Pre-NCAA Championships

Was reading an article on Gardnar Mulloy the other day and read this:

When he launched the University’s tennis program almost 80 years ago, Mulloy knew he had weather on his side. “While the schools up North couldn’t get out to practice until the snow melted, we were able to practice year-round,” he says. “I knew we could beat them.” And so they did, winning a college championship in 1936.

Does anybody know the history of these championships before the NCAA tournament started in 1946? Been asking around, even the magazine that published the article, but haven't found any info yet. Just curious about how accurate this is and if there are any records for this.

I guess there aren't any records about this out there. Maybe it was an Eastern seaboard schools only thing that was just publicized that way.
