Roddicks volley

Wow. Thanks for the clip. That looked like a great match, even despite the bias of highlight reels.

I'm not sure the volley technique has improved all that much. But his overall sense of court positioning and control of the net has vastly improved. He's really starting to make netplay less of a bluff and more of a strength in his game.

Other improvements:
--Dictating with the forehand when he gets it
--Keeping rally shots deep
--Retrieving on the defense better

Still problems:
--Doesn't approach down the line enough, or at the right times
--Goes to the slice at the wrong times (even though, overall, he needs to use the shot in his arsenal)

I agree with this. He does try to attack with his forehand and keep his shots deep. He has been more aggressive on his return of serve. There's one thing I don't like about his defense that I'll mention shortly.

Especially agree with this. He needs to start approaching down the line, not cross court. As I mentioned above, he can play defense fairly well, but I feel that he doesn't make the right choices sometimes. For example, when his opponents hit a shot right to him, he slices it, but when he's pulled out wide, he tries to attack with his 2hbh. I don't think this is a good idea considering he doesn't have great speed to get back into the court.

How come he dosen't approach down the line? Every time he crosses it, he gets passed by Gonzo's backhand.

But, overall, much better volleys than what I've seen. Gonzo played well.

I hate that, he always approaches cross court, and he very commonly is passed own the line. I haven't been able to watch him play recently, but this happened a lot during the US Open.

Watch again and notice that some of the approaches were the slice down the line to the forehand. He got passed every time using that play. Cross court approach is definitely more risky but you also have to balance that with attacking the opponents weaker wing, ie the backhand of Gonzo and Fed too.

Great clip. Roddick still leaves the court open sometimes. He goes for the inside-out forehand when going down-the-line would be much smarter, even if it is over the high part of the net.

But the fact that we are continuing to discuss improvements he can make just shows how much potential he has. He's a big talent, despite what some might say.

Sorry, just because a commentator says so doesn't make it true. There is not one volley made by Roddick in that clip which I would not expect to be made by any ATP player. I'm not saying Roddick can't volley but he sure as hell would have been cut up on those approaches by a Federer slice or a dipping Nadal drive. I was impressed by the clutch drop volley by Gonzales though. ;)

Gonzo hits pretty damn hard, I doubt Federer could do THAT much more. Besides, Roddick was passed enough in that match, you can't pass 'em everytime. This thread was created to show Roddick's improvment. His volley's and backhand were horrendous before, defiantly not top 10 ATP level.

You are right about Fed and Gonzo. I've made the same argument elsewhere (to Rabbit, I think), that with a few players it does make sense to approach crosscourt a little more often. Andy's right to avoid Gonzo's forehand. But I think Gonzo ran around at least one of those approaches to his backhand and creamed a pass. Maybe I'm misremembering he clip now . . .

Anyway, my main point was that Andy all too often goes cross-court when coming in, making it way too easy to pass him.

But yeah, he did great against Gasquet, didn't he? He's much improved at net lately.

If you did, point taken. HOwever, it was an easy point to make as I could not agree more with your assessment of Roddick's transition game. I think that's what drives me craziest about Roddick.

Yeah it's still ugly but it working better now. I personally think Roddick's volleys from his match with Grosjean in Madrid were more impressive.

Great clip... I hope grosjean can keep that play up.... My 2 pics from Roddicks last couple of weeks:
1. His improvment and use of serve and volley... He uses it sparingly and effectively... All over he looks like he thinks he's gonna put more volleys away and is not afraid 2 b there, tactics still a little flawed...

2. Increasing stability on the backhand... Improving his rallies from that back of the court and also his defence... On another note forehand is lookin far stronger...

I watched the Roddick-Grosjean match yesterday. Fantastic touch and drop volleys by Roddick. But whatever he does, there will be guys posting here that his volleys are at a 4.0 level. Nothing he can do about it.

Did anyone see Pete Sampras give Roddick a volley lesson in the exhibition match?

Pete made winning points off Roddick look effortless. I was also totally impressed how effective his half-volleys were from the service line area.

Okay, dude. Comparing Roddick's volleys to one the greatest volliers in the history of sport is pointless and unfair. Honestly, Sampras makes Federer look like an amateur if we're strictly talking about volleying ability.

In fact, you could say Sampras makes Federer look like Roddick when it comes to volleys :) Now thats harsh!

Were Roddicks volleys ever too bad? Was watching the Wimbledon Final 2004 sometime back and in the first set, Roddick's down 0-40, and pulls out three points serve and volleying. And not just knocking off easy balls, but half-volleys off low-returns and showing quick reflexes, and even good touch. Fluke? Perhaps. But he certainly was never one of the worst volleyers on tour like people claim he was.
In that match he was also returning really well, hitting clean winners off Federer's serve with his forehand AND backhand. In fact, he hit his backhand well throughout that match. I guess he was just in the zone. When else has he played THAT good?

Wimbledon 2004 Final was definately not his best match......actually ide rank it as mediocre at best. Fed read just about every approach shot flawlessly, the only points Roddick made at net were off federers errors on the passing, and a couple decent volleys. He was passed by rogers backhand about 3/4's of the time he moved to net.

Are you sure your not talking about the final played the following year? Roddick in the 2004 Final did not seem 'mediocre' to me. Probably not his best, but IMO close to it.

Actually 2005 now that i recall. I have the clip downloaded on my computer, my apologies. His Wimbly 2005 match was a complete onslaught, 2004 he did do good :)

Not to hijack this thread, but are a lot of people serving n volleying in Madrid? I saw clips of Roddick and Federer's matches...seemed like a relatively higher percentage of serving n volleying...wonder how Nadal would cope with this. Would he chip n' charge?? :p

I saw Murray play Lubjicic, and they were both volleying quite a bit. Not serve and volleying really, but coming in a lot more than they would on a normal outdoor hardcourt. The ball keeps low on the surface, hard to pass well. I think Nadal will still do ok, he won this event last year.

Overall improvement from Roddick. Hits through the ball rather than just spining it in like the last 2 years.

I think he hasn't really improved as far as his talents go but he's gone back to form. To me he moves better around the court and seems to connect on more openings made by his serve and forehand rather than waiting his opponent out, and that is the biggest improvement.
