Nobody in the today's tennis has produced an insane amount of great shots as Federer

Fed used to hit many amazing shots during a match, and when I say amazing, I mean spectacular. Nadal used to be a very defensive player, resulting in a more safe playstyle, often not going for big shots and relying mostly on his spin to get the job done.

I would rank Nadal maybe 4th after Murray (of today's tennis), and overall in history I'd rank Nadal at about 20.

Nadal is a fantastic shot maker, he pulls of some great shots especially when in defensive positions. I would personally rank Federer higher, but it's mostly subjective, Federer has more variety.

Couldn't agree more. Fed's the most talented and also the greatest shotmaker of all time. Great thread.

Not to mention, even when Fed gets lucky with a framejob, he walks it off like "Yep, just like I planned it." and people are like "OMG!" Case in point... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWBWibFfN4c#t=1m56s Well, not too much of a framer, but damn close. (Watch the point play out.)

Agreed, Nadal's defensive winners are unbelievable.

I agree with the OP. Hands down, Federer is the greatest shotmaker in the history of the sport. Prime Federer's shot making ability from no man's land especially is without compare.

Greatest shotmaker to ever live: Federer

What has been witnessed, shall never be forgotten. The video footage will make his legacy immortal

RNadal is the king of passing shots and probably running FHs. To compare it with AMurray's is an insult IMO.
This is not to discredit AMurray in any way, but he us way below RNadal in this department, not even comparable.

I think that is extreme subjective. You can see players like Rafa pulling out winners from nowhere, some sick defense, super curving balls, etc.

those are indeed astounding. really they are.

i am not sure if he has produced the most. and while i could be biased here because i have admittedly focused more on nadal matches in recent times. but i think nadal's highlights are quite stunning too. does he come close to federer in quantity? i think so. but that's my personal opinion.

I don't know about any one else, but when I watch that second of the two videos against Verdasco in the AO the thing that stands out to me is how soft and loopy Nadal's Forehands are.

Nadal was in great form here no doubt, but I think the Nadal of today is WAY more agressive, powerful etc., on the ground strokes and Serve...

Until you go back and watch a match like this it's easy to not notice remember that there is a real difference in how hard Rafa hits today compared with a couple of years ago.

I guess the real start of it was when Rafa ramped up for the US Open on 2010. Beefing up the serve and groundies.

Yes...
Nadal vs verdasco AO SF was the best SF at GS ever.
They produced so many highlight reel.

I agree, which is one of the reasons I prefer 2012 AO with Djokovic>>> 09 with Verdasco. I'm in the minority and that's fine with me, but Rafa was way more defensive in that match with Verdasco than he is these days.

What a ridiculous thread..this is the reason why so many fans of other players hate Federer fans. It's never "Federer hits great shots", it's always "Federer hits the most great shots out of anyone". You can treat him like a tennis angel, like his game is so pretty that it makes his farts smell like flowers and strawberries, whatever you want. But keep those thoughts in your head.

If you seriously think that it's not even close, then you clearly haven't watched a lot of tennis. Federer has his history of insane shots, but so does Nadal. In fact you can make the case that Nadal has just as many. Just because they're not pretty backhand flicks or half-volley drop shots doesn't mean they're not impressive. I'd pay to see Nadal's gets and passes just as much as Federer's cool shots.

Hypocrite much? How about you go and check out the thread "Nadal has a career slam of the greatest matches"

No you can't. Fed will be remembered for his genius shotmaking, Ralph will be remembered for his defense. Deal with it.

Yeah only if you're a close-minded fanboy of Federer. Limiting Rafael's legacy to "defense" is one of the dumbest things you can do. Isn't it a little silly to suggest that a player who has consistently owned the supposed GOAT is only going to be remembered as a defensive player?

You can't just ignore aesthetics just cause your idol has ugly strokes.

Once again, you're showing exactly why people hate Federer fans like you. Nadal's game is not ugly in the slightest. You're treating him like he's Paolo freaking Lorenzi or something. His forehand is an absolute work of art. It's one of the most versatile (if not THE most) shots in tennis history, and I could seriously watch it all day. His footwork is probably the best on tour. Even though sometimes he says weird things, John McEnroe (arguably the GOAT volleyer) did say that Rafa was the purest volleyer out of the big 4. His shots and game is only 'ugly' if you watch it with a hater's mentality.

because flat="clean", topspin = "dirty". that principle can explain everything in life.

Yea well you should thank your lucky stars that Ralph hasn't taken his head off hitting his absolute masterpiece of a FH.

Insufferable with the constant comparisons and trying to elevate one over the over.

If you like Player A, that doesn't mean you have to spit on Player B.

If everyone saw it the way they do, no other player would have any fans, which obviously isn't the case.

My dad's bigger than your dad. Yawn.

It's mainly the Fedal thing and it's reached an all time low lately. There really should just be a Federer vs Nadal sticky thread or something because it's getting out of hand.

OH NO bandwagoner JMac says Nadal is the best volleyer, that must make it true. Actually, not only Fed has better volleys, but also Murray. The only top 4 player (we'll count Fed as a top 4 player for the same of the argument) worse than Nadal at the net is Djokovic. Nadal rarely comes in and if he does, its a sitter. When Nadal is forced to hit a tough volley, he is more than likely to miss it.

And the highlight reels are endless, Fed is like a machine that produces amazing shots. Nobody in the game today (or in history for that matter) has come close to produce that amount of brilliant, jaw-dropping shots that leave you stunned. Heck, nobody even comes close.

This is true. It's so obvious that even the most brainwashed fans won't dispute this.

Maybe Mac was saying only for that tournament Wimb 2010?
