Should you always go with the measured grip size?

i'm about to make a racket purchase and i've used the famous ruler test to determine my grip size

the ruler shows a grip size slightly above 4 1/2 but my question is should i stick with that measurement or go for say size 3 to account for the fact that I'll be using an overgrip which slightly increases the width?

i know that you can always increase the grip size with a heatshrink sleeve and overgrips but you cannot go the other way around

Go one size smaller if your preferred OG increases grip size that much. You should also be aware, base on anecdoctal hearsay, some manufacturers make their grip sizes slightly bigger or smaller than stated. So I hope you demo'ed the frame in question so that your estimate of grip size is applicable.

i've used a 4 3/8 on my old Wilson Six.One for the last ten years and i only recently noticed how frustrating it is to play after an hour since the grip begins to slip and move excessively so i have to grip even harder to prevent this

my new racket is going to be the Speed Pro 360 but i have no idea how Head make their grips compared to Wilson

So now you say what you will be purchasing! Head grip sizes feel smaller than stated when compared to Wilson/Prince/PK. That's based on my grip size which is also 4 ½. Go with the larger size. The good thing about Head is you can change the pallet if it still is too small. You should know someone who uses a Head frame and try their grip.

The ruler test is stupid.

By that I should use a size they dont even make (bigger than 5/8) but I use a 1/4 and love it. Smaller sizes are better for spin.

Go with what feels good to you.

agree with above comments, ruler rule is dumm (no longer applies) :) ,, diff manufacturers are different, will work for one and not for other
the old'ish head handles complemented the continental grips!!,, the new generation is more square, favoring the different range of grips

like @esgee48 said, you have to also consider the overgrip!!
like @Shaolin said, grip it and see if you like the feel

i preffer gripping the handle and fitting 1 more finder width

Overgrips are generally thought to increase the grip size by about half of the size, i.e., if you install the overgrip on size 4 (4 1/2), it will go to size 4.5 (4 4.5/8) but not to size 5. This, of course, may vary depending on the thickness of overgrip, some of them are thicker than the others.

While you can increase the grip size by one size using a heat-shrinking sleeve, it will add weight to the handle (will make the racquet more head-light) and will increase its weight slightly. This may or may not make a difference for you.

Is it only my impression that most players do not follow the grip size recommendation but go with what they learned to use when they started? There are so many people using a much smaller grip size than recommended. I think the best solution is to try to find a demo racquet with the grip size you are considering and decide based on your comfort and feel (or borrow one from a friend for a day).

its too late i already have the new racket

ive always played with a 4 3/8 though so tons of familiarity there even if my recommended grip is 4 1/2

as i mentioned i can wrap some grips if needed
