So did the new generation suddenly give up social media?

Zara

I considered that too. If this was true we would see them in the latter stages of all the big tournaments now and here we are at the 2022 USO as the most recent example - Federer is literally retired, Djokovic couldn't enter, Nadal was way below average and had other things in mind and it was teenage Alcaraz who took advantage, not Tsitsipas (1st round loss) or Medvedev (4th round loss). The guy's the real deal.

Alcaraz did take advantage but that could be a fluke too. It’s also a case of one too many things aligning for him.

We can't expect for a Big 3 level player in every generation. I feel like Tennis outside the Big 3 is more or less the same since they showed up.
I wasn't expecting a 30-slam winner. Only naive people do.

Just one slam. 5-6 players born between 1989-1999 winning a slam each. Or one of them winning 2-3.

That should have been the barest minimum. But they totally botched it. Worst generations ever.

I'd have him as the favorite.

As I said, Alcaraz is the first player I've seen in the last 10-15 years who I could easily see challenge the big 3 in their primes. He just has that X factor, as simple as that. At 19 he's already beaten everyone of worth (including Nadal on clay), 2 Masters, just bagged a Slam and is the top ranked player in the world. He didn't even play that well at the US Open too which I repeat he won at 19. This is no accident.

Yes, he beat Nadal on clay and yet, Nadal was the one to take yet another RG to home.

His USO came at the expense of Sinner, Tiafoe and Ruud. It’s more like a case of being there at the right time and place and nothing more. No reason to read too much into it when one looks at all the details.

There is no correlation between social media and yips. I cannot see any possible relation. I can understand pampered kids being not driven enough but how does spending time on tiktok make one mentally weak? Mentally weak athletes have been around for long, no?
They are nearly ALL mental midgets.

Hello?

Yeah... a slam win.

Anybody can do it.

And anybody can play rallies like those guys. Easy-peasy.

Even 22 slams is nothing.

Literally nothing.

Slams are for little children.

If Tsitsipas/Medvedev and crew were on the same level they should've been there in the latter stages instead, but they weren't.
They aren’t good man - they can’t string a few good wins together. They simply lack the consistency which is why I can buy the weak era thing but not the social media angle. There are visibly huge flaws in their games - Berretini has one of the weakest backhands for the rest of the game he possesses. Tsitsipas cannot return serves for the love of god, medvedev has a poor transition game like Zverev, kyrgios who spends all his life on social media is actually better than the rest talentwise but is a buffoon, thiem worked so much that his body gave up… they just aren’t that good. The few times they showed promise were when they could string a few games together. Next tournament and they cannot any more. This is department of talent, not social media.

Again, he's 19 years old + he didn't even play that well at the US Open comparing what he brought to the table when he won Miami and Madrid. 5 titles this year, 9 top 10 wins (and the season isn't over yet). The fact that he's meeting the expectations which are so insanely high for a 19-year old is absolutely crazy. He's done nothing wrong so far.

No reason to get over excited about Alcaraz’s win where he beat virtually nobody.

Even so, I’ll take Raducanu’s win last year over CA’s this year.

Social media was part of their upbringing.

It wasn't for me and all the earlier generations.

So would you deny every sociologist's claim that upbringing affects our development?

It's all genetic?

Society hasn't changed at all? Exactly the same?

Very doubtful.

Or maybe all of them are very solid regular tier 2 players, but because of social media the actual tier 1 players have gone missing? Maybe these guys are the Berdychs, Tsongas and Ferrers of the current era, but there are no Federers or even Beckers. sssss

And because guys who should be in their primes winning Slams right now prefered watching Tik Toks and Medvedev/Zverev/Tsitsipas etc. got all the flak lmao.

So why does Alcatraz winning USO bother you so much?

Absolutely not that is not what I am claiming at all. Social media is part of their upbringing as much as it is any kid’s born in the same era who is shining in another field which also requires hours of training and practice.

It’s not that he didn’t play well but that was the best he was able to offer and somehow got the win and it probably because he wanted it the most especially when things opened up significantly for him. I mean, Tiafoe, after all did all the hard work.

Anyway, I don’t mean to detail Azure’s thread anymore with this CA stuff.

Social media is drastically affecting the development of ALL kids, irrelevant what careers they later pursue.

Pretty much all psychologists agree on this. They only disagree on the extent and how precisely.

Every age affects upbringing. It is surely affecting. It is not the cause for the failure of the lost gen or next gen.

Of course social media affects how all of us are behaving, responding etc. anyone who denies that is quite stupid because we are already seeing effects of it.

You seem to misunderstand my posts as much as you misunderstand pro tennis... if that's even possible.

Let me clarify. Or try to. Bear with me...

I am analyzing you, for want of a better word, I'm not angry at you. Huge difference. Why would I be angry. I am not invested in your intellectual development or future or anything to do with you. I don't even know you. It's your bad logic which fascinates me, and I always pursue bad logic on a forum, because it is interesting to learn about bad logic, how it functions, what makes it tick.

I am trying to figure out how a self-proclaimed tennis fan is so annoyed with a debut slam winner who won in spectacular fashion. It's a huge paradox.

A mystery.

It's that simple.

Now, you can get upset at me if you want, for finding it positive that a new face finally won again, but you needn't do so.

I said it was A cause. Several reasons have to be part of st this strange as a row of catastrophic generations. This is a piece of the puzzle.

It's scary, this instant gratification obsession can literally affect anyone. We used to have family gatherings and just talk about anything or even watch TV and comment on whatever was going on. Now everyone's in their bloody phones looking at things which are absolutely meaningless.

I deleted all my social media (apart from Messenger/WhatsApp just for conversation purposes) months ago and feel much happier and I 100% encourage everyone else to do the same. I even stopped using the phone for every nanosecond that I'm not doing anything just to give other people an example that you can still travel by train or a subway and not watch 100 memes of funny cats. People are missing out on life, simple interactions, conversations. If Jesus came back 95% of us would miss it, because we would all have our eyes glued to our damn phones.

You got me agreeing on everything except the funny cats.

Literally the best thing about the internet.

I never had Twitter, don't have Instagram, very rarely use Facebook (and only to find info).

I hate that crap.

And when I get tired of TTW I don't show up for weeks or months...

You have become more spiritual, I see.

Which is fine. If someone can make millions of dollars, never have to work a day in their life, and not give up their 20's and 30's - why should they be criticized by a bunch of nobody wage slaves? People who only exist to make some rich guy a little richer.
Because it feels unfair seems like a logical answer.

You would think it would only make your dating life easier, but in reality it distorts reality. It's basically a validation app for women at this point, for men I don't even know what it brings anymore lmao. Even the actual players (I know two guys personally) who have one thing in mind would rather go to a nightclub than use Tinder.

Like women just want to have a million dudes "matched" because it tells them they're attractive or something?

And the timeframe isn’t important? The big 2 in their mid-30s and the other one almost retired? At least the next gen faced the big two while they were still strong and going.
Wouldn't go that far. The Next Gen are also lucky with their timing. That they couldn't make proper use of it is their fault.

Do coaches prohibit mobile phones being brought to practice sessions?

I doubt it. They should though.

Lendl did and stated it publicly. When he took over the coaching of Murray, Andy was on video games 7 hours a day. Lendl told him before they signed their contract that would cease and it did. Andy started up his addiction again once Ivan exited the stage.

Zverev and Lendl's partnership ended very quickly because Lendl demanded he put his phone away during practice, at least according to Ivan. Zverev claimed it was because Ivan only talked to him on court about "golf and his dogs."

Well, Lendl retired with 8 slams and 94 tournaments. When Zverev leaves the games he'll have about .01% of those accomplishments, so I know who I believe.
