Spanish players on Grass?

For a nation of supposed clay court specialists who apparently detest playing on grass ("it is for cows") how come no less than 5 of them have won Wimbledon in the last half-century (Santana, Martinez, Nadal, Muguruza and now Alcaraz) and 3 have also won the main warm-up for Wimbledon ie. Queen's (Nadal, Lopez twice and now Alcaraz). Nadal and Alcaraz even completed the rare Queen's-Wimbledon double, Alcaraz on his maiden appearance in both finals!!

Martinez even won her only Slam singles title at Wimbledon (after dismissing grass with the well-worn phrase)!!

Is this "Grass is just for cows" routine just a clever smokescreen to lull us all into a false sense of security about their chances at SW19 and Queen's??

Any thoughts?

The classical grass court nations have not so many grass courts and events anymore, if any at all. Spain has that new event in Mallorca, Germany some at Stuttgart, Berlin and Halle, more than whole Australia or the US, which once had plenty of grass events. So the traditional distribution of grass and clay experts is no longer working. Basically we have now all hard court players, who do adapt their hard court game more or less to clay or grass. No natural grass or clay artists anymore.

It must be embarrassing that Spain with their athletes has such good results on that surface and that the United Kingdom and especially England have not had the results they expected at the pinnacle of tennis.

Yes but there were no ATP grasscourt events in Spain when 4 of the past Spanish champions won the title (Mallorca only came about a couple of years ago).

Interestingly Alcaraz, like Nadal before him, has said that Wimbledon was the tournament he most wanted to win so I'm beginning to take this "grass is for cows" attitude with a hefty pinch of salt!!

When you consider the immense regularity with which this country produces prominent players, and the amount it creates from generation to generation, that a few of them should be able to win Wimbledon across the course of almost 60 years doesn't seem that strange:D
