis is not a good product for TV.

So you used college lacrosse in your higher viewership justification earlier knowing it is only an east coast thing just because?

That's exactly my point. Even with ESPN regional coverage, there is not enough interest to broadcast college tennis whereas there is enough interest to broadcast college lacrosse.

Or it could mean that there are a concentrated number of lacrosse viewers on the east coast. That though doesn't make a point about tennis viewership just as all the bull riding and rodeo shown in Texas doesn't prove it is more popular than lacrosse in the east coast. How much Rodeo and bull riding are you watching there?

I live in the East coast and CBS sports show PBR series regularly on during football season whenever there isn't a double-header NFL games. PBR is shown regularly on CBS sports cable channel on a regular basis during the fall and winter season. That's what I am seeing on my cable TVs

If you can watch PBR in the US Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic TV market but no college tennis on TV, it means college tennis is in serious trouble. Not enough viewers to make the business profitable, even with the pay per view model.

You have convinced me. I am going to pursue a career in professional bull riding where all the fans are. Who is joining me???

Can someone tell me where I can find one sturdy leather glove, a big belt buckle, and a hat?

I'm not one to talk you out of pursuing your dream, but if it's a TV fan base you're looking for I might suggest professional corn hole. Much better profile in terms of likely career longevity, financial barriers to entry, and athletic/training demands. Most of the corn hole athletes I see on ESPN appear to embrace a training regimen that focuses primarily on clipping coupons for great deals on 12 packs...

I've been to a few tennis matches at UVA and I can say that the interest outside of the players' relatives is very much ZERO.

Of all the stupid bob quotes, this one takes the cake.

I go to a lot of UVA matches with a lot of fans who are not related to anyone on either team. Mind-boggling ignorance.

Kyrgios and Osaka are bringing pro pickleball to Miami. The trend’s here to stay. Unfortunate reality is that apart from the ATP tour, there’s limited interest in tennis as a spectator sport

Since you make that stupid claim, do you have any evidence to back it up that there are a lot of fans at UVA tennis matches who are not related to either teams? Before you run off your mouth, there are more people watching the UVA women volleyball team game than people watching the UVA men tennis matches, and that the women volleyball has a losing record.

Zero is a finite number. The men's tennis team averages roughly 300 fans a game, which is less than a lit spirts including W volleyball. You are wrong with your Zero proclamation. sheesh, we know tennis is at the bottom of the barrel in college spectator sports. At UVA more than family members attend is the bottom line.

I've always wondered about college golf attendance. Can't be any better than tennis.

Really? That's not what I saw a couple of months ago between UVA and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Virginia (Fri-Sunday). I only saw matches on Saturday and didn't see that many people there. Zero means the number of spectators is negligible.

It is just as bad as tennis, if not worse.

Lots of hand wringing over the TV thing. Something tells me that traditional cable TV broadcasts may not be the future of watching programing.

I know many of the fans personally, and know that they have no relation to the players. I am not going to dox the individual fans by naming them, but I know people who post on the UVA tennis board and we meet each other over the years at matches. I know a couple from church, a few couples from our kids' school, etc.

Just as a general rule for future discussions, to save yourself some time: I know a lot about UVA tennis, and you know very little.

Look buddy, I've never claimed to know about UVA tennis better than anyone. I am just a person who my adult children happen to attend UVA so I go there to visit them, and I watched several UVA tennis matches while I was there in Charlottesville. I also went to Blacksburg to visit my relatives and saw VATech play while I was there. I don't know anything about UVA or VATech tennis programs, I only know them from watching them several times when I was there. If you said that you know more about UVA tennis than I do, good for you.

That being said, I can say that there were NOT that many people watching UVA tennis matches when I was there, and I had been to about four separate events. The same goes with VATech. I went to a UVA volleyball game and there were a lot more people there watching the women's volleyball than at UVA tennis events.

Nobody tells you to name them. Just send a few photos to backup your claims that there are MANY people watching UVA men tennis.

Let's see if Bob can do a little arithmetic. Half the players on the UVA men's roster are from overseas. Their parents are going to come for maybe one dual match a year, plus a tournament like the NCAA or ACC tourney. Can't really see them attending every match.

Ditto for domestic recruits from out of state. Not going to be there every match. But even if they were, that would be a number of parents in the single digits.

So, if there is near-zero interest from non-parents, average attendance at UVA home matches would be about 6-10 people.

Is the challenge here to provide a photo of a UVA men's match with 20+ people in attendance? Seriously?

I'd be willing to accept a photo of just 15 people if you can also get some wildlife in there - say a duck or a deer.

Attendance: 0

Therefore, neither 0 nor 265 is an accurate number. I am guessing it is between 10 and 15 in attendance if you also include a few ducks and deer.
I was hesitant to return to the discussion but will try one more time.

I noticed this is an away match. Most likely UVA did not get the attendance figures from Florida (or bother asking for them) and thus just left the figure blank. I doubt very highly the place was empty. A few winters ago I had the opportunity to attend a match of University of Michigan hosting Washington. There were about 500 people there. I had no skin in the game (not a parent) and saw familiar faces from tournament travel to know they were not parents either.

The way the big oil industry is giving money to a corrupted congress, there will not be any ducks or deer left in the near future.
