Rome Flashback : The day Novak Djokovic beat Peak Nadal on clay

Djokovic's best run in a clay tournament imo. Destroyed Soderling in the QF, survived a brutal match in the SF and then routined Nadal in the final. Never did he play with so much confidence and on such high level on a dirt, the depth of his shots, the return, his movement...everything was there.
Though it's easier to produce and maintain that level in BO3, it's still an amazing run and his best performance on the surface.
Watching this, I definitely don't feel sorry for today's younger guys. They were incredibly fortunate to dodge the Big 3 when they were actually at their best. I feel sorry for the guys of back then LOL.

If a "veteran" Stan could step up and win several big tournaments by defeating Big 3, then these youngsters have no excuses at all. They are simply not good enough.

Nadal was peak in 2011?
He was peak in 2008-2010. 2011 he was dropping off. Which coincided with Djokovic's peak. Remember that when Djokovic started peaking in 2011, Nadal had been No.1 and had been winning slams for six seasons beating Federer in finals.

Djokovic 2011 was just what the game needed. It was incredible what he did that season.

His most impressive Bo3 tournament ever. You had to see it to believe it. Feel sorry for Novak fans who didn't get to witness it firsthand.

Peak Djokovic in 2013 got owned at Slams by peak Nadal in 2013.

It doesn't matter, as 2013 proves that one single point can make a world of difference. If Djokovic wins RG SF, 2013 Nadal is probably slamless. In the eyes of his fans, that would make him old and declined, not peak.

Poor Djokovic was destined to inflate his slam count in post 2010 weak era lol.

He beat him in 2008 on clay? I didn't know that.
Maybe not, but he gave Nadal a tough fight in Hambourg and was the one who took the most games from him at Roland Garros 2008 (12 out of the 41 lost by the Spaniard). He even had a set point at 6-5 in the third set.

Djokovic has always been a nightmarish match-up for Nadal even on clay.

12 games, bravo.

Also congrats to Bellucci who took 9, we cannot not mention that here.

How many games Federer has took from Nadal in the Final ?
Even Soderling took less games in the FO 2010 Final than Djokovic against Peak 2008 Claydal

I wondered how much energy Djokovic would have left for the final, after his gruelling SF against Murray and very late finish the day before. He answered that.

Djokovic's form and winning streak were so strong at the time, that he even destroyed the 'streak killer' Soderling in his QF on Friday the 13th ! Beating Wawrinka, Soderling, Murray and Nadal in succession to win a title on clay / in general was definitely an impressive achievement.

That was super impressive stuff. Didn't know he had Sod and Wawrinka before Murray.

I don't know, I honestly don't count Federer's games won in straight sets losses.

And Soderling is then some kind of clay superpower that we should use as a measure? Or more precisely his games won on clay against Nadal.

How do you know you exist?

LOL I'm serious. Decent tennis fans will know that during a peak year one player still has mediocre match/matches and during a mediocre year he still can have peak match/matches.

Fred fans told me that Pete played a great match vs Fred at Wimbledon to convince me that peak Fred would beat peak Pete there, though that's the worst year in Pete's career and in the previous round it took him 5 sets to beat some random guy which I can not remember his name )))

Meanwhile, my eyetest tells me that Fred in the semi of Wimby 15 was not worse than his peak years.

So, your criteria to define a peak form match???

:):):):)

In that case it just boils down to the slam count doesn't it? All else is subjective and meaningless.

What Djokovic did to Nadal in 2011 and what Federer did to Nadal in 2017 were completely unexpected and an amazing thing to watch.

Miami 2011 was a better match. I don't feel Nadal played as well as he could after that. Djokovic hitting his peak and knowing the mental battle was won after Miami really opened things up for him in the clay masters against Rafa that year.
IW 2011 was the key Rafa was owning Djokovic then his serve collapsed and he allowed Djokovic to win which of course gave Djokovic confidence for Miami.
2011 IW was a bad loss for Nadal as had he won that match while i think he may have gone out earlier in Miami i dont think he loses the clay court masters or USO final. W i think he had a problematic ankle so that was likely a loss anyway.

That was my fav ever celebration. Wagged that finger right at Djokovic and his parents and team. Absolutely brilliant and legacy wise in terms of the Federer v Djokovic rivalry pivotal as really hard to argue Djokovic is better than Federer when at his very best peak level on a 40 match winning run aged 23/24 he lost to past prime 30 year old Federer on his worse surface. Absolutely massive match that.
