Stringing Natural Gut for the 1st time..

I ordered Klip Legend (17g) from TW. I am planning on putting the gut on the mains and Gosen sheep in the cross. 57 lbs. I use the AK90.

Any tips or advice? I am not new to stringing (probably strung 25 times with my Klippermate), but have never strung a natural gut string. Thanks.

I've strung Klip Legend on my Klippermate. Great fit, namewise! Honestly, it's no problem, the machine doesn't hurt it, clamps, etc., work fine. Just pay attention; don't let the string get snarly. Prestretching is a good idea, too, so that it will play equivalent to the synethetic tension you're used to.

Be sure to properly pad anything that comes into contact with the gut during prestretching. I have a solid pole that I use, which I wrap a towel around.

Make sure your grommets are in good shape. If there's a broken one with a sharp edge, it will snap gut. Also, don't clamp too tight.

I have been reading some older threads and many say NOT to pre-stretch. any reason why or why not??

I am a long time gut user. I prefer not to prestretch. I think it takes away from the gut's elasticity. One thing I like about gut is the consistent elasticity and resilience. It hits the same way until it breaks.

Some people do prestretch. It gives a stiffer stingbed. One way to prestretch is to wrap the string around a pole, go across the room, and gently pull both ends. Personally, I don't like to prestretch because prestretching is very arbitrary without an electronic stringer.

My suggestion would be not to prestretch. If you want a tighter stringbed, string in increments of 3 lbs. the next time until you find the tension you like.

I prestretch gut, but it is more out of habit. Many don't, just pick a method and stick to it.

Don't pull the crosses to fast, the string will kink.

Great advice on the knots, don't snug them only.

The first time I used Legend I love it for the first week. It lost a about 3-4 lbs of tension. Now I pre-stretch and it remains the same.
