Back to tennis...our league starts up in a month. Was hoping to be able to practice my serve this summer but alas my slow healing wrist/thumb has prevented that. However I have been serving each Sunday at our practice/drop in. In fact the last 3 Sundays I have gone 13-0 in sets! Of course a lot of that is luck but considering we mix up partners it means I have been playing consistently well. In league I will probably just be playing singles since we have lots of good dubs guys. My movement continues to improve and I hope to incorporate more net play into singles, my transition game is finally feeling 'somewhat' natural thanks to all the dubs I've been playing.

You spotted them two hips ... and still 13-0 ... sweeeeet!!!

We were just about to solve all that other stuff ... and then the threads got deleted. So close.

Tennis (y)

I have hardly played. My park court where I hit the ball machine now has grass growing between cracks. I tried pulling out a clump ... and a chunk of court came up. o_O Add to that ... "feels like 105" is just so WRONG!!!

Which brand?
Centrum Silver men multi + glucosamine + magnesium & potassium (whichever brands work for Walgreen’s 20% first Tuesday senior discount). Also do a daily tea mix of turmeric, ginger and green tea. Turmeric and ginger are supposedly anti inflammatory. They may all be placebos for me, but who cares if I can still get out of bed in the morning and swing a heavy racket.

Do you have the buggywhip over the head now?

Back full swing in 4.0 leagues. Lots of practice matches and been holding up body wise fairly well. Won all so far (dubs), but last night was a killer. Was still 107 degrees on court at 7p as the sun went down. Cranked in the first set (6-3) and then we swtiched teams for another set. Banged some big serves and when I say down for the changeover, it was like someone pulled the dang plug on me. Never used to have these kinds of issues with heat, but man was I drained. Ended up eek'ing out the set 7-5, but it was more about the one opponenets errros that was paried with the college kid (only so much he could do to compensate).

Overall happy fitness and health wise, even with the issues last night. Fingers crossed the body holds up.

It's the heat.

I hadn't hit for 3-4 weeks ... and hit the ball machine Monday morning at 9:00. Already hot ... feels like 101 hot. After an hour+ ... not even hitting that many balls I was drained. Getting ready to pack up ... and friend the ex-college player shows up on his bike and wants to hit with one of my racquets. I didn't even last 30 minutes ... almost bent over between hits (wasn't even playing points). This heat is a biatch!!! at 61 ... not to mention the extra 5lbs that is now an extra 10lbs. Good news is I hit with him another hour yesterday morning ... and no bending over. (y) But ... got another reminder of how much movement/prep/footwork matters when you hit against someone that hits a heavy ball (his FH). For the first 30 minutes ... I was thinking "would love the ttw geezer thread guys seeing me hit this hard". The last 30 minutes were "no chance you guys are seeing this".

Yes, thanks BHBH, for returning to over 50 tennis rather than viagra, etc. How often do you play and against what type of opponents? Do you like Pure Aero much in doubles as singles? I tried my friend’s 2019 PA many times in singles and doubles and against him hitting with his second Pure Aero. His PA is strung with Head Hawk 17 (50lbs). My elbow and wrist only lasts a set until twinges and occasional pain start. I think it would be even worse with your RPMBlast16. He hits hard with max spin trying to emulate Rafa. I could probably use the PA if I only played once or twice a week or only played short sets against soft hitters. I found the PA worked best for me against hard top spinners. In soft singles or old man doubles my shots with the PA seems to be either winners or sailed long. No consistency against soft balls.
I too have given up my PS85s and PT280s in search of “cheater” rackets short of a Weed whacker. Tried Head Speeds, Clash Tour, some older Blades, VCORE98 and Phantom.
So what’s the secret for no arm pain with the PA? And any recommendations on how to hit the PA consistently against soft balls? Lead up the PA and use Higher tension I assume will help but then the arm screams louder.

I didn't feel too bad since all the guys mentioned it and we did finish a full two hours of play. We played several matches over the last weeks and while it's been hot, it's only been high 90's and more humid. That heat last night was like having a blow dryer points at your mouth while trying to breath. lol. And I've got an extra 20 lbs right now, so that for sure isn't helping the cause.

It has been interesting to get back with the 4.0 guys though. Many of us haven't played together for a few years, and we all had been playing various tourney's, matches, and practices. Even last night, my old dubs partner was my opponent last night for the first set, and his comments where the same as most...we really need to get back to the pace, and in that...we just flat out all need to move more back at this level. Throw in the college kid(s) that jump in our practice and it is exponentially more apparent!

As far as anyone seeing me play, I WISH I had video of matches recently. I've been plyaing some solid 4.0 tennis. But yeah, had they watched that last set last night...I'd be a TTW 2.5 at best :D

Due to the heat I am busy re-arranging mixed matches. Our level is scheduled for noon ... which in Vegas right now means over 105F. That is unbearable. Did it once as opponents would not switch. Definitely a test of one's durability.

I moved matches for this weekend to 2 lines at 8am and 1 at 9:30am ..... wouldn't you know one of the players on that line whined about it as 9:30 is too hot. Full on temper tantrum in the group text .... when I offered to switch with her as her partner can't play earlier than 9:30 then suddenly it is all good ....

I have not had a medical checkup since I broke my 2nd tib/fib in April 1971.
Last seen a doc in 1977, for a broken collarbone. Kaiser. He asked "are you tough?" Affirmative. He handed me a x-brace and told me to go home and rest for 6 weeks.
I was racing CME motocross just after 2 weeks. Novice 125.

It is kinda funny for me, and probably just a mental thing, but 100 degrees in the evening feels hotter than getting up and playing at 9a when it is 100 degrees already. lol.

The answer to all this is live in the PNW where this 100 degree thing doesn't happen.

We just worry about rain and there's such a thing as indoor courts for that sort of thing.

Oh ... I have seen many a 4.5 singles player in the summer look like 5.0 1st set, and 2.5 3rd set. Sometimes it was both opponents moving in slow motion in the 3rd set. :-D

Yeah the heat’s been brutal in Central Texas as well...it always is in August. I played a 3 set singles match on Sunday at 5PM (104 with a heat index of 108)...lost 2-6, 7-6(9), 7-5. I don’t know how I hung with him in the 3rd...I was drained.

I didn’t fully recover, or feel like myself until Tues.

Getting old...it isn’t for the timid

It probably is hotter due to the ambient heat retained by the court surface and surrounding concrete and steel.

Gonig to hit tonight around 6p. Looks like it will still be around 108 degrees. We'll see how it goes!

When I was younger I liked playing in the heat, now I avoid it. Try to play in the mornings (when it's around 70 and rising). When I do/did play in high heat I find the only way to totally recover is submerge in a cool pool (deep end is nice and cool, our pool is only heated by the sun). If I don't I'm pretty useless the rest of the day.

Good luck @ChaelAZ tonight, my friend wanted to play after work (we are in the midst of a heat wave) and i said no thanks, I'll wait till tomorrow morning when it's 80.

With the humidity down, should be beautiful after sun down. I played last night and it was pretty nice after 7:45.

Yeah, on court right now. Was 109 when we stepped on. Down to about 100 with the sun setting. Not bad at the moment, but I am already spent!

Good for you .... I had planned to go hit at 6pm ... it was still 108, just couldn't make myself go do it.

Hubby just got back from a 12 mile run he started at 6:30, walked in the house looking only half-dead .... he is currently floating in the pool, I had best go check on him.

It was just a practice hit, and since I was still spent form the previous night...let's just say anything that wasn't only a step away I let hit the back fence and fed a new ball. :D Was good overall just to be out and a few of the high school kids were playing the tournament so I was also there to support them.

12 miles? I haven't run that far since college!

you better make sure he wasn't replaced with android for some futuristic experiments. Not sure how 50 year can do that kind of running on daily basis. After I do 2 miles, I am dead and my back and knees start to hurt so bad, I can't bend down to pick my keys.

I had a friend on another board - she runs 40 marathons a week. She's sponsored by two of the running apparel companies. She's closer to 60 than to 50 and she was a national class runner in college. She knows of a couple that runs 70 miles a week; they're training for something or other. There's a wide variation as to what people can do.

The most I've ever run is 70 miles in a week. My main limiting factor is time. My secondary limiting factor is weather.

yup. I am certain you mean 40 marathons in a YEAR not a week even that is extreme ... because on that tidbit I will say impossible .. ;)

I am not designed for distance running. In HS and college I was a middle-distancer. As short as a 300 (indoor track season) as long as an 800 .... had pretty good times. I am still proud of my 56 PB in the 400.

Even then, could not run more than 5 miles without my entire body screaming at me to stop. That whole "runners high" thing ... I think it is a lie ... cannot possibly happen.

But the hubby .... born for this distance thing and loves it.

Nice ... will be a test for certain.

Have a mixed practice match this morning ... it is currently 6:30am and a nice 82F, by the time I hit the court at 9am it will be 95 climbing to 107.

Bringing ice towels infused with peppermint for the group.

Tomorrow is mixed league match in the morning ... singles ladder in the evening.

Practiced a bit this weekend, but need to start finding different practice partners. Need more consistency and pace than the current partners. I think reconnecting with the 4.0 group will allow me that and that will help get me back match ready. We have a scrimage match this Wednesday against one of the tougher, establsihed 4.0 teams so that will be a good test to see where I am, and where the team is. Will see if I can get video, but since I just record with my phone the heat has been killing it quick (iPhone temp warning).
