String for baseliner, flat hitter. MSV HEX or SPPP? What gauge?

Hello,

I am currently playing with MSV focus HEX 1.23mm in Babolat Pure Drive GT. I like the string, but since I do not hit with topspin, should I really be using HEX string? I hear those string are mostly used for spin but I am playing allmost all the time from the baseline and I am picking up balls when they are coming down(I think you can generate spin only if you hit the ball after it bounces and is coming up at you?). I just wait until they bounce and come down again and I hit some 30cm from the ground.. Just to explain my style.

I am thinking about trying Signum Pro Poly Plasma(SPPP). Would it be better for my style than MSV focus HEX?

Also what gauge should I use. I have never broken a string. Not even 1.18mm. Should I go as thin as possible? MSV Hex come in 1.10 mm. I am thinking more in 1.18 or 1.23 but since I never break them, maybe 1.10mm would be better for me?

thanks for help guys

Hi Tomaz,

I play with the 1.10 Hex and find it a really nice string for hitting flat or spin. Less power than a syn gut and more predictable in my experience.

Currently experimenting with low tensions (35lbs) right now and enjoying the response. Didn't like SPPP personally, just felt harsh with no feel.

I'll say this: I'm a big server who doesn't serve and volley and uses instead a heavy topspin FH and 1HBH. In addition to that, I happen to own reels of MSV Hex 1.10, as well as SPPP and SPPP HEXtreme. With that said, I obviously have extensive experience with the HEX and the MSV (I got the SPPP reel for free) having used both at one point as my go-to strings. It goes like this: MSV Hex is a good value string. The key word is its value, because it does not play that well, but does play well for its price. The SPPP HEX is more expensive, but has loads more feel. The HEX really doesn't generate that much spin when compared to the other textured or shaped spin strings out there, and since you don't take huge spinny cuts at the ball, the MSV just lost its major party piece. So, IMO, the Signum Pro is quite superior to the Focus Hex. That, plus the SPPP currently holds its tension better than any other string on the market (due to string forum reviews, not any actual scientific testing which isn't even important when deciding a string to buy since it might be theoretically brilliant but play like absolute garbage i.e. 80% of multifilaments on the market).

Thanks for help. I guess I will have to try SPPP and see for myself, although I allmost ordered a reel of 1.10mm HEX. It really is cheap and should last me for about 3 years.

Try Signum Pro Hyperion. Softer than SPPP and it's a round string which will work better for a flat hitter. Edged strings also saw into your crosses quicker than round ones.

MSV Hex, especially in its 1.10 gauge, simply eats through anything other than poly crosses.

I am very tempted to try MSV in 1.10 version, since I read so much good reviews about it and I like 1.23 version. Tough choice.

I wouldn't, Hex is at its peak at 1.18. It's very springy at 1.10 whereas the 1.18 has the same amount of power, but it actually helps you keep the shot under control instead of just launching it wildly.

But I see more people playing and liking 1.10 version. At least that is what the results from the poll someone posted says. I think about 70 % liked 1.10 mm, then 1.18 on the second place and almost none with 1.23 and 1.27. I only played with 1.23 and liked it so I guess 1.10 should be even better. I will probably order 12m of HEX 1.10 and 12m of SPPP in 1.18 and then decide. Then again should I order SPPP or SPP Hextreme :)))
