So before Bridgette Wilson came along, i know sampras had a girlfriend (i forgot her name, but she can be found in this clip at 6:00 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fLkVJSBplE)

anyway, do you think it's weird how the guy (i think it was his coach paul anacone) and his gf at the time were hugging like that? or is it just me?

That girl was Delana Mulcahy, a law student at the time. When Pete and her split, she filed suit against him, claiming she was owed money, for 'supporting' him on tour. They settled out of court. That was a classic tennis match, I mean, the one with Corretja---when Pete hit a second serve ace on match point against him, Corretja later said, "I knew it was almost over."

If you want to watch highlights of the match, go ahead, but if you want to see some stupid hug, don't waste your time. He was hugging her in congratulatory form. Are you one of the people that want to ban Sesame Street because they depict Oscar, Cookie monster and Grover as scary monsters and Burt and Ernie as gay.

A law student was supporting him? Who was supporting her? And if she sued him, I guess she saw some assets to go after. Which brings us back to why he would have needed her support. Interesting world.

Kimberly Williams was definitely the cutest.

Did the law student actually get any money out of Sampras? That's f'ing ridiculous and pathetic.

Well if they settled, she got money. How much is usually never disclosed.

I remember Sampras parents were totally against the relationship because she suddenly showed up after he won his 1st US Open at 19. She was much older than him. I seem to remember she was in the was in her late 20's at the time. His parents smelled gold digger from a mile away. Sampras is very lucky that she didn't get pregnant or didn't get into a situation where she could claim common law marriage or he would have lost a heck of a lot more money.

"That was a classic tennis match, I mean, the one with Corretja---"

If I told you how many matches I've seen at the US Open you wouldn't believe me. :) Anyway, the Sampras-Coretja was certainly one of the best ever.

Sampras threw up during the last set and I still can't believe he finished the match let alone won it. It was very, very intense.

I've got a little trivia question for you.

Though the court looks full on that video, it wasn't at all. That match took place on the second Wednesday starting in the afternoon and it was not expected to be much of a match. By the time it was in the 5th there was a bigger crowd stuck outside the stadium then was in it.

The night match was by far the most anticipated match that Wednesday.

Who was playing in his/her last US Open that everyone had come out to see at night and were stuck outside waiting for while the Sampras-Coretja classic was going on?

I believe that would have been the one and only Stefan Edberg.

I'm not sure I know many women who advocate the use of leadtape consistently since most racquets these days are so light.

After seeing what was mentioned in this thread, you think the bad thing about Mulcahy was her looks, which are probably still better than those of your future girlfriend, muchless when Sampras was actually with her ?? Thanks for doing your part in saving the real women for the rest of us.

Hey I'm sure whatever a hottie in her late 20's performed for an awkward 19 year old Petey was worth the money. I'm sure she was his first.

Man those old matches brings back memories when I was a kid. SHEESH! You see how FAR they step in on the serves? WHOLLY GEEZ... but man those kick serves back in the day are sick...

As far as I recall, she was 8-9 year older than Pete.
I could be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure she is over 40 now.

She was (and remains) born seven years before Sampras and she graduated with a bachelor's degree the year that Sampras turned 21. She is also a gold-digger with a fake tan.

I called her phone but machine was answering. I left an email for Delaina. I hope she does not mind.

It is very clear that most men in the U.S. have girl friends prior to their marriages, and extra-marital relationships with other women, but why then we Muslims are criticized for having more than one wife which has a legal cover? My head spins! Is it ok to have one wife and several other sex affairs at the same time, or make it legal, as we do, and have more than one wife? Which one is better?

It is not ok to have an affair while you are married. Where did you get the idea that it was? The vast majority of Americans would say that it is wrong. Having a girlfriend before you get married is completely different from having an affair once you are married.

Come on! I have very close association with Americans for decades. I know for sure that large number of Americans (men and women) have extra-marital affairs that includes sex! Even if it is one in one million, there has to be a solution! That was my point. If you don't get it; well, you don't get it!

The solution to extramarital affairs is to have more wives? People who are prone to have these affairs will certainly continue doing so even if they have 2 or 3 wives. Are you saying that Muslim men never have affairs?

I don't deny that there are a number of people who have sex outside of marriage in the US, but the vast majority of Americans would still would consider it wrong even the ones that are doing it. Just like people who commit crimes, lie, cheat or steal know what they are doing is wrong or is at least considered by society as wrong but they do it anyways.

There are solutions in America to extramarital affairs: get divorced (which usually happens when the spouse finds out), don't get married or have an "open" marriage.

Also by your logic why can't women have more than 1 husband?

Kimberly Williams did a very smart thing. She dumped Pete for Brad Paisley (the superstar music singer). Brad is probably more loaded than Pete, just sit back and collecting checks from music royalties and Nationwide insurance, along with Peyton Manning.

So according to this stereotypical ugly American and tireless peddler of the bootstrapping mythology:
  • The US offers more economic opportunities than any other country, when it barely makes the top 20 per the right-wing Heritage Foundation's "index of economic freedom" and the public Congressional Research Service has concluded that real wages for American lower-wage workers have barely budged or even fallen since 1979.
  • It's fine to call a less-than-upscale/White neighborhood a ghetto. (FYI that was in reference to Bailey's Crossroads in Northern Virginia, with a minority-majority population and a median household income of $51,650.)
  • We should encourage our children to hobnob with big shots preferably on fancy golf courses instead of instilling the values of hard work (funny how that bootstrapping suddenly takes a back seat, eh?), honesty and community. And never mind that the majority of families have neither the proximity nor the wherewithal to afford regular golf outings in the first place.
  • I should vote with my purse (read: Republican) because, you know, that's how you climb up the social ladder. (Yes, this guy once directly told me, a complete stranger, how I should vote. The sheer effrontery was insulting enough but worse still was this revealing presumption on his part that everyone is as venal as him and his upper-middle-class circle.)
And now he's saying it's "very smart" for a woman to "dump" a partner for a "more loaded" one so she can "just sit back" and collect easy money. In other words, the old caricature of women as gold diggers is not only acceptable but praiseworthy.

If you needed to see a particularly pertinent example reinforcing my contention that rampant philistinism lies behind our society's graves ills, look no further.

You couldn't be more wrong. Horrible assumption. She did not marry Brad for the money. Furthermore, she already had a successful career at that point.

You can learn a little bit more about her from her book. She writes about her relationship with Brad, as well.

*full disclosure. I am connected to her thru ALZ Assoc.

Sampras and Kimberly Williams broke up some time in 1998 didn't they? I can't remember when exactly the break-up happened that year, but that can't have been good for his mood that year.

Sampras was of course far more tense, agitated and angry than normal in 1998, due to his desperate and all-consuming pursuit of the 6th consecutive year end no. 1 finish. At the start of the year he refused to shake the hand of the umpire after his defeat to Kucera at the Australian Open. During the summer he was really angry after his defeat against Rafter in the Cincy final (when the umpire over-ruled a Rafter fault on match point), throwing an expletive-laden tantrum (a huge one for his standards) and apparently smashing things in the locker room afterwards. Then the next week he committed one of the most blatant tanks of his career against Paes at New Haven, pocketing his large appearance fee and gladly getting out of there - he dared the umpire to default him at one point and was booed by the fans who knew he was tanking. And during his torturous European indoor campaign, in his 6th tournament appearance in as many weeks he was in a terrible mood during his defeat against Stoltenberg (a player that I really enjoyed watching) in Stockholm, including tossing his racket (he didn't exactly do that often) and receiving a warning from the umpire.

Pete was often compared to Gonzales in terms of playing style, but this sounds like something more than just on-court similarities. Did Pete ever get coached by Gonzales? I know that Gonzales admired Sampras' game.

By the way, this thread has been bumped up after an absence of 14 years....anything longer than TWO years is rewarded by a mod message, I believe. Or so I have been told by some very astute mods.
Perhaps if we don't talk about it, no one will notice.
