Sport Bible ranks 50 Greatest Sports Athletes of All Time

Some very questionable choices like having Venus Williams ahead of Pele!! And Nastase ahead of Borg? And no freaking Pete Sampras on the list even though they have named quite a few tennis players.

Roger Federer comfortably ahead of all tennis players, as should be for now, at #3. Nadal at #18 and Djokovic makes the top 40 at #32.

What do you guys think of it?

I also feel strange about Nadal being ahead of Michael Phelps. I would understand if he was the Slam leader in tennis but he isn't, yet.

Pete Sampras completely forgotten while Ille Nastase is ranked higher than Borg. And Venus Williams is ahead of them both lol
RF in the top 5 is rightly ranked though. And maybe Nadal should be closer to the top 10 too.
These kind of lists are usually a disaster anyway because there's no one on Earth actually qualified to make one. No one is fully invested in the history of every major sport.

But this one is just weird. Tyson above Jordan? Dimaggio above Ruth? Montana the only NFL athlete and he's all the way up at #5 like it's still 1989. Seems to be a rather heavy tennis and skiing bias of all things too.

There are many questionable or even absurd classifications here.

- First of all, as good as Gretzky was, ice hockey is a niche sport. It is huge only in Canada and important in USA, Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland. That’s it. Just think about sprinting, the most basic sport of them all, and how Bolt dominated it. He MUST be ahead of Gretzky. Michael Phelps at #21 is even more laughable.

- There are also way too many athletes from other big US leagues in that list (not American Football though). IMO out of those only Basketball is a real international sport. So if anyone should be near the top it would be Michael Jordan. Why is he 10th and Gretzky 1st? Jordan is a similar legend of his sport anyway.

- Compared to all this the best football player, the most heavily contested sport in the world, is ranked 24. And then in the end I guess they thought: "Well, we must fill in some random footballers now" and that’s why Schnellinger, Schuster and Gerrard made it, just behind the great Pele. :-D

- The list suggests that Mike Tyson is the second best boxer of all time, only behind Ali. That is ridiculous.

- Serena Willams is 7th and Steffi Graf not in the Top 50. What can be said about this? Also Serena is the only woman near the top at all.

- Phil Taylor was already mentioned, and if darts is considered a sport (which it is), he should at least make the Top 50, despite it’s a niche sport of course. But what about Alexander Karelin (graeco-roman wrestler), arguably the most dominant athlete in his sport ever and likely the strongest man on earth in his prime? People from Russian or generally Eastern-European background are almost non-existant in this list anyway. Or what about Jahangir Khan (Squash)?

- While it’s at least debatable if Ayrton Senna is the better driver than Michael Schumacher, there is no way that Niki Lauda should make this list and not Schumacher (or Hamilton).

And those are only the most blatant absurdities here...

A caught doper in the top 10? Jack Nicklaus in 6th, but Tiger Woods, one of the most influential athletes in the history of sports, not even in the top 50??? Jordan barely making the top 10. Messi as the best footballer in 24th, behind countless basketball players and other American ball players. Absolutely laughable. And as a Norwegian myself, Kjetil Andre Aamodt is NOT the greatest alpine skier of all time(which this list is clearly statng by ranking him as such). Stenmark, Maier, Tomba, Svindal, Miller, Hirscher, Eberharter should all be ranked above him, just to mention a few.

Thanks for a good laugh though ;)

In the end, they got the tennis ranking right within the sport itself among the Big 3, which is what matters. I don't see Nadal leapfrogging 15 spaces with a couple more French Open. No one will care enough to put him above Federer.

Aamodt was very good at Olympic Games and World Championships though. Some of the others you mentioned were more consistent in the World Cup, but have a much lesser medal record at big events. It’s also problematic to compare with the old times when less disciplines were contested. Aamodt however could potentially win any race from downhill to slalom (although he often had longer phases without much success).

But talking about winter sport and Norway, the greatest winter athlete of all time IMO is Bjorn Daehlie (who also isn't part of this laughable list).

And by the way, the greatest (in terms of nicest) Olympics ever were in Lillehammer 1994. Everything was perfect there. Great venues, good weather (not one single event was postponed) and an audience which was fair to everyone while still rightfully cheering for their own athletes. It was the first Olympics I saw on TV as a small child, and never was it beaten as a whole experience in terms of watching a multi-sport event.

Strangely, for his standards Daehlie even underperformed a bit at that games.

And Roger Federer was voted the best tennis player of the 10s according to ESPN. Shows how relevant these lists really are. ;)
The best considering he didn't have the luxury of facing no ATG younger than him for 10+ years and still won a bunch of Slams.

They put Mike Tyson ahead of Michael Jordan!
That is the funniest thing I've ever heard of in my life!
MJ and Ali have always universally been considered the 2 best athletes ever, so this list is bizarre and juvenile.
And I'm a Mike Tyson fan, he's my favorite boxer, but he's nowhere near MJ level.

I guess the conclusion is there cannot be a universal "list" of the greatest athletes.
Lists like this are subjective, and not worth investing too much stock in.

No, he shouldn't. COVID-19 killed both the Grand Slam record argument and the weeks as #1 argument, as Nadal was likely to get the GS record and Djokovic the weeks as #1 record without COVID-19.

Right now, there is no logical argument to place Federer as the clear GOAT. 20 > 19 > 17 doesn't count because COVID-19 killed that argument.

Both Laver and Rosewall are greater than Emerson despite having won less Slam due to external factors. just like arguably both Nadal and Djokovic are greater than Federer despite having less Slams due to external factors.

I can name 10 footballers off the top of my head that are better than Gerrard who didn’t make that list.

Also, no Ronaldo (BOTH R9 and CR7).
