Self rate

Friend asked me and I don't know the answer. If she self rates as a 4.0 does that start her dynamic rating at the top of range or bottom? Is it easier to get bumped down as a self rate end of yr or a " c" rating? Please shed light. Thanks

A self rate has no dynamic rating to start. They begin to have their rating calculated with their first match where they are the only self-rated player. The level you self-rate at only dictates the minimum level you can play at but nothing specific about the rating you'll end up with. The dynamic rating is based solely on the result of the matches played and the ratings of the opponents (and partner in doubles) at the time of the match.

As far as being bumped down, if you play enough matches, I don't think being an S or C to start the year makes it any easier. If you only play a few matches, an S may be bumped down a little easier.
