Yeah it broke during my hit and later on I've peeled it off and added Polysporin (and other other unguent with antibiotics first- before I found said Polysporin). No alchool sorry, after it was broken and raw :)

I carry several cut pieces of Hypafix tape which can be used for wounds (It's a dressing retention tape but I'll just put it directly over cuts or other things that I want to keep sterile). I also carry alcohol swabs in my medical kit which comes in handy for tennis from time to time. One of the things that I love about Hypafix is that it's inexpensive and comes in fairly large rolls and it's easy to apply.

I might try it, although other tape won't stay in my palm when I hit FHs...
The racquet, RF97A also has a raised butt cap, so if one finger or two slip off the handle, then the butt cap is in my palm.

It will hold up for up to five minutes. I haven't found anything that will protect the palm for long.

I do have a spray sealant used for wound care but I don't know if it would hold up under tennis. It's main use is to protect the skin from caustic liquids in the digestive system.

64. Gave up singles several years ago. Recently changed from Pure Drive to 2020 Ezone 105. Flexible frame, easy to hit with, plenty of power. Did add some lead. Use Tonic gut. Only physical issue is osteoarthritis in left knee, recently pulled or tore soft tissue behind that knee. Play 98% on clay, inside, have had basal cell carcinoma 3x, over time the sun will tear up anyone's skin.

Yup.

My fitness age, based on VO2Max, is eight years below my actual age. The goal is to get it about 15 years below actual age.

Mad props. I worked pretty hard last year on my VO@max, but just based on the Apple watch scoring. While not as accurate as a lab test, the beginning of last year I was able to increase a few points to 40, but looking at the new average for the end of last year and slow start to this year I am only averaging 35 now, so some work to do.

Anyway, I was just reading up on a lot of the biological age tests coming up more and more. Not sure I will get any tests done, but interesting to see how health management and measurement is changing. A lot more focus on longevity of health for us older peeps.

There are two ways to meet your goal. One, you could do a lot of hard work, sweat, suffer. Or two, you could just live until your 90s. At that point, just breathing is 15 years better than expected average. If you're lucky, you can make your goal the easy way and the hard way. Keep it up.

Similar to my numbers. I was at 42 in 2020 and dropped to 33 with the pandemic (losing the treadmill option was a very big hit). It's at 37 right now and looking to get back to 42. What really helped was acquiring the clothes to run when it's 20-30 degress outside and running through the winter. I'm back to running in the gym when it is too cold outside but will only go if your COVID numbers are really low. I use the VO2Max score on my Garmin but I'm pretty sure that all of these watches are similar in how they work. Research that I've read indicate that it's accurate with a variance of 5% which is good enough for me.

Higher VO2Max also means lower resting heart rate, better quality of sleep and lower stress levels. At least these things are correlated with me. The ability to see your metrics over time is a great benefit of these medical devices (I consider them medical devices).

If I just make sure to walk at a 4.0 pace (15 min miles) and log at least 4 miles per day I can keep that VO2max around 38. I was getting higher with getting back to running and getting back out on the mountain bike. Right now it is mostly tennis, which still says a lot about staying active like that at least 3 times per week to be able to maintain an average or a bit above average rating with no other interventions. Speaks to the literature out about tennis being a good life long sport for overall health.

HIIT activities are better at supporting heart health though most people find steady-state cardio to be more enjoyable. I'd guess that my getting back to tennis has helped my score as well. The thing that will always get it higher is doing running intervals but I have to have a good running base to do a lot of high-speed intervals. Getting speed up is best done on a quarter-mile track too. Treadmills limit you to 9-10 MPH and roads and sidewalks usually have variations where you can trip or where you have to slow down. I will have to figure out the local middle-school track when I go back to using it as schools are back in-session three times a week.

It should be warm enough here to actually play tennis outside for one day this week (60s) and we may try that if the courts are open and clean. We normally start in May.

Already in the 80's in AZ. Might have a few dips the next month or so, but good time to be here. Just goes to hell - literally - not soon after with the 110+.

I’m still at 44 and still not mitten by covid-19, fitness age 26 @53. I’ve started winter biking and getting training effects up each week now. Had the plate dug out the shoulder, which is a touch sore and swollen, but seems otherwise very promising. Not in pain, just little numb and swollen.

Looking forward going to tennis practice Tuesday morning.

We had our tennis facility inspected by local authority and that reduced the capacity down to 10 people + coaches On a four court space, which is crazy. Bowling alleys are closed and restaurants only serving take-away.

The IA-number has gone up to about 400s, but the government is playing ball on, who is the right party to call mandatory certification of either negative test or proof of vaccination. foreign employees seem not to care and there seems to be quite a number of them getting the disease. The worst are them, without symptomes not keeping distance and not wearing masks.

Getting really tired of the restrictions and stuff, not being able to see family and friends. Mom and dad luckily got their shots last week.

Snowing again, by the way.

Which state?

My state is fully open. Public schools are required to have at least two days of in-person instruction.

There is a state mask mandate. Our active cases dropped from 7,000 to 2,000 and have stabilized at 2,000 though I expect that number to go down as people get used to the new normal. I started going to the gym every day about three weeks ago. There are still a lot of precautions in the gym and on the indoor tennis courts but they seem to be effective. I try to go when the place is mostly empty.

Got a new iphone finally this Saturday, was out for a match yesterday....and almost broke it in my first service game! My wife would have killed me. Went from the 8+ to the 12ProMax now and really do love the video quality. This one only uploaded at 30FPS instead of the 60fps it was shot at, so gotta figure that out. But you can watch here as I almost made a $1300 new phone into a costly repair! Starts at the :40 second mark here.

Match wise, J is like my MEP - he is a solid 4.0, going to the NTRP 4.0 nationals, and is a deceivingly solid player with unorthodox shots that I just cross stepped on. Lost this one 1 and 2 or 3 (can't remember), but we play again next Wednesday. Have some ideas for at least holding my serve better.

Hope everyone is getting on court and is healthy. Off to pick up restrung racquets.

Thanks for the video. It's always a pleasure having you share. Your a gracious sport and compete hard. So you may not have had your best day. I'm sure there were a few more errors than you would have liked. He seemed to only be able to generate offense on the forehand side. Any short ball simply rolled deep and high to his backhand will set you up to finish at net. I liked how you dropped a few of his droppers too. If you're not comfortable taking that ball deep to his backhand it's a good play. I think you'll beat him next Wednesday. You have the far superior groundstrokes but you don't get enough reward for this superiority. As long as he is not running around the backhand I would suggest playing it in the middle of the court. It will minimize his offense on the forehand and when you get the short ball you can roll it deep and high to his backhand and come in. In the longer term I would look at developing some weapons with your midcourt groundstrokes. Keep us posted.

Thanks. Honestly I appreciate meeting and talking with people as much, if not more than the tennis itself. So I am glad that shows, and I had some great talk with J after. Unfortunately, your first few sentences are my game at this point as I try to change some things (just posted a bit about it in the stuck at 3.5 thread), but suffice to say I am not missing or out of position by much right now, but I am missing and out of position often. I've also mentioned, I am KINDA dogmatic when playing, so in this match I was trying a few things with my serve, was going to play a more controlled and relaxed style overall, and was trying to move him deep with some lofty volleys and lobs. His backhand has giving too much variety of shots so I went to the FH more often to try and get pace and more readable balls. That didn't pan out and I could have changed, and I will go into next week and be dogmatic about attacking the backhand. I will most likely also try back to more first strike tennis if I am feeling it.

It is really interesting though that in my dubs game my midcourt transition shots are pretty good, but I don't do that much in singles, so that is a good area to look towards developing. All good things and thanks for the comments!

As the kids like to say, "I know, right?" One of the least talked about hurdles in improving a tennis game is learning how to reprogram your game and incorporate new shots. I think your "dogmatic" approach is scientific. It probably won't yield optimal results but it will begin to give you the tactical sense of when and how to implement these shots. I've experienced improving a shot and actually taking a half-step back competitively for a time.

It's great that you have relationships with the people you play, so there's ongoing competition and not some short-term high stakes battling. I was reading in another thread how someone's kids had given up tennis because they felt that competition was about crushing the spirit of their opponents. The argument was that golf allowed for each competitor to compete against the course but not each other. I haven't always been so gracious on the court but I always have been off it. I care about the people I play with and hope that their games flourish too. I'm learning to be more gracious in my senior years, but every now and then I fail. I admire sportsmanship above all else.

When I was working with my son and many of the juniors and high school kids, we all made sure there was sportsmanship in line with the competition. I do have this theory about being too nice and competing, and I know other may relate to that when I even mention it, so depending on what a person's interest is in the sport, there is room for dicusssion. But to me, at the rec level it shouldn't be an issue...yet we always find those few folks in their 40's still thinking 3.5, 4.0, or 4.5 tennis is just a step to their road to Wimbledon. :D

Higher VO2Max also means lower resting heart rate,

I know that you are an advocate of the VO2Max, but that's harder to measure than the "heart rate recovery time", did you bother doing that? You need about 8 minutes...

https://dr-wendihealth.com/2020/02/16/three-ways-to-measure-your-cardiovascular-fitness/

"Let’s suppose you are going to use a stationary bicycle at the gym. Ride in the yellow zone shown on the chart for at least 5 minutes to warm up. Then spend a couple of minutes increasing the intensity and then drop back and ride easy until your breathing is normal but you feel warmed up and ready to ride at a high intensity. When you are ready, increase your intensity and try to get close to 85% of your maximum HR and hold that for 2 minutes. Warning, this is high intensity exercise and you will become out of breath and feel lactic acid in your muscles. If you increase the intensity above 85% then you will likely fatigue sooner than 2 minutes. If you are running outside then choose a pace that is maximally difficult but you can hold it for 2 minutes.

When the 2 minutes is up then you are going to take your pulse (manually like in step 1 or using a HR monitor) immediately after the exercise and then again 1 and 2 minutes later. How long it takes your HR to return to normal is a very good indicator of cardiovascular health. The quicker you return to normal, the healthier your cardiovascular system is. Someone with good cardiovascular fitness will recover by 15-25 beats per minute within the first minute. Athletes can have a decrease in HR by 30-60 seconds per min. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that if heart rate only decreases by about 12 beats per minute or less then you have a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease and it is a powerful predictor of overall mortality."

Then we can both be lazy.

No sense doing additional work when there is technology readily available to do it for us.
But I want to compare myself to a runner like you....
You can't take 3 minutes (2 to do the exercise and 1 afterwards to measure your HR?).
Besides do you really trust technology on a watch so much?

Besides do you really trust technology on a watch so much?

Try this: https://lmgtfy.app/?q=apple+watch+vo2max+accuracy

Anyway, Apple watch and other fitness trackers have been tested for a decade + for accuracy, and while not perfect, they give excellent overall feedback on health and performance. Like people who complain about a scale not giving ounces, there are just some metrics that are truly meaningless for 99% of the fitness world, and people tend to get distracted by it and let it cloud improvements. On this forum it is nuance math angles, percentages, and the like were dropping 10 pounds would do wonders, or just hitting down the middle more in points, or building shot tolerance and consistency.

FYI - Apple watch easily shows recovery time too - https://9to5mac.com/2020/02/13/apple-watch-see-heart-rate-recovery-what-it-is-more/
For me, both losing and improving fitness and data scores can happen over a consistent month, either exercising daily, or doing nothing daily, and I can change VO2max by a point or two in that time frame.

Find someone on r/running and ask there.

We had a discussion on watch VO2Max here a long time ago. The research indicates accuracy to 5%. I mainly use it to track progress so the absolute number doesn't matter that much.

Or you could humor me? lol As it took you 1 minute to write that reply, 2 more and you'd be done measuring your "heart rate recovery time", so that I'd have a benchmark from a tennis player who runs (yourself)...

This reminds me of a sport bike guy who told me he liked to race on the track. When he told me he raced Harley Sportsters I was surprised. Then he told me you'd have to be crazy to actually get out there on a sport bike because there's always some guy trying to prove they're the next Wayne Rainey (the conversation was decades ago) or Valentino Rossi in more modern terms. I guess we shouldn't complain. The overzealous may get on our nerves a little but they aren't risking our lives.

Lost this one 1 and 2 or 3 (can't remember), but we play again next Wednesday. Have some ideas for at least holding my serve better.

Hope everyone is getting on court and is healthy. Off to pick up restrung racquets.
Chael, like @ByeByePoly has said, "tennis is not fair"! Other posters have told you that you have much better strokes than your opponent, so keep it up and gl! :)

Last week's match with J. Tried to play a little more aggressive and go for a few more shots. Still...so many hitting errors where I feel no pressure, am setup, and the swing feels about right. Just leaves me shaking my head. Had an amazing practice just the night before for a couple hours working on high ball aggressive high clearance returns and couldn't seem to get that to translate in the match. Meh...I can only play where I am at and continue to work to at least maintain, but hopefully get a few steps back. Did end up fairing better overall, but lost 3/6, 4/6. J has the 4.0 nationals this upcoming weekend, so will see how he does.

Just uploaded so probably low quality version is only up so far. Included more of the good and bad points in this video so you can see where the wheels keep falling off the cart. Been this way since last year. Just nuance errors (little wide, little long, little low).

Good battle ... both of you. Birds were enjoying it ... sounded like an Aussie video.
