Novak Djokovic news: Nole pleasantly surprised by Nick Kyrgios’ support

Novak Djokovic said he understands the criticism and lack of support he received from many players while addressing the saga at a press conference in Serbia.
He thanked those who supported him in any way.

“I respect my colleagues and I understand that some of them didn’t want to speak up, and some of them criticised me or didn’t like the way I entered Australia,” Novak Djokovic told the Serbian media.

“I just wish that they listened to my side of the story. But their position was not easy, there was so much attention on the whole saga, and they understandably wanted to talk about themselves and the tournament.

“Nick Kyrgios surprised me pleasantly, I thanked him and all of the others who stood up for me, Alize Cornet for instance.
“I received a lot of messages privately from some of the players, but they didn’t want to speak publicly. I understand it, the situation was complicated

Djokovic's side of the story : I rubbed some syringes on my chest and omg I developed a rash. Also I consulted the pyramid Gods and they disapproved. This is obviously a life and death situation that challenges both my health and spiritual balance but the flesh is weak and I care about earthly affairs such as the slam record as well so let me have my cake and eat it too thank you.

Really? What side did we, or the players, not hear? That he lied (via a flunkie) on entering the country? Refusing to be vaccinated like the other players? Refusing to be vaccinated after being infected twice** already? The Adria fiasco? Inspite of knowing he was positive, not giving the L'equip journo and the photographer the chance to opt out of that interview?

What a slime-ball. At least - big surprise - he has the attention-seeking Mortaglu (whatever) and Kyrgios on his side.

**Though many suspect his second positive was a lie of convenience too.

Djokovic living rent free in a bullzillion empty head is a marvelous sight to see.

It is no coincidence that a 'punk' and a liar understand each other so easily.

Don't underestimate the damage Djokovic has done to his own reputation. With these pathetic interviews, it looks like he's trying to start the Nole Rehabilitation Tour for his damaged image. There is real disgust out here for him now, and not just Rafa fans, but even non-tennis fans.

I used to like the guy, and how he plays tennis. Now I feel disgust whenever I see a photo of him.

If you consider trolling him being angry with him, sure gymnast. And instead of refuting points with logic, you go back to the contrived "rent free" point which has nothing to do with the arguments at all. Some smart fellow. In some ways exactly echoing what your idol is like.

I don't think it's the syringes that he's scared of...more like the liquid looking substance that's being injected with it, that he's wary of

They're just afraid Nadal's foot, knee, fingers, pinky toe etc. might start hurting again with no daddy government to move Novak out of the way.
No. You too are not reading the room properly. You seem to think this is more about tennis or Rafa and records, but that is not the main factor at work here, so let me explain it to you...

To many of us it's about issues that have greater significance in our lives than watching and discussing an entertaining game - it's about co-operating with our fellow citizens, public health, economic survival, societal upheaval, misinformation, and obviously avoiding getting sick and possible repercussions from that. You may not believe it, but navigating the pandemic successfully is very important to millions and millions of people whether they follow tennis or not. So, for many, the great disdain you see for Novak is not about who can win the FO, the USO, bla, bla, it's of greater significance than that.

In this context, like it or not, Novak has shown us who he really is - entitled, ignorant, dishonest, and who selfishly cares only about himself and his records. He deservedly will go down in history for his excellence on the court, but now also for some unsavory behavior. And that can't be erased.

I don't understand what "legitimacy" even means in this context.

Sometimes it best not to understand and just let things be.

Though Djokovic = Legitimacy sounds like something his sponsors should pick up on for branding.

I was a member here for 12 years while basically avoiding commenting on Djokovic. Truly great player even if not my favorite but the idea that what caused me to comment on him now has anything to do with his success is so ludicrous that it could only have been imagined by Djokovic fans who are so cavalier about what Novak has been doing that they have to invent fantasies to explain the obvious.

The fact is, Djokovic's fan base now is disproportionately composed of people with a particular view of the world which they see reflected in their preferred player. It's probably the first time men's tennis has had such a strong divide along non-tennis lines and it's obvious in all the tennis forums where Djokovic fans have been disproportionately making antivax arguments for months.

I participate in a non-tennis 'hobby' forum. A few anti-vaxers are there too. And they all sound the same. Sad.

Nick comes through for Novak! 2 of a kind! LOL! :giggle: Both are viewed as society’s outliers, maybe even as outcasts. God I love them supporting each other now in time of pressure!

Djokovic is the "Gwyneth Paltrow of men's tennis" and his views are shaped by his dietary regime and nothing more.

The takeaway is that a lot of players are afraid/hesitant to speak publicly what they think/feel. Not normal.

I agree that players lie in interviews and press conferences to prevent public scorn and anger. Like Djokovic saying in the BBC interview this week that he is not an anti-vaxxer. Or the strange reasons he gave for continuing to inter-act with kids, journalists etc. after testing positive in December.
