Sectionals, team only moves their own score on scoreboard?

At Sectionals in Little Rock this weekend, one team would instantly change their score on the scoreboard if they won a game. They would never change the opponents' score, even at the change over. Of course, this led to some confusion at the changeover when our team automatically thought there should be two games added to the existing score.

Is this normal anywhere?

You played the points / games "in good faith" with the score as posted, so the score cannot be changed.

They were nice. I usually subtract a game from my opponents side.

Of course it's normal.

A 3.0 team at semi western sectionals did this. Felt super odd

Is keeping track on the scoreboard a USTA thing? When I first started playing in non USTA matches I would keep track on scoreboard religiously. At some point I stopped, I have even totally forgotten about it, occasionally I see lower level players use it. Similar to higher level players supposedly not even calling out score, is the use of the scoreboard a lower level player thing?

Aside from that, when I was in matches where scoreboard was used, never did I not increase both players score and neither did my opponent. What would be rationale for doing this? Seems very childish to me to not increase both.

it's useful for letting teammates/coaches see what the score is...
but yeah, as you get better, you just track the score in your head....
played tb's against a buddy, we didn't say the score once, didn't have any confusion on score... not saying that happens all the time, but between me&him, that's usually the case.
in my daughter's varsity match, my daughter wasn't changing her opponent's score, because she felt it was her opponent's "side", and didn't want to touch what wasn't hers.. i pointed it out, and her response was "oh, i didn't know i could do that"... lol

Very unusual. What level and gender was this if I may ask?
Was this some weird form of gamesmanship, or just very inexperienced players?

Typically the scoreboard is there so that spectators can see the score, more so than for the players themselves.
Even in the rare case where it's being done to help the players themselves keep track of the score, it's kinda pointless if it's not showing the correct score.

There’s a reason that there’s a rule requiring the server to call out the score before every point.

It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, not calling the score is only going to increase the likelihood of score disputes.

Totally agree, I always call out the score. I was just making mention of people on here saying some higher level players never call out the score.

Lol, unless you're a kid who just doesn't know like nyta2 mentioned, it's usually just someone who's difficult to deal with that does that. If you want to use the scoreboard, you should just change both scores. If you don't want to, then don't. But only changing yours? That's the kind of person that will argue everything, have mandatory practices for leagues when most people are playing just for fun/exercises, etc, just difficult people to deal with in general.

I have been playing a lot of practice matches yesterday and find I am forgetting the game score and set score more and more..... I always hated the scorecards and thought it was ostentatious, maybe not so much now.

To OP, easy solution is to go and change only your score position if the opposing team inly changes their position. Why fret? It’s a waste of energy and focus.
