Rome should have been pushed 3 days so that Thiem to play.

PCB played the Semi Final in NYC on Friday and is already playing Rome 4 days later.

Thiem played NYC Final on Sunday but can't play Rome.

Rome should have been pushed 3 days and NYC should have held the SF on Thursday and Final on Saturday, just like the women.

It's not a question of a player being above the sport. It's more a question of improvising a calendar. Successful players miss out on a break ... or they over-play.

No player is above the sport

The ATP officials are putting the USO Finalists at a great disadvantage. They cannot play a clay warm up.

There was one month to plan for this. Rome was already preponed by one week. Common sense dictates that Rome be adjusted so that ALL USO players had an opportunity to play.

Rome is effectively punishing the two NYC finalists.

This never would have happened with a proper players union.

Playing three four big tournaments in a row without a rest is ridiculous.

Luckily, Thiem lost in R1 in "Cincy", so he had enough in the tank to finish the job at USO (and we saw how close he was to losing it because of that).

Same applies for Rome just before RG.

Djokovic's union will solve such problem but the schedule was set and nothing can be done this year

Please. Thiem loves to play every tournament. Fatigue had absolutely nothing to do with his uneven Finals performance, coming off a relatively easy straight set SF win over Medvede .

Thiem was well rested for the Final. That subpar performance was all mental.

I think RG should cater to Thiem to make up for Rome by putting him on Djokovic's side of the draw so that he doesn't have to face Nadal any earlier than in the final

The fate of the "contender" at RG will be decided by the draw before the actual pivotal encounters happen.

Look for who will get several in form/dangerous guys before meeting someone form the big 3. That will tell who is considered the one who needs to "earn his stripes". Last year it was Thiem with his ridiculous draw. Then it was seen that Nadal-Djokovic final was still the most desirable, so they tried to soften Timmy before his match with Djokovic, to no avail. If they want Djokovic in the final Timmy is going in Nadal's half, so I guess I tend to think that that is what will happen.

I was referring to the cramps, and they are rarely mental.

He may love to play a lot, but many a times that has been his undoing.

Thiemster is entitled to a clay warm up just like every other player.
He'll get his warm up in the first week of Paris. Many top players have skipped warm ups and gone straight to a Slam. He's already in top physical condition and battle tested.

Hmmm.. you're not him and didn't talk with him (did you?) and what makes you be so sure?

The smart players use the shutdown as an opportunity to improve fitness. More than capable of playing four tournaments in a row...
Two days to rest after the NYC Semi Final win.
Thiem was pain free after the Semi Final straight set win over Medvedev:

"I slid to the drop shot, and then my heel started to hurt because probably a wrong step or something,” Thiem said to John McEnroe after the match.
“It was really hurting, but I changed shoes, a different insole, and then it got better again. So I’m pain-free now"

With no rest between them and two being Majors?

Pray tell, when was the last time that that happened?

Considering the crazy year we had, they don't have a lot of options, fall is coming and they need to have a rest between Masters and Grand Slam. There was no fair way to schedule these tournaments.

I was addressing the claim that it is OK to play 4 tournaments in a row form a physical perspective, not what you here wrote.

Players have to choose what tournaments it is best for them to play, so they do not get worn out physically. Despite what Thiem says, I do think he was injured at the end of his semi and finals match, so it seems to me a wise decision to skip Rome. I think it would be very difficult for any player to play four tournaments in a row.

Yes, I too think that it was extremely beneficial to him that he was eliminated early in Cincy, considering his physical game.

Same for his decision to not play Rome in the light of the incoming RG.

True, winning a slam was the most important thing in his tennis life. He is already 27 and had he lost that USO final, I doubt he would have had a chance to win this year's FO or any other slam, for that matter.

The real injustice to Thiem was putting US Open and Kitzbuhel in the same week.

If Thiem had been set on Rome, win USO or not, he could have got an early morning Monday flight and been on court on Tuesday.

They wouldn’t push it for any player on tour, not even Federer.

Madrid was canceled on August 4.
Rafa was planning on playing Madrid and skipping Rome as he typically does not play close to the start of RG.

It is quite suspicious that Rome was then moved one week earlier to accommodate Rafa.

Entitled???

Every player in the USO draw should have the equal opportunity to play Rome.
We should not have a situation where the USO Finalists are prevented from playing Rome. PCB got knocked out of SF on Thursday but still had time to play Rome on Tuesday.

Thiem and Zverev played Finals on Sunday and realistically could not play Rome on Tuesday.

Shows that without Rafa and Federer the tournament wouldn’t be making enough money.

I was just surprised you used the word "entitled". I thought you skewed relatively conservative, and most conservative minded people, at least that I know, aren't fans of that word.

Yes, every player at the USO, including Finalists, should have the opportunity to play Rome and not be put at a disadvantage by being denied a clay warm up leading up to RG. All this during a pandemic shutdown with very few playing opportunities available.

The ATP scheduling has failed the players here.

Our favorite Joker's proposed union will likely address these type of injustices where tournament profits are put ahead of player's interests.

Joker was very clear that the scheduling should allow returning NYC players to play Rome. That was one of the conditions that had to be met before players agreed to play USO.

Earlier this month Djokovic in an interview with Zurnal, said that he might play in the US Open. But he wants to play in Madrid and Rome as well. Currently, there is a compulsory 14-day quarantine for the players coming from the US to Europe. So with that rule, it makes it impossible for Djokovic to play in Madrid and Rome.

Maybe if you could pay these tournaments then? They aren’t running by themselves and they need viewers. You cannot decide which tournaments to be played when. It’s all about money and many tournaments now about to go bankrupt. Need the big names.

You live in a fantasy world, not in the real one. 90% of your posts are far out there full of internet warrior speculations and conspiracies.

If Thiem wanted to play Rome - ho could've played Rome ... His last match (US Open final was on Sunday ... go eat dinner, have a glass or two of fine champagne, sit on a private jet (with a glass of champagne in your hands) and head over to Europe ... on Wednesday, 72 hours after winning US Open he can play Rome ...

What is so complicated about this ?

Rome was originally scheduled to begin next week. Then Madrid was canceled and Rome decided to start earlier.

Nobody has explained why Rome changed its schedule. Why is Rome suddenly so inflexible that they cannot start three days later to accommodate the USO Finalists? Rafa would still come. Along with Thiem and Zverev. There is a global pandemic and limited tournaments being played, so Rome organizers needs to cooperate and be flexible
on this matter.

We all know that if Rafa had come to NYC and won the USO, and wanted to play Rome, the Rome organizers would have adjusted their schedule accordingly.

Didn’t you hear what Rome director said? They hardly make any money on this, they go in minus this year.
We should be thankful we can even watch tennis this year. I’m sure they had a good reason doing what they did so they would be able to have the tournament the best way.

We should be glad that in such times US Open, French Open and Rome all are taking place instead of making such stupid and laughable accusations.
Players regularly move from one grand slam , French Open to another, Wimbledon without playing any intermediate tournaments.
Doesn't affect them at all.
Thiem needs rest and rejuvenate in these two weeks instead of playing Rome

It appears people here don't realize how odd it is that a Grand Slam is followed by a M1000 event. Across the world, on different surface, to boot.
It could well be Thiem did not sleep a wink the 24h following his win. All the interviews, photo shoots etc.

I would think it is standard to take a week off once you've won a GS, no?
