Roger Federer has never retired in his career

Yes, Djoker's movement was severely restricted. No way he could have finished the set.

The reality is his usual intensity was not there yesterday.
It was sad to see him leave that way from the stadium.

TBH, after some news regarding his shoulder injury after 2R (he said post-match that he wasn't sure he'd be able to finish the match during set1 or set2), I thought Djokr might withdraw before playing his last match against Kudla in 3R. I feel he's risking quite a lot trying to chase the slam record, to the point of risking further injury which would make it even harder to chase the record. In that sense, today's 4R retirement isn't too surprising since he really should've considered retiring before his 3R.
I'm sure Kudla is thinking, "why didn't he retire against me?" The 4th round money and points would make a difference to him.

He has now retired in all four majors, and I think this brings up his career match retirements to 13 (someone can correct me if I'm wrong).

A bakers dozen of retirements for Novak. Maybe he's been hanging out with Janko Tipsarevic a little too much. :-D

To be fair, Federer can play injured. He has more variation on serve, doesn't need two hands to hit a backhand, can shorten points by coming to the net, etc..

Djokovic is just a grinder. If he can't do that (or it's simply not working against a superior opponent), he may as well retire.

It can only be a retirement if you actually play a point in the match. Pulling out before the match starts is a walkover, to be precise as you so eloquently put it.
Formally you're absolutely right, but it's just a matter of language semantics.
There's no real difference between walkover and early retirement.

Federer's record is to be commended but he's slightly lucky he's never had anything to take him out of a match whether he liked it or not (like Becker's wrist snap at Wimbledon).

I wonder whether he might have retired against Raonic had he not already had 2 sets on the board and thought he might be able to sneak over the line quickly with a bit of luck.

So that is your only rebuttal to Djokovic quitting again? FYI I have seen Federer win multiple slams with 40-15. I'm pretty sure it makes me happy.
Still doesn't excuse the fact that your idol is a quitter. This is the 6th mid match retirement in majors for Djokovic. I don't obsess over one player. I actually prefer one of the next gen to win this slam.

YECs 2014, Federer W/Os couple of hours before the final. Goes on to win Davis Cup the week after

ROFLMAO. But yeah sure everything Federer does is completely legit and no reason to doubt, while others are faking when no logical explanation or history points to it.

Didn’t Fed retire vs Blake in Paris 2008? I think that’s his only one.

Of course it was. Federer couldn't switch into gear and got smashed in his first match of the DC final 9 days after he gave the W/O. I am sure that it was just accidental consequence from feeling good and training full time while taking a break.

Fed did the right thing at WTF14 and gave the w/o. If Djoko was that injured he should have done the same.

But, I don't think Djoko was injured at all. Djoko knows that too and hence played. What happened later is Djoko knew he can't keep up to go for the win. There is only a certain mileage the body can keep up with at a certain age.

But as Raul said, he could and should have finished the set, as Nadal did in the 2014 AO final against the same opponent.

Yes, as we can see here in the third set, Djoker's movement was severely restricted. No way he could have finished the set.
