Roger Federer to miss French Open after having knee surgery

I think he wants 1 last Wimbledon, and it is what he is still playing for. If it will happen or not is another matter. It could but I really think last year was his best chance. It probably won't, but I think he tries for it another 2 times or so, then thats it.

I think he will get that last Wimbledon title. If Fed believes in it so much, he will get there. Either this year or next year.

Who said he believes in it that much. I personally don't think he does. I think last year sapped a lot of the belief. He believes it is enough to keep trying, but I don't think he is super confident in it either.

Left knee surgery made BH stronger (however briefly).....I am hoping this right knee surgery will get his FH straight and win Wimbledon 2020 beating Novak!!!.....

Everyone rants about 40-15. But my best memories of that match was feds bh and of course the back and forth sets. I never was huge on his bh. He was really in control of it in that match. Pinpointing it.

Should have just gotten a cortisone shot. Continuous surgeries on a torn meniscus will only reduce the cartilage more and more until it's bone on bone. The pain is excruciating and doing extreme cuts as in tennis is beyond unbearable. I predict this is the beginning of the end [emoji17]. Hope I'm wrong.

It's a different knee from last time.

Yeah he should have WD from that semi final. I admire him for not, but it was never a prudent or smart choice. He had no chance of winning, and the only possability was making an already existing injury on a worn body worse.

and if he had withdrawn we would have endless threads on his fear of Djokovic being the reason. These top players fear no one. It was clear to me that his physical condition was not up to snuff for some time. Perhaps the exhibitions with Sascha didn’t help but he was committed to them. He has always played a tourney, even if it wasn’t a serious one, in the run up to AO but not this year which I saw as a red flag. I’m glad he has made the decision to get the knee fixed and hope his rehab goes well. If nothing else, going out on court on his own terms is how his career should end. He knows his records falling is just a matter of time now and anything more for him at this point is gravy. His knee will decide if he should play Shanghai. Perhaps he should finish up this year at Basel as he likely won’t qualify for WTF and doesn’t have to play Bercy, and he can either retire there if the rehab didn’t go well, or hang on in for 2021 and do one farewell year on the tour. I will be very sad when he retires, but no matter how good a player is, the end comes for all. I’ve been a tennis lover since 1969 and have seen many come and go. There are lots of younger players to get excited about, although they are all somewhat inconsistent right now, which is disappointing. Hopefully we will have a new Grand Slam winner soon to keep people interested.

I wonder if his knee started bothering him some time soon after W19. I noticed a sudden drop in his rallying level.

He seemed super comfortable playing (and winning) long points at both RG19 and W19.

Could be unrelated of course.

Question is, was this the last nail in the coffin? Will he comeback after surgey? And in which form?
Is it over?

i am hopeful and yet realistic. I don’t think there is another slam but maybe he can keep going till 2021. I have a feeling he will retire at Basel either this year or next.

maybe so, or the drop was related to the heartbreaking loss.

He can believe in it like Leonidas, the fact remains it's totally out of his hands.

Medicine holds his future.

It can end any second on the court.

The last time he took some significant time off he came back and won the Australian Open right away. Remember that?

He did it 11 month after surgery, after which he only managed 13 wins in the span of 4 months before retiring to rest his operated knee.

Which would bring us to january 2021, just in time for the AO.

He would be 39,5 years old by then.

In 2017, he beat a comebacking Nadal, while Novak was facing injuries.

For the time being, Novak is apparently back to a good form.

I kept telling you people this was his last year barring some token appearances in 21.

Would be crazy if he went deep at USO. Connors, Pete, Agassi last stand type deal.

This makes missing Indian Wells 2020 alittle not easier.

Happy I finally went last year even if both Fed matches were routine.

This turns Nadal into a heavy favorite for RG20, and would result in Fed’s last career match in RG being against Nadal.
In would be so appropriate Nadal to end Federer's clay carieer... Hope Novak to end it in Wimbledon final...

I haven’t been back since I retired as an umpire. This was always one of my favorite events. Really want to go as a fan, just couldn’t swing it this year.

On a side note I went to an ITF Wheelchair event yesterday in Houston. If you ever get the opportunity to attend on, go!
