Roddick uses paintjob and his racket is 27.5 inches. The racket he uses I think is the babolat pure drive with the swirly PJ

Andy Roddick uses a Pure Drive Team Plus (the mold from 1999-2002) the one that had the swirly PJ with lead tape at the 9 and 3 oclock weighing 12.5oz strung. If you have any questions on his frame or any other equipment in general feel free to ask

12.5 oz ??? really? What is that, 340 grams unstrung and 355 grams strung? Wow, didn't know it was that heavy. What is the balance? I thought he only added about 12 grams of lead to his Pure Drive plus.

What is the consensus on this board about his racket?

When he won the US open in 2003, his racket was 310g unstrung with a 32.5cm balance. was told that by someone who had worked with his rackets.

I have a racket from around the second generation of the PD's... I got it from Cincy. I just need to know how to put up pics.

After reading through some of the other threads, I thought it was around 312 grams with a 33 balance. Don't know how accurate that is either.

Just curious Roddickfan155, how accurate is your info and where did you get it?

I am curious to see what the actual weight is on his racket. Does anyone actual have his racket to weigh? And does anyone have any pictures of his racket just to see how much lead is added on the head?

Thanks Roddickfan155,

Andy's former stringers are definitely a credible source. So basically his racket has an extra 40 grams added before stringing? I guess that would make sense since he was using a Prince longbody before he switched ( I think I read that also on another thread )? So maybe Babolat made his Pure Drive plus to be similar in weight and balance.

Roddickfan155 do you know the weight distribution on his racket? If you don't, do you have a picture to see how much weight is added to the head? It seems like 4 to 8 grams in the head, making that over 30 grams in the handle? Is that way off?

Thx

Another interesting Q would be the actual flex (as in stiffness RA) of ARod's frames... I'm keen to hear any ppl's thoughts ('guesstimates' or better) on Roddicks or indeed other pros stiffness RA.

Most pros rackets are at 350-360g unstrung.. it's just normal weight..

I always wonder when do they start playing with that weight. Is it a gradual process or do they start young with heavy rackets? Been fascinated with that theory of weight in rackets. I teach kids to use heavy rackets young. Most of the pros used rackets, I believe, under 330 grams when younger.

The heaviest rackets made now, don't reach that weight unless lead is added. So when do their coaches start adding weight? At the national level, I don't see any kids hitting with Fed's racket (or heavier) or any racket with lead on it. Most of those kids have 320 down to 295 gram rackets.

Don't mean to sidetrack my own question, but won't to know if Andy's racket is 340 unstrung and what the balance is.

Most of the pros grew up with the Prince pog or mid, Head Prestige mid or Wilson 95. All of these are 330 to 320 grams. Now we are seeing kids grow up with 300 gram rackets. Will the future pros have lighter rackets? Just curious.

Too bad Grant isnt on the boards anymore, he used to be Andys personal stringer. Grant has left tennis all together now.

Here the pics I have:

Hey CGM, do you have any close up of Blake's stick? Few noticed it's been blacked out. Wonder if he's switched back to Dunlop?

Does anybody else think it's kinda shady for the tennis companies to advertise a racket as being used by Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal when they're not actually using it...?

Was curious last night myself as Blake was carrying a Dunlop bag, but his racquet is black with lead at 3 & 9.

i hate all the pj in professional tennis. y cant companies let the pros use racquets with original pj. racquets sell themselves. the only racquet that does good off pro promotion is the wilson blx line, until consumers go out and buy it and find out it sucks. i bet 90% of pros use a pj racquet.

well...the pros are customizing because mostly the racquets are too light for them...they lead the racquets up, customize the balance and grips..get their set-up right. The racquet companies change the pj, materials every 2,3 years...most of the pros want to play basically 10-12 years or longer with the same frame...no changes..because it is a very individual thing.
If you are manufacturing racquets you are damned to change lines according to what the market says..you still have to sell to the general public and not to the pros...so the pros have to use the pj that allows the company to sell the racquet. That is where the customizer comes in...:)
No big deal!

its impossible to tell based on pictures, I have one of Arods sticks from Dcup in birmingham alabama. There's nothing to differentiate between real gt and fake gt.

Roddick DOES use the woofer

Roddick does NOT use the cortex

Roddick does use a 27.5 inch frame

It would be more shady if it weren't standard practice. No reason to single out Roddick and Nadal (or Babolat) when the entire industry is complicit. At least they're using "versions" of the racquet they appear to be. Many others are paintjobbing frames with no connection or similarity to what is under the paint. There isn't a single company in the biz with sponsored players that doesn't do this.
