RIP Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour 2012-2024 ala Grigor Dimitrov

Grigor was spotted wearing/testing Asics in Monte Carlo today. I’m surprised he’s not wearing/testing the On Running Roger Pros since it’s similar to the Zoom Vapor 9 Tour. If this is the case with him switching, it would be a sad day for us tennis shoe nerds. This one is for you @gino! https://x.com/perfecttennisuk/status/1775851147309334611?s=46&t=-u9dgxQObbyYVYJfQCtSLA
Wow! Good spot. The supply of fresh 9.5s finally ran dry for Grigor!

Also very interesting about the hair situation. I know you had identified this earlier because the other day you mentioned he has been wearing a baseball hat as part of his recovery rehab after having hair transplants / therapy for baldness.

Very surprising and interesting information all round really.

@David Le - would you say the Head Sprint Pros and the On Roger Pros are the closest current off the shelf shoes to the 9.5?

Thanks! I’ve heard the Head Sprint Pros were close and the On Roger Pros makes sense cause Fed design them off the Vapor Pros. I would add in the Wilson Rush 3/4 as a similar pair, not sure which one specifically though.

Maybe he can not get any clay vapors but will go back to them on hard court
Apparently he wore 3 different ones during the clay season last year so perhaps not a supply issue. I don’t play on clay as often so not too sure if they break down over time (traction)

Wild man…. Could be the end of the v9 on tour! I hope he sticks with the v9. He’s playing incredible in them right now

Yeah hopefully so. It will be hard to switch over to a new shoe after 12 years wearing the same ones. But that really makes me question about Nishikori. I don’t remember, but did he ever signed with Nike for shoes? I know his is a custom Vapor 9.5 with Vapor 10 upper, Court Ballistec 4.3 toe guard and Vapor 10 outsole.

He's been wearing old ones I assume from ones he collected when the shoes were new/supplied by Nike, they weren't making him new colors etc... you can see in close ups they are worn/aged. This could be anything from trying new shoes to my shoes didn't arrive with my luggage to a new Asics sponsorship, see what happens in MC first, but I mean it would make sense after how well he's been playing that Asics would try to snap him up for sponsorship even if its just for shoes.

Superstitious indeed - I believe he also requests that the "W" stencil on his strings faces in the opposite direction from the logo on the buttcap (or he used to)

But isn't durability an important element of the shoe?
not when you are a pro who gets shoes whenever they want, no, you're generally not wearing them for a long time - you just want the highest performance possible, durability is not really an issue (though perhaps has become one for Grigor, but he swaps between a lot of different pairs to have different colors etc... so he isnt using one pair until they die)

Definitely not when we talk vapors. the vapor have been marketed since 2004 as the fastest shoe from Nike, with that, totally lacking durability in the outsole and upper

If you’re a rec player trying to maximize durability for multiple months the vapor is not for you. If you know much about the history of the shoe it was always a high octane performance option with a short shelf life and incredible performance during said shelf life

Not this shoe. lol
I actually called Tennis Warehouse back when Nike first rolled out the 9.5 to find out what the durability was like on that shoe.

They told me that I wouldn't get more than two to three months of use out of the shoe.

The 9.5 was priced higher than the Courtballistec 4.3 (or whatever shoe Nadal was wearing at the time) so I said "Eff it, I'll just stick with the Courtballistecs." Because they were an awesome shoe.

I think the designs are cool on the 9 and the 9.5 but what's the point if they wear out after just a few months.

Definitely a no go for me. Prior to covid, I would sometimes play five or six days a week. Typically at least several hours a day.

I would have gone through those in probably five or six weeks.

It's a feel thing. I used to play in them and still like the feel more than any other shoe.

I stopped because I realized I was actually doing better score-wise when wearing more substantial shoes.

It's interesting that you say that. I have a racquet string that I love to play with called Babolat Pro Hurricane Excel Hybrid.

This string is half natural gut and half multifilament.

I know that whenever I get my racquet strung with this string, that I'm going to have to replace it within six weeks. Unfortunately, it just shreds really fast.

But the topspin and feel that you get from playing with it is really second to none.

A few years ago, I decided to switch over to Volkl Cyclone as a compromise. Even though I'll still go back to Pro Hurricane from time to time.

So yeah, I can relate to what you went through with the shoes, just more on the equipment (racquet string) side of things.

Yeah it's kinda like that. Although in my case I realized there was something beyond the durability that I was sacrificing by using the Vapor. I think the lack of support fatigued my feet over the course of a match and that affected performance

I think Dimitrov might have head-faked us with the Nike -> ASICS switch :-D

He will probably pull out a million PE clay 9.5s over the next few months to really rub it in. The teal Fed WTF colourway will be next.
Imo he’s not switching over anytime soon unless Asics or someone makes a carbon copy of the ZV9T.

I’m waiting for the any colorway besides the Teal colorway, white or volt.

How awesome would it be if ASICS made a sneaky Vapor knockoff with better outsole durability at the right price point. The demand would be so high they’d never be able to keep them in stock.

The hard part is that there’s little incentive for ASICS to do this so even if they had it for Grisho, it would just be a PE

Yeah that would be crazy. If Under Armour can do it for Murray with his Barricades, I’m sure Asics could too. It makes me wonder why he hasn’t tried On Clouds yet

Pulls out such a sweet colourway, what inside deal does he have.
They're all old/worn so they're just old ones he's collected/kept over the years and he cycles them in and out depending on what he's wearing etc...

2021 Roland Garros colorway. So far he has used that one and 2020 Roland Garros colorway as well (I know RG didn’t happen in the summer like it usually does but he wore his RG outfit in a UTS event)
