I used to actually watch this show as a kid. I still remember Goku, Gohan and Frieza. Incidentally I stopped watching only because it stopped running on TV here. I recall enjoying the show very much. Very entertaining.

Another girl who loves Dragon Ball :love::love::love: especially knowing it's you makes it even better. ;)

I have got the whole series, every single episode downloaded all the way from Dragon Ball, through Dragon Ball Z and into Dragon Ball Super. I just went across to Tokyo last month to watch the new Dragon Ball Super Broly Movie. Best movie of them all.

(y) :D:D I don't recall much but I remember that the kid (Gohan is goku's son?) gains supreme power when he gets too angry and with that monkey tail of his (Saiyan?). If I can watch it sometime again I would.

Yes, Gohan is born with an innate inner power that gets awakened when someone he cares about is being hurt. If you back Gohan into a corner and he has no where to go but through you, he unleashes his power. This remained the case until he finally mastered it when he fought against Cell. Gohan's incredible rage was also what started the turn from bad guy into good guy for Piccolo, who was Goku's sworn enemy at the conclusion of the original Dragon Ball, and start of Dragon Ball Z. When he starts to train Gohan, he begins to form a bond, because Gohan is the first person who treated him like a friend and cared and respected him...the bond becomes so strong that Piccolo ends up giving his own life to save Gohan.

That is the Namek saga, when Goku is training in 100 times gravity, on his way to Namek. DBZ was at its peak that point from a storytelling perspective.

The anime doesn't always stay true to the original Manga, and what I mean by that is the fillers. There is a lot more in the anime than there is in the manga, and that is because during its original broadcast, sometimes the anime would need to wait for the Manga to catch up and tell them what was going to happen next. So there was a lot of filler content. Now I love the Funimation dub of the DBZ, but there is also a DBZ Kai version, which is more in line with the manga, with almost all the filler removed.

The classic example of filler is the Goku v Frieza fight, it goes on and on, because the Manga had not caught up.

OMG I remember the hour long episodes of just a portion of the fight! Now I know the reason...after all these years :D

Yep. When they started that fight, they didn't actually know how it was going to end. LOL :-D

Hi Hitman. Sorry for late replying. I just enjoy my weekend. It's a long story and I will post part 1 first, the second should be on here sooner or later :)

I first got to know Dragon Ball in the early 2000s. Though I didn’t care much for it, probably because I was a kid still. What really got me into Dragon Balls was quite special: it was not the manga, definitely not the anime; it was the games. Around 2002-2003, I unexpectedly ran into my brother and our neighbor playing Dragon Balls games on a PC (more precisely, it was Sega game - a type of game console connecting to the TV in the 1990s). Watching them play, I was immediately drawn into it: the fantastic actions and movements, the attacks and the colorful energy waves. After that I asked my brother to let me join in - I played against him and lost 9 out of 10 matches. Only later, when I was more grown up, with the help of Internet proliferation, did I find out the game was called Dragon Ball Z Buyuu Retsuden. My memory of the game was that it was hard to play: the movements required you to follow a complex, coordinated series of buttons pressing and not just a few clicks or just press a fixed buttons like games nowadays. I still remember to this day the strongest energy waves in the game that Goku has to perform is the Kamehameha where you have to press down, back, forward and then punch. Because I frequently played with my brother and our neighbor, I got to know all the characters and how they were related, without knowing much about the plot.

It was by accident that I came across a few Dragon Ball manga volumes in our house. I didn’t know how they ended up there - maybe my brother bought them or he borrowed them from someone else. I was curious enough to check them out. I still remember to this day, the first chapter I read was about Goku’s friend group, including Piccolo, Gohan, Krrilin, Tien, Yamcha and Chiaotzu fighting against Nappa and Vegeta to protect Earth. The first page I opened depicted the death of Tien Shinhan after he used up his last bits of energy to revenge for his best friend (Chiaotzu) - it was heartbreaking.

My favorite OST from that game.

You are bringing back so many memories. I grew up with Sega and all this stuff. :)

In regards to Goku's Kamehameha - I was in Hawaii, on my way to Pearl Harbor, and saw this sign only ten minutes away from there. Isn't this just epic...

Question - Where do you live?:unsure::unsure::unsure:

Answer - At the corner of Kamehameha Avenue :D:cool:

So your first experience reading the manga was the climactic battle during the Saiyan Saga, nice way of getting into it. And yes, there is a lot of emotional depth in the story, you really do care for all of the characters, because they are all on their own journey. Yes, it's Goku's story, but everyone plays a part.

If you ever get time, check this live action Dragon Ball movie out, from Korea. It is based on the first Dragon Ball Arc, the very beginning of Dragon Ball, when Goku is a boy and meets Bulma, who is hunting for the Dragon Balls. It follows the narrative of the first arc almost 100% with the exception of the end, in this Goku doesn't transform into the great ape, but it has a lot of martial arts in it.

It is in Korean, with no dub, but, if you know that particular saga well, then you know exactly what they are saying to each other and what is happening. They did a very good job with this, considering it came out in 1990 in Korea, around the time that Dragon Ball Z Namek saga had started to show on TV in Japan

I have seen it four times

Right a little history on Goku himself, he is loosely based on the main character of the TV show Monkey, and his name was Son Goku also. If watch this intro to it, you will see the resemblance to the original kid Goku, the desire to fight, living on a mountain and the flying nimbus cloud. Of course this came out when Kung Fu was massive in the 70s, but it lead to the creation of the Goku we all know and love only a few years later in 1984.

Because I was able to remember all the characters I could follow all the saga storylines without much difficulty. I started to really enjoy Dragon Ball. That’s why I was determined to buy the whole manga series shortly after (at the time the Internet was not as well developed, at least in my country. One could only read the mangas with physical copies and not online back then). Luckily enough, I was able to collect the whole series after only a few weeks. I truly treasured them, but unfortunately they were lost after my home was renovated. Perhaps they were discarded for recycling without me knowing.

A few years later, I was told by my cousin that Dragon Ball also had an anime version. He told me that Dragon ball anime has many sagas and side stories that were not included in the mangas (which was call fillers). If I’m a fan of Dragon Ball then I shouldn’t miss out on the anime. My cousin directed me to a forum where I could download various episodes (please note that back in the days there was barely any website where one could download animes, let alone streaming online). I could only download individual episodes via megaupload and mediafire links shared by other people. It took me almost a whole year to download the entire Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and a few other movies to my PC (at the speed of 2 or 3 episodes per day; internet speed was very slow in my country back then). Unfortunately, my PC was infected by some virus after and the entire memory was wiped out. But now, thanks to technological progress, improved internet access and modern anime download websites I’m finally able to have the entire anime collection ready to watch anytime on my PC.

For me, Vegeta is my favorite character. He originally was a prince, cold, aloof, cruel and would not shy away from any tactics to get what he wanted. Throughout the series, Vegeta along with Piccolo are two of the most well-developed characters IMO. Vegeta was alone, kept to himself, prideful but also extremely brave. I like Vegeta in contrast to Goku - a character who constructed to be so pure, so flawless that he was god-like, and unrealistic. I cried when I witnessed Vegeta sacrificing himself in hopes of taking down Majin Buu (Fat Buu), to save his family and Earth. What a relief that Akira decided to bring him back towards the end of Dragon Ball Z.

I’ve been with Dragon Ball for almost 15 years. I always look forward to collecting the series whenever the publisher in my country decided to republish the series. I have about 3 complete versions of Dragon Ball in my home. I was so happy in 2015 when Dragon Ball officially released a new series called Dragon Ball Super. From then until March 2018, I was always online at 9am on Sunday Japan time to watch the newly released episode, like a deeply ingrained habit. I looked forward to the full HD version of Dragon Ball Super Broly to enjoy it fully. If I’m lucky, when the movie is selected for screening in theaters in my country, I will gladly pay for the ticket without hesitation. I really hope Dragon Ball Super will have Season 2 so that the passion of a whole generation of fans, including me, could be fully met.

You are a true dragonballer! Thank you for sharing this. We both share a very strong love for Dragon Ball. And fully agree with you on Vegeta and Piccolo. Both gave their lives up for the ones they cared about, Piccolo saving Gohan during Nappa's attack. Their character arc is truly amazing to watch.

And I will say this, having seen Broly, it is by far the best movie in the series I have seen.

Dragon ball is inspired by Journey to the west – A very well known Chinese classical fantasy novel. Journey to the west is very popular in my country and I’ve also read it many times. I love watching the TV series. Son Goku’s character is based loosely on Sun Wukong – A monkey king and also the protagonist of Journey to the west.

As far as I know, at first Akira Toriyama just wanted a short story inspired by the novel. But the manga became so successful that Akira had to further develop its content. If memory serves me right, these are the points when Akira wanted to end the story but the fans pressured him to keep going:

1. Goku, Yamcha, Bulma, Paur and Oolong witnesses Pilaf call the Dragon for the first time at his castle.
2. Baba tournament, Goku revived Bora – father of Upa and also reunited with his Grandpa Gohan.
3. Goku defeats Piccolo Jr, married Chichi (the end of original Dragon Ball).
4. At the end of Saiyan saga, Krillin finished off Vegeta (Raditz and Vegeta were always convinced that saiyan are the strongest beings in the universe – at that time that was logical because Frieza still hadn’t existed).
5. Goku defeats Frieza, becomes a Super Saiyan and dies alongside the explosion of Namek
6. After the cell games. Akira wanted Goku to remain dead so that Gohan could finally become the main character. At first Goten was used to replace Goku. However, many fans of Dragon Ball opposed to this. So Akira had to bring back Goku, leading up to the birth of Buu’s Saga.
7. Finally after the end of Buu’s saga, Akira had to go on pause because he needed to get some rest LOL. Not until Dragon ball Super, around 2 decades later that Dragon Ball finally had a proper sequel (I didn’t count Dragon Ball GT because it’s not canon. Akira has basically no involvement in that).

Because Akira originally did not prepare a long story, or a long development of character like some of other mangaka, we encounter some illogical scenes like the very first time Goku uses power pole to take some criminals to the Moon (which was illogical since saiyans cannot survive in space). But I think that’s a minor mistake and can be overlooked. Also due to that reason that Akira seems to retcon some of the original Dragon Ball content but I think that makes sense. For Example: At first Goku was originally a human with some supernatural abilities (like his ability to turn into a great ape when looking at the moon, like a werewolf). And Piccolo was as Demon, Kami was a god, 2 completely opposite beings. Akira did not come up with the idea of aliens such as Goku being a saiyan, and Piccolo a namekian until the beginning of Dragon ball Z IMO. That’s why when King Piccolo gives birth to his offsprings like Cymbal, Tambourine and Drum they are just the mutated devils instead of namekians like the Piccolo JR we all know and loved (because at that time Piccolo was simply a demon, not some kind of extraterrestrial). However, Akira is very good at making the above become sensible. For example he gives Goku’s ability to turn into a great ape a saiyan heritage. And in Dragon Ball Super we encounter Ultra Instinct (A form which was mentioned briefly by Whis at the time of universe 6 saga IIRC).

But despite some flaws, Dragon ball is still one of the most succesful Mangas, and of course my most favorite. Many mangaka also cite Dragon ball as their main inspiration like One piece, Naruto,…

Nice thread, Hitman. Now I wish I watched a lot more. It just did not play on TV then! I might like the movie. If it plays here, I am going to watch it.

There are ways to watch online if you ever get a chance, lots of sites host Dragon Ball episodes.

But yeah, seriously, if you get a chance, go see Dragon Ball Super Broly. It is just amazing, I got quite emotional watching that, especially the first act. I am so glad that Broly is now canon, after Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, he became so popular, they made two more movies around him. Akira realized just how much the fans loved him, that he has now brought him into canon.

As well as Gogeta!!!!

Glad to know I can talk DragonBall with one of my favorite posters here.

@Sabrina - Just to add to that amazing post of yours. One of the reasons why Akira bought aliens into the series was because Goku had already become the strongest fighter on the planet, there was not much more he could do. Hence he looked towards space, and then centred the battles around aliens, and in the process revealed who Goku truly is, and why he is so strong...of course it was easy for him to do, since Goku's powers were considered mysterious up until that point.

Girls, check this fan made live action movie out - Light of Hope. It is the history of future trunks. This is so beautifully done, and is so true to the original version. If you haven't seen it, please do check it out if you get a free moment. It is all about the Androids, Android 17 and Android 18 causing devastation, with only Gohan and Trunks left. Compelling storytelling.

@Hitman: What about you? How did you get into Dragon Ball? (y)

Growing up I was fascinated with superhero mythology, I always drawn in by larger than life characters, especially characters that stood for something. Back in school my best friend introduced me to comics, the DC and Marvel comics. I would read his comics whenever I could, learning more and more about these amazing worlds. One day I was fully addicted, on the way home from school there was a comic book store, and I would go in there every day with my friend and we would read comics. The owner became a really good friend with us, and would let us read and just hangout and we would just talk superhero mythology. He one day introduced me to Manga which he has imported in from Japan on some licensing agreement. Now, I was already into anime, having watched Akira, Monster City, Wicked City, Cyber City Oedo, Ninja Scroll etc but never really read the actual Manga due to their being a lack of it around. I was a kid in school, so my world was quite limited.

However, the owner showed me Dragon Ball. I borrowed the Manga, and went through the volumes and was just enthralled by the animation, the vivid storytelling and the characters. I couldn't stop from turning the pages and reading and reading. I would always go ask when the next ones would be in, there was usually delay for some reason, but I read Son Goku's story as a kid, and just loved it. His playful innocence encased in a brutal power was a truly enchanting to see.

Then I found out about Dragon Ball being turned into an anime, and started to watch imported episodes which were not of good quality, but still good enough to enjoy. My whole family got into it, even my mum and dad. Even to this day my mother stills asks me - Are you still watching Buu? - In reference to the fat Buu, and I always smile and say yes.

Like Dragon Ball Super: Broly Budget % more detail Now I love the Funimation dub of the DBZ, but there is also a DBZ Kai version, which is more in line with the manga, with almost all the filler removed.

Have you seen Broly yet?

In regards to Kai, I still prefer the original funimation version.
