Surely I am not the only federer fan who gave up on him in 2nd set

Ya I am sure plenty of you did same. I mean I was like postponing my 3D designs' corrections and updates just to watch fedoric semi final today (at a sleep time though, extending sleep draught further and further). At 5-7 with 3 break points wasted in coric service game, at start of 2nd set, after a break down; I just gave up on him and cursed myself for wasting time on grandperer. I closed the sonyliv tab on chrome on my laptop and continued with drawings. And for my surprise, just before 2-3 mins when I finally finished my work and just opened chrome again to check status of milos-juan match. And for my surprise, fed won...
Wow...
Checked match stats
Horrible service breaks from both sides, 9 games broken in total
Coric, in my opinion, scrumbbled under pressure..
Last 18 games surely were miracle. And now I curse myself for giving up on roger.
Well played Coric!!!

Federer on a very bad day. On the opposite hand Coric played very well, and targeted exclusively feds BH. When i mean exclusively i mean 70% of the shots were on the BH. At the end it was obvious the heaviest name MATTERS.

Ok, what's the problem? Fed is 36 and tired and Coric was freaking goating, it was insane level. And Fed still won.

I mean, Fed even in 2007 lost before clay season.

Fed at age 36 is nr.1, won 3 majors, gets one tight match and people are panicking? Can you guys get a grip? Fed can lose all matches this year and it would still be incredible year for his old age.

You just can’t count Federer out.

His desire to win and creative match savvy dug himself out of a tough opponent tonight, what the hell more could I have done, Coric will be thinking to himself.

To be fair the pressure got to Coric, but credit to Federer for making it so difficult.

Just go to the match thread where handwringerers had Federer losing that match about 2,500 different times throughout the match.

Was a grind and intense and stressful but for anyone actually watching the match it was never fully dire because both guys had a lot of struggles with the wind and holding serve.

I don't understand the desire. Even at this age and after winning most in history, he still plays like he is 21 and it's his first GS final, this is scary.

It's not even a slam or even a final. I guess by playing less he accepted that he has less chances to win, so all moments are more precious so he has to be 100%. Nadal is sort of like that. Maybe he learned something at Rafa academy, because Fed is not the same after he went there.

Yeah, I wonder how tired Fed will be, his season was really long and heavy already this year. Good news is that he only needs to be 100% for peak Djokovic, he can win vs Delpo even at 90%, that's some optimism.

halfway through that second set i was imagining federer thinking 'man enough already, this guy's playing out of his mind, my game's all over the place, done enough winning lately, i'm tired, looks like the streak is over.' but man he just ground his way through, pretty impressive.

delpo playing some rough looking tennis though. he's starting to unload on the backhand which is not great news for everybody else. also cranking up the mph on the serve more than he's done in a while. should be a good final...i could see fed taking the first L of the season honestly.

Nope. I have been confident from 4 days before the tournament began that Fed was taking it. I've watched all his practices except one and he's on the ball. Del Potro won't beat him tomorrow either, and after Pagoo, I am a perennial hand wringer. This tournament is in the bag for Roger 90%. Del Po is easily rattled, not awesome in practice and isn't dialed in. Del Po will have to bring his 2009 USO form to beat this Roger who has the crowd in his pocket and will be even more confident after the near-Coric upset.

great match today. Coric was lights out for most of the day but Federer found a way to win. not the cleanest match with the wind but incredible competition and drama.

Del Po is always tough but I think Roger is going to play a lot better. Also, wondering how Del Po will play if it's windy. Del Po's service toss is a rain maker and I see where he might struggle in the wind. Also, his FH is a bigger stroke and I see where he could struggle there in the wind too. I think Roger wins in straight sets - revenge for USOpen.

He's not "unloading" on the BH. He's hitting his backhand at WTA level unless he's slicing and Fed eats us slice like it's French Fries smothered in gravy (apologies to the Vegans out there). Del Po is incapable at this point of unloading on a topspin BH. It won't matter anyway since Fed is so stubborn he will hit 70% of his rally balls to Del Po's FH. But Del Po "unloading" on his BH? Please.

Coric was nowhere near GOATing and hardly near insane level. ---> crappy over-rating of fed 17-18/his opposition from you as usual.

Coric had 8 W to 15 UEs in the 1st set.
He had 6 W to 11 UEs in the 2nd set.

so totally 14 W to 26 UEs in the first 2 sets.

3rd set stats were probably even worse.

I do however agree on the last statement.

I think federer was playing with a few nerves. He took a while to adjust to corics level which is the best ive seen him play. Not saying it was goating but not as subpar. Im sure he knows this was the match to break his old start to year record and it was impacting, same as aus open this year, nerves creeping in because they are big matches still for him.

Sure he will go back to playing normal now that anything more is just a bonus.

Fed had a big advantage today in that he is a seasoned, battle-hardened veteran of the sport. He's been living on tour for twenty years and has completed around one and a half thousand matches at the highest level of the sport. He's played, fought, lost, and won against several of the greatest tennis players in history and in the end has come out on top of it all. He's been involved in the majority of the most important matches of the last two decades. He's seen and done everything there is to see and do. He has more matches and shots and serves in his legs and arms and mind than any of his opponents will ever have.

Coric, by comparison, is just starting out.
The vigour of youth is a real advantage - but when it gets close, when the pressure is on, when the chips are down, when it comes time to produce what it takes to win - it's not difficult to see who is favoured to win the next point.

That man might be 37, but Del Potro knows he will have to bring everything he has tomorrow anyway to even be in with a chance.

Class is permanent.

you have to admit that coric was playing like a baseline god, i think he is the closest thing to prime djokovic that fed has had to deal with since his comeback

Ok, this is called the competition effect. If both are at a high level, they make each other look worse, so they make more errors. This surface is slow as hell, so it's normal ratio for two guys playing at a high level.

They both had to go for the lines, that's why the errors.

Yeah, it was insane. I think Delpo will seem like a walk in the park in comparison. Also Chung was very tough too, Fed was tested, he is now prepared for the baseline and match ready for Delpo, the best preparation.

Yeah even Fed in 2006 wasn't as stubborn. Fed is like a Mule, he just won't move and give an inch. Finally he learned to win ugly.

That was a match, a real match.
In the past I’ve done the whole ‘oh **** on it, he’s gonna lose’, turned off the tv and went about my day dejected.
But that’s not being a real fan, that’s just being a ***** (no offense)
If you like/love a player then love ‘em, stay with them all the way, even when the wheels come off.

Agreed..but hope he does not do the same mistake as the US Open..for some reason he kept testing Delpo’s FH and got burned a lot...hope he takes a page out of Coric’s page today and targets delpo’s BH more...didn’t Coric go to Fed’s BH like 70% or something..

It was disappointing to see Fed lose the 3 BP in the 4th game of second set and yet another BP in the 6th game. Right then, I knew Coric will have a hard time serving out for the match. Turned out i didn't even had to wait that long as Fed broke in the 8th game and 10th game.

The loss in the very first game of 3rd set was shocking but i knew Fed will get the break back.

But at 3-3. Coric really played a beautiful game and Coric was returning Fed's first serves easily. Fed's spot serve was missing. When he lost I knew he had a mountain to climb. Coric fluffed the easy BH at Advantage to go 5-3. The kamakazi serve and volley attempt was all we had to see to know Fed is going to have this.

That being said, an uncharacterisitic loss is always good to keep the expectations in check. Fed doing all this , approaching 37, is beyond imagination and we fans are spoiled so much.

If Fed has to lose , I hope it is early in the tournament or to a big player in the F/SF.. A loss to Coric in SF would have been a tough pill to swallow.

It wasn't a mistake it was on purpose. He was playing Rafa and not Delpo. Fed desperately wanted to raise his game to face Rafa, didn't work, because injury destroyed his USO preparation.

He won't make the same mistake again. But Delpo is so good, he can beat Fed even in top form, so that is also a worry even if Fed brings his A game.
