In the open era no male player won his first French Open title when he was the #1 seed.

When they won their first FO:

Kodes was the #7 seed

Borg was the #3 seed

Lendl was the #2 seed

Courier was the #9 seed

Kuerten was not even seeded

Nadal was the #4 seed

The players mentioned above all won at least one FO as the #1 seed but it was never their first FO.

Federer was number 2, behind Nadal... He got back to number 1 after winning Wimbledon...

Agassi was number 13 and on his way up from ranking of around 140 at the beginning of the year...

Gimeno was the #6 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Năstase was the #2 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Panatta was the #8 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Vilas was the #3 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Wilander was unseeded when he won his first RG.

Noah was the #6 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Chang was the #15 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Gómez was the #4 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Bruguera was the #10 seed when he won his first RG.

Muster was the #5 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Kafelnikov was the #6 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Moya was the #12 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Costa was the #20 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Ferrero was the #3 seed when he won his first and only RG.

Gaudio was unseeded when he won his first and only RG.

Could this be a bad omen for Nole?

I'm bumping the thread after RG this year when Nole fails to win the title again.

It's an interesting coincidence, but nothing more.
Same thing when they come up with statistics - "Player who wins first set between these two, usually wins the match". Except when he doesn't (rolleyes)
I'm not superstitious, but I believe if you put enough pressure on a player presenting him these irrelevant facts... let just say that he doesn't need such info.

Trouble is, he can't shed enough points between now and RG to lose the number #1 ranking! He's stuck with it!

Maybe if he can persuade the organisers at RG to adopt the Wimbledon seeding system he might be in with a chance as Nadal would then automatically become top seed!

Meaningless stat. I bet if you did the same research regarding wimbledon the results would be very similar.

In the last 40 years of wimbledon I can only remember 2 guys, maybe 3 winning it for the first time while being the #1 seed.
