Rackets for Girls?

Trojan 91

Does anyone have any recommendations on purchasing rackets for girls? I'm looking for a racket for a 10 year old who is about 5 ft tall. I was wondering what's a good junior performance racket for her (ie BLX 95?). Could you provide me the specifications of a racket that would be suitable for her? (ie head size (95 vs 100), string pattern, length of racket, tension)?

Thanks for your help.

An average starting point would be over 100, less than 115, moderate to stiff flexing, weight around 10.75 oz, over or under is fine, fairly even balance, grip size around 3/8th..
Any company, the color she likes.

I would get a racquet she can grow into. Look for something 10-11oz weight range and 100-110 headsize mainly. If you are able, demo a few that range so she can tell you what she feels the most comfortable with. If you are just looking to buy something and go, the Head MicroGEL Radical Oversize is a great racquet that fits and is cheap. A list of others to look at that I have seen players use or reccomend are below.

Babolat Pure Drive Lite GT
Babolat Drive Z Lite Cortex
Head YOUTEK Mojo
Head YOUTEK Instinct
Yonex RDiS 300 Midplus
Yonex E-Zone or lite (my girlfriend is 5 foot and uses the previous version called the Yonex RQiS 1 Tour XL 95 Lite)
Prince EXO3 Black Team

Why not this recent offering from Wilson?

If I were into buying new rackets, I'd get it myself (and I'm not a girl).

I agree with everything here expect the 3/8th grip size. Go to the grip guide that TW provides and messure. Then you might get a tad bit bigger if she is just starting. Most beginners tend to have bad form which can lead to arm problems. Too small of a grip can speed can also atribute to this. One thing to remember is that you can always build the grip up using shrink wraps but it is much harder (and sometimes impossible) to get the grip smaller.

I say just get her a pure drive now.
Over half of every girls college team I've seem plays with them, and all but one of our HS team. They're everywhere at tournies.

I guess it might not be the best for her at this age though.

..er.... Since Nadal, Fed, DJ, and Murray use 1/2 down to 3/8 grips, and they are taller than 5' .........er, need I carry on?

Just because everyone uses it doesn't mean its good, just means they are all sheep. The pure drive is an overpowered arm-killer. However, the racquet she should get really depends on how competitive she wants to play.

That's the thing though.
At this age, looks will probably be much more important to how they feel about a racquet than how it plays anyway, because they have no frame of reference at this point, so making the kid happy with how their racquet looks will be a good motivator. Unless she is unlike most girls and doesn't like having something trendy I guess, but in that case I still doubt they'yd be able to tell what racquet would be best for them.
And overpowered arm killer is really being a little too harsh. Plenty of people on here use and like it with no troubles, and it's still decently controllable power. It's one of the most popular racquets for a reason.
And honestly, I think it's nearly impossible to give a junior arm trouble.

Get her something relatively cheap to start. Easy to swing with a large surface. I was thinking Dunlop 800 or Head S5 Comfort Zone.

Go here:
http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/saleracquets.html

And check out some of the offerings. There are some crazy deals on that page, like the Dunlop 500 & 600, Volkl DNX 2, Prince Red, etc. Lots of great rackets at 50% - 60% off original pricing.

Of course, for her it will be all about the colors, not the specs, but both my daughters (10 & 13) use my wife's old V1 ( http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Boris_Becker_V1_Oversize/descpageRCVOLKL-BV1OS.html ) and they have no problem hitting the ball.

Trojan - if she's just starting out, I'd recommend that you show her a few of the "lite" racquets such as the Aero Pro Lite, Pro Drive Lite, or Head Speed Lite and let her choose the one she likes the look of best. At that age, any of the above should be fine, but she'll be more likely to play if she likes the look of the racquet, IMO. Hope this helps!

If that comment was directed to me I was trying to get at that going smaller than 3/8th grip would be better because she is a small female. If the comment was not directed at me than disreguard.

how about these? pretty cheap

i would personally get her the k strike. it seems to fit her needs perfectly and at a great price.

That reminds me that the Wilson K Factor KSurge would also be great

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Looks like I’ll need her to go test out the rackets. Regarding the length of the racket, is 25”-27” appropriate for her height? It seems like those are close to the adult racket sizes already. I’m tempted to purchase an adult racket. Also, Peter Panda, I wasn’t able to open the link in your reply. Was it a Babalot brand that you were recommending?

27" is the standard for adult racquets. It is common for racquets targeting females to have an extra .25" to .5" added on. For her height it any length wouldn't be a problem. Getting a standard or about just allows her to keep the racquet longer. Weight and SW are the biggest things to consider. If they are too high it will considerably hinder her ablity to swing well.

Though it just might be me being an over protective teacher, one thing that concerns me is flex. Many people say a high flex rating can help contribute to injury. A stiff string being the other equipment that is commonly blamed. Poor form is usually the primary reason among recreational players though. I've seen parents post about wanting to not take any chances and get low flex frames for thier children along with a soft multi or gut strings. The Head Radicals MP and OS would be a good option for this route.

The racquet Peter Panda was trying to link was also one of my recommendations. It is the Babalot Drive Z lite cortex. The stiffness rating is high as I warned about above, but its low weight would able her to again, grow into it. You would be able to add weight into the handle slowly as she grows which would eventually bring it to around even balalance. (which most females sticks tend to be) See if this link works.

Hopefully you are able to find some of that useful.
