The point made in this site touches upon the difference between Eastern world and the Western world's views on how muscle 'strength' is achieved. Western world's approach is to tear the muscle down with resistance and/or repetitive movements. In contrast, the eastern world's approach gravitates toward lengthening of the muscle for a prolonged period of time--think Yoga.

Both approaches will achieve muscle strength. The western approach is better at adding volume to the muscle fibers, and in my own opinion, takes less time to reach the desired results. The eastern approach is a slower process of establishing strength but it also ensures flexibility.
