Slazenger Pro X1 Review

I got my Slazenger X1 today and strung it up at 57 pounds with Tecnifibre Spinfire 18 (1.20 mm). Having just come out of juniors, my NTRP is somewhat sketchy. Played for four years on 7 year running state championship high school tennis team. Doubles state runner up my senior year. This was 5A ball, the biggest division. At my club, there are numerous 4.5 players who play mostly doubles, and I beat them rather handily in singles. My doubles partner and I also win fairly easily in 4.5 doubles. My racket lineage is as follows: Prince Precision Response OS, Prince Michael Chang Titanium Midplus, Babolat Pure Drive +, Head Liquidmetal Prestige MP, Prince Original Graphite Midplus, back to the Pure Drive + and now the Slazenger X1. I have been playing with the Pure Drive + for the past three years (the prestige and pog just did not work for me) and have decided that it is time for a change. My forehand and serve with the PD are blistering, and my backhand is more of a rally ball (though I can flatten it out to hit winners. I volley well with the Pure Drive but do not get the feel I would like. Having played with the PD for so long, the prestige played way too flexy--I could feel the racket flex on impact and hated the feeling. The POG is a great racket, but I just was not getting the depth I wanted on my backhand. The X1 may have solved all my problems (feel on volleys and driving the backhands).

Serves
I have not had much of a chance to serve with the racket. I hit several kickers that had great bite (although the serve is no better than with the PD). Will post more about the serve later if anyone wants.

Volleys
This is where the racket shines most brightly. Sticking volleys has never been easier. Solid feel, great maneuverability, and stability are all present in great amounts with this stick. Touch volleys are great. Although the racket is somewhat stiff, the feel still is there. It's just something you have to experience; there is no other racket I have ever hit with (and I have hit with many) that feels like this one.

Groundies
I was driving my backhand deep into the corners. Control was pinpoint with this frame. My forehands were extremely heavy. Although I was not hitting with quite as much pace as I do with the PD, my balls were much heavier due to the spin. The frame is extremely spin friendly. Dipping passing shots was a breeze. My slice backhand was skidding and had great directional control. Feel for dropshots was amazing, that is, compared to the PD.

Return of Serve
Taking big cuts at the return was easy due to the low swingweight (315) of this frame. Control was superb, as was stability and the depth of the returns. Was able to get around on everything so I cannot comment on blocking serves back.

Overheads
Again, control is the theme of this racket. There is certainly enough power to put them away, but the control is what impresses me the most.

If there is anything anyone wants to know about this racket, please post below. I know Ed (Nobadmojo) and others have reviewed this frame...I just wanted to add my findings. I am not going to talk about which NTRPs should use it. It does swing fairly easily, but you must be able to provide your own power. I am looking forward to seeing how I fare in matches with it as opposed to the Pure Drive. Hope this helps anyone interested.

Slazenger X-1

thinking about this stick,
can you tell me more about the serve

why you like it more than the LM I prestige?

thanks

More about the serve...
My serves are not as big as they were with the Pure Drive, but I find the racket very comfortable to serve with. My flat serves are as big pace wise, but my kickers are not getting quite the same pace. I feel like they will get there though. The swingweight of the Slazenger is great for serving. I can really whip it through the air. Serving control is fantastic. I did not really expect my serve to be better with the X1, so I may be underrating it. Serving and volleying quite a bit, i must say that if I get my serve up and to the backhand, the X1 is a much more deadly stick than the Pure Drive. Volleys are a breeze, and big forehands can be placed on a dime. I am still impressed by the power you can generate off the ground, especially off the return. Hope this helps. Post with any more questions.

V nice review, concise and to the point. Is it me or has there been a decline in frequency of the TW reviews :( (no slating in this, just observation). Actually following that statement, TW should review this racquet coz i know it has a following :D

Slazenger is coming out with a few more frames in March, they are going to capitalize on the success of the x1 and bring out a few tweener frames etc.
they are ramping up to be a global player in the frame market. TW will get these frames & specs soon
