Should Federer skip the clay season?

They do get paid a lot of money for competing, and this is exposure as well, and exposure in a market equals money.

I'm sorry to say but like the rest of us they think about money as the measure of success as well.

Yes he should. He has no chance of winning another French or probably even another Masters on clay. Rest and prepare for Wimbledon, the only slam he has even faint hope of ever winning again, and his chances would probably increase with more rest.

Are you scared that if Fed does play, Rafael might get ousted like 09 and Fed might one again. :twisted:

Play Madrid, Rome and RG;

3 tournaments won't be too taxing and hopefully he can pick up around 1000 points.

Fed is 32 now and age seems to have caught up with him. I think he doesn't have much of a shot at RG, unless both Novak and Nadal especially the latter lose in the earlier rounds. He could also lose to one of the power hitters like Tsonga last year.

So, should he cut his losses and focus completely on Wimbledon like what Murray did last year? He has Edberg by his side now so why not work on improving his net game some more and focus purely on grass, save some energy for tournaments he's more likely to win? Note that he already has the record for weeks at #1 so playing every tournament for ranking points seems counterproductive.

Thoughts?

If Federer wears a wig he might be able to win the womens French Open, but even there Na or Serena's powerful groundstrokes would probably be too much for him at this stage. :)

As long as Fed still makes semifinals I wouldn't rule him out as a candidate to win another slam. Unlikely but surely not impossible, as we've seen a couple of days ago.
