Opinions on these Poly/Co-Polys...

I'm wanting to try a few different poly/co-poly strings I've never tried before.

I may be putting them in a LM Radical MP so I'm looking for something that has better than average 'bite', a bit of pop (for poly anyway), and excellent control.

Some of the ones I'm thinking about are:
- Topspin Cyber Blue 1.25/1.20
- Topspin Cyber Flash 1.25/1.20
- MSV Focus Hex 1.18
- Kirschbaum Spiky Shark 1.25
- Signum Pro Poly Plasma HEXtreme 1.25
- Weiss Cannon Turbo Twist 1.24/1.18
- Weiss Cannon Silverstring 1.25/1.20
- Signum Pro Tornado 1.23
- Pacific Poly Force Original 17

I'd love to hear all opinions/comments you can give on the above strings.

Some strings I've tried recently are Luxilon BB ALU Power, Luxilin BB ALU Power Fluoro 17, Signum Pro Poly Plasma 17, Signum Pro Hyperion 17, Tecnifibre Black Code 17, Weiss Cannon Scorpion.

Thanks for any feedback you can give.

i havent actually tried signum pro tornado, but i have strung it up for a customer at work, and it is a stiff string to string up. in terms of string it looks and feels like luxilon alu rough, just black in colour. i have no idea how it plays, but thats just my experience with stringing it :p feels quite stiff to string up. and generally i feel you can gauge how a string will feel when you string it up, so thats my 2 cents if it helps you in any way at all haha

Cyber Blue is a great string. Good on the arm, good power and pop mixed with great, typical poly control. I went through about 5 rackets worth before I wanted something new, which for me is heaps since I haven't played two rackets the same in 12 months.

I've used both Spiky Shark 17 and Turbo Twist 17, but I can't compare them directly b/c the massive difference in tensions ( strung up TT 17 at 57 and SS 17 at 35) as well as in different weather conditions (TT at 30-50 degrees and SS at 75 degrees).

When it was warmer outside, Turbo Twist felt very lively and comfortable for a poly but when the weather was in the 30's, it still felt stiff and powerless - a sensation which I've seen arise with poly's when the weather is cold. However, I found spin production to be rather average for a poly (which means its still damn good compared to most multis), while tension maintenance/playability was quite good (still played decent past 15-20 hours of play).

Spiky Shark puts tremendous amounts of spin on the ball and even strung at 35, it still felt fairly stiff (strings did not start moving til hour 4 or so of play). Aside from that, I'm not sure how much of my impressions can be attributed to low tension and which is an actual characteristic of the string itself. However, my impressions are that it feels fairly comfortable and lively but not overpowering, given that one of the main results of having low tension is a higher trajectory off the string bed which causes me to hit the ball long when my form is off or I'm hitting the ball too late.

I'm using Tornado at the moment after trying Black Code for a few months, and Tornado for me is hands down the better string. Much softer, much better control, spin is about equal, much better tension maintenance and I think, better power.

I'm still not sold on poly's - I just find 'feel' too big a deal for me and I don't get what i want from a poly (or haven't found the string for me yet). I'll probably go back to a syn gut or multi, but if I were to stay with poly's, the Tornado would be at the top of my list.

I'm test playing the Signum Tornado too at 55 lbs. Two hours on it so far and my biggest question mark waiting to be answered is tension maintenance. If it plays through 6-8 hours I'm going to stick with it. The first two hours played quite consistent and I'm already smoothing out the hex/twist edges around my sweet spot. Very comfortable and my reference string is Head RIP Control that I played with for 18 months straight. Similarity between the two strings 90% of the time is a lot closer than I anticipated but a big cut with Signum is more rewarding than RIP Control. I'm breaking RIP Control at the 5 hour mark.

Given your criteria, I would say the light
gauge MSV focus hex would probably be
the best at meeting your demands from that list.

I currently have full beds of Iso-speed pyramid in one stick and Topspin Max Rotation in another. Both at 58lbs. both in Fischer MPro 1 98 SLs. Great spin, great pop, and no arm issues from either.

Might wanna give those a try too. The Max Rotation has alot more spin than the the Spiky Shark.

From your list, I can comment on 3:

MSV Focus Hex 1.18 felt too stiff for me. I was used to PLII 1.15mm and couldn't even play with that( note that I was using the same tension ). Cut it after 20 min of play.

I can tell that TT is a very nice string, with good spin( obviously ), nice tension stability, low string movement and good control/power ratio. It accepts well low tensions.

Silverstring is a whole different story. It doesn't accept low tensions, moves a lot for a co-poly, although it keeps tension well and has decent power.

I'd also advise you to test Scorpion: IMHO, it performed better than both TT and Silverstring, with better control, better touch, power and tension stability. Also it has low string movement.

It is similar to PLII 1.15mm, with a little less comfort and feel. But I trade it for Scorpion's better tension maintenance.

I just tried Pacific Polyforce, and to tell you the truth, I was a bit disapointed. It was soft, did not have much of a crisp feel, decent power, but not much feel. There are better and cheaper polys out there.

I just got through playing with Scorpion (although in a different racquet) and it seemed sort of dead to me. Maybe it was the tension (probably a bit too high for 50 degree weather).

My worry with Turbo Twist is that the 'twist' will wear off and the string will play differently after this happens.

Thanks for all your input.

No problems, you're welcome.

Turbo Twist won't lose the 'twist', that's for sure. It really helps spin, but it's not a big concern for me, since I'm more of a flat hitter.

I'm not sure how Scorpion plays at high tensions, but it plays wonderfully @ low tensions such the ones I'm using. i got plenty of controllable power.

I think Tornado is an excellent string and I thought BC was good too. I'm currently using Tornado in a hybrid in the mid 30s and it rocks(huge amounts of spin and tension maintenance is great)! It's also more expensive at $176/reel so pound for pound Genesis Spin X($99/reel) is a better deal, IMO. I still prefer Tornado 10%-15% more however. It's a twisted poly but the edges don't wear down.

I'm somewhere in the vicinity of 12-15 hours with my current Tornado setup and it feels really nicely settled in. I recall a lot more control issues with Black Code a little earlier than this. So far, I haven't really noticed anything different control-wise with the Tornado.

You might try the new co-poly from Kirschbaum called HELIX which is a softer co-poly with twisted fibers and play test results so far show good spin potential and feel. Kirsch strings are all pre-stretched and the HELIX holds it's tension very well.
