The parallels to tennis are many.

I'd suggest concentrating on good form and forgetting about speed. Get good at being able to strum a few notes [C, D, G, & A] and leave the Carlos Santana shredding for later.

Which video are you watching?

Don't try this at home [yet]:

The first time I heard his rendition of Classical Gas, I literally stopped what I was doing and just stood there transfixed.
Tommy Emmanuel is next level guitarist. Don’t try this at home guys. I’ve been playing/noodling on guitar for years. Moreso since stay at home and since tennis is not possible much due to arthritis in feet and back. Keep active as much as you can physically but more importantly mentally.

Ok, guys as you now get out of your home in 2 months, and start play tennis again...……….. How are you guys doing ?? Do you totally suck as you strike that 1st ball ?? do you feel like a Beginner ? or 1st Ball feel like the old ball hitting and hitting like Federer right off the bat ??

Hit for the second time this past week. Body was not sore or tired afterwards - it was the first time. I still have some timing and judgement issues but those could be the different courts we're using.

Strokes seem great, some nagging overuse injuries healed up. The racket feels heavier for some strange reason ... :)
But definitely overall soreness the next day that I wouldn’t have felt after regular play months ago.

ED prevalence also increases with age.

It is ALL self-inflicted through overeating and lack of exercises leading to obesity, blood pressure issues, heart disease, diabetes, etc., which causes ED...and also zaps desire when the body chemistry is out of whack from it.

You want an active/good sex life...eat well, stay in shape, and find a partner who does the same.

Not to mention as you get older your idea of what is attractive increases exponentially. Hell, when you're in your early 20's anyone over 30 seems ancient. When you're in your 50's hardly anyone is ancient!

Thought I'd wake up the thread with my latest video, the ages of the players here are 46 (5.0) 58 (4.5) 61(4.5) and 49 (4.5). All the 4.5 guys were 5.0 at some point in the past (in my case it was briefly in the late 90's). Happy belated 4th ! Edit, make sure to watch in 1080 (settings).

That double feels oddly familiar.

Playing doubles is so hard. I pretty much suck at it because my miss rate on my first volley is pretty high. It's even worse if the ball goes across the net a few times and then I have a chance at a volley. It's hard for me to make a touch shot without being in rhythm by hitting a previous ball, and there are times when I overhit it so badly people think I'm trying to clear the parking lot with the ball.

I used to do drills when I was a lot younger - person at net with a bucket. Hits a NML ball, you step in the court, hit it to the corner. Then a shorter ball, you hit it to the corner. Then a high ball which you volley at the net. Then a lob and you hit an overhead. There's a line of people, maybe three or four so you run around to the back of the line when you're done.

I think that a lot of people run into the volley instead of stopping, seeing where the ball is going and then moving appropriately.

I do tons of volley drills with top age group competitors and have no problem matching their skill as long as I'm in rhythm. The problem is that being predominantly a singles player, if I don't hit every ball that comes to my side of the court and then all of a sudden I get a shot, my miss rate on that first volley is pretty high. I probably tend to overhit it more than anything else that causes an error. If I'm returning serve and do a chip and charge, my miss rate on that first volley is half or less of when my partner is returning serve and I get a volley some time later.

I played a mixed match last night life that. The opponents steered well clear of me with angles and lobs and attacked my partner. When I did gat a chance to touch the ball it was a comedy of errors. Framed volleys, launched overheads into the back fence or down into the net, week sitters right onto their racquets. Only time I got to play was on my service games and playing every 4th game isn't going to let you find a rhythm.

Rhythm in doubles:
When I got back to playing a lot decades after high school, doubles are all that people played in the age group. I also had a hard time finding rhythm. I am getting a little better with practice. This issue also forces me to learn the importance of a good warm up routine. How, the procedure, with whom..
But I feel that there are basically two different to play doubles though. One is social double, or lazy people's double. Each player basically play one side of the court with little planning. The other way is playing to win, like for USTA league matches This is when the server and volleyer plan out the point, which way to serve, formation, poach or fake.. It can be great fun doing the later when the players are able to execute with decent serves, returns and volleys. Good strategizing can rattle even good players, now that is fun. Otherwise it's just playing for harmless fun.

With the advancing age, the priority is actually to stay healthy. Good warm up, have fun but stay away from risky moves that might lead to injury. Getting hurt and Pain is not fun.

Gotta remember that there are good days and there are not so good days. Good days are good because there are not so good days. So.. we need some bad days too. That's life. Enjoy it while we can.

I’ve never quit playing, I did miss some time in the spring when the indoor clubs closed. But once the weather broke I’ve been playing regularly. I love summertime I usually hit every day and many times twice a day, practice in the morning and play sets in the evening.

Love the aggressive net play, nice dubs! I would love to be on that court.

I'm still working from home which allows me to play as much tennis as my wrist allows (which continues it's slow healing process thankfully) so I've been hitting 4 times a week (2 hitting sessions, 1 singles match and 2-3 hours of dubs on sunday). I am more fit than I've been in years and moving so well. I have a pool so I swim daily which I think helps range of motion and flexibility. Also bike, rollerblade and skimboard (since they opened up the beaches, yay). I've changed my serve motion which has been a major improvement.

Hoping leagues are back in fall so I can see how all this practice translates to 'real' match play.

Wow four times a week is great ! I wish I could play that much but I don't think my knees could take it !

Nice doubles.

The big guy with light blue shorts and white shirt has a really good ad court, slice serve down the middle.

OP here. Turned 65 in March. Playing every other day. Singles only. It’s freaking hot and humid here. Believe me, there are still lots of die hard guys my age and older who are players. It’s fun to go on playing sights like Tennis Round......and invite younger guys....age 25 and up to our club to play. They leave here with high hopes, expecting to tolerate older guys and leave a few hours later.....dejected......

However, quite a few of the self proclaimed 4.0 guys have become our friends. They were amazed that we would beat them when we were the same age.....or older than their own fathers. I think it inspires them that they can play longer than expected. I always take care of their lunch, poolside and give financial advice etc. A few of the guys have asked me to dinner with their families. Makes me feel like I have made a difference. I’m in SW Florida. Gives them the opportunity to play on nice clay courts in a gated private community.

Tennis is a funny game. Last week in my men's doubles night, I was awful. Couldn't hit a serve or hit a groundie and only my net game was decent. Went 2-5, 5-0, 1-5 in my round robin play.

Last night I was the man. Getting first serves in, net play on point, groundies reliable. Went 5-2, 5-1, 5-2. Despite playing with fairly weak partners for the last two sets.
We play no ad and I went 6 for 6 on no ad points that night. Just felt really focused all night.

Sometimes you're the lion and sometimes you're the sheep in this game.

I will say that dropping 40 lbs has upped my net game 10 fold. Just that much quicker getting over to poach. Makes feints so much more effective.

All Lions are sheep depending on opponent. A tennis friend ranked top 5 in state in 45s goes on vacation, plays some young jr girl ... and mopes around when he comes back. She had beat the crap out of him ... apparently repeatedly. Left cocky ... came back damaged. I love that story. 8-B

My lesson happened at 55 ... by a little 15-16 year old. At least I saw him a couple of years later deep into an open singles draw. But that is a lie I tell myself... because when I played him ... he was just a little jr player. 8-B

Losing 40lbs is awesome ... congrats. I lost 20lbs at age 55 ... 175 to 155 ... and felt like gravity was almost gone.

i can't hit returns like this anymore but i am finding that i am mistiming my returns alot more than i used to and i also had horrible return of serve day on my last match. finding it getting worse as i get older. Is there anyway i can improve this timing on serve returns ?? Return of serve is tough to practice since you always have to find someone than can serve to you, not easy to find whenever convenient.

Long time no see... Not much tennis lately, twice - sorry, three times during the summer.

More over it seems to be someone sending me signs to slow down as I just bought s new toy. A golfboard, an electric skateboard type of golf scooter shipped from China.

Anyway after a couple of successive rounds I found the driving characters to be really unstable at higher speeds on turf as well, but especially on gravel paved paths...

And ofcourse the board wobled twice before drifting sideways and I became a flight passanger with a rough landing onto my left side. Ukemi style parashute landing rolling over from left to right, but since the occurence was most unexpected and quick the ukemi became a touch too squareish.

Hit my pinky on the first joint making first contact with the ground and cut it deep down to the tendons. Second hit was even more violent and now on the shoulder. Broke my collar bone in four parts and the inner stud peaked ugly underneath the skin.

Just a week ago had it steelplated back into order in theater by a skilled hand specialist and looking into two months of rehab. He told it was quite a puzzle, but he managed in getting the bones as close as hair fraction spacing. Prognosis looking good so far.
