Sharapova/Halep withdraws from Brisbane

When top players "withdraw" due to injury from 250s and the like (especially before a big tournament), the cynic in me usually just translates it to "I want to save myself for the big one".

I also just read that Serena withdrew from her opening Hopman Cup match. Seems like the top women are dropping like flies already and the season hasn't even commenced yet!
This happens at Brisbane and Sydney many years.

They'll be at the AO.

Exactly. How injured can you be when you are playing in IPTL for money after season ends. Sharapova just came back from injury break. Sounds BS to me.
Same to Halep. She had tendinitis problem at WTA singapore but that's been 2 months already. She was supposed to play Vika in R1.

IPTL is easy to play injured. The "matches" are one set, no ad, and they only have to play a couple times.

They don't want to wear themselves out (probably bit off more than they thought they could chew doing IPTL too).

Sydney draws are mostly joke. Players enter only because they can withdraw giving injury excuse.
It's probably a case of they have to decide ahead of time if they're going to enter (for practice) so they do and then later decide whether they'll actually show up or not.

Fed does this for Miami, MC, and Canada many years.

Maybe.

I bet they think it's worth it for the huge money (even if injured), and then they go and injure themselves more or something.

I'd probably do IPTL too if I was a pro, these guys retire at 30-35 and money is not to be sniffed at.

Lol, a #minor indeed. But she won it last year, so I doubt she would withdraw if she wasn't having at least a little problem. Fully expect to see her in Melbourne, of course :)
Belated happy New Year to you Vanhool - I hope you are well and looking forward to what will likely be another stressful season of tennis haha. :) Just wondering what your expectations for Serena are for 2016. And btw, is AngieB still around or did the mods finally #get rid? ;)

AngieB is no longer around. She got married to Chico, and they are expecting their first child in June. That child, foretold by soothsaying moderators, to grow into the greatest poster T.T has ever known.

Happy new year! I think your year will be less stressful than mine :) I honestly have no idea what to expect from Serena this year. She is getting old and injuries are a much bigger deal as time goes on. There's a chance she won't do diddly. Hopefully she manages all her issues and pulls off an epic year, which is possible, since she seems to enjoy overcoming obstacles and not havng a lot of expectations placed on her. I won't hold my breath on that. Even 1 major and I would be super happy. How many do you think Novak will win?

I don't know if #Angie is #permabanned, but it seems like it. It doesn't say banned under her name, but when you click on her profile, it's unavailable. She has not been active at TF for months either, but not banned over there. Hopefully she's ok and has just been busy with the holidays. Anyway, with the #major success your man had last year, you have hopefully garaged your #BrownPinto and are enjoying life on #MajorHighway partying like it's #2011/2015 :)

Apparently Maria injured her forearm during practice. And the Aussie newspapers came up with a strange stat as well: out of the 6 tournaments she's been scheduled to play in Queensland/Australia over the years, she's pulled out just before her 1st round match in 4 of them.

I genuinely believe Sharapova. She loves Brisbane and had fun at the summers night. And the defending champion! Halep I don't believe, seemed fine and suddenly withdrew after the draw came out and she was to face Vika in the 2nd round.
Pulled this stunt last year withdrawing Sydney days before the comp was to start. Yet magically went on to be completely fine for the AO where she reached the QF. She's fast losing a fan in me. If she withdraws from Sydney then does well at AO I'm done with her.
