The Espy awards screwed over Fed Ex but was kind to Sharapova

I was looking at the Espy nominations for the best male athlete and was appalled by what I saw. So the nominees for the best male athletes are: Lance Armstrong, Peyton Manning, Bode Miller, Michael Phelps and Vijay Singh any one see one name missing that should defintely be on there ROGER FEDERER!!! Now that had me shocked but was even more shocking was I saw the nominees for the best female athlete and what do I see? Seimone Augustus, Natalie Coughlin, MARIA SHARAPOVA, and Annika Sorenstam. Any one see anything wrong with this picture? How the hell is Sharapova nominated for an Espy only winning 1 slam last year Wimbledon and Fed Ex winning 3 out of the 4 slams and also the year ending number 1 not end up being nominated at all!!!! I'm gonna guess that if Sharapova looked like a Mud Skipper she wouldn't be nominated. This is enough to make me not want to watch women's tennis again.

federer, and sharapova both belong in there. although lindsey was #1 for the year, maria won wimbledon and the yearend championships, 2 of the 5 biggest events in 2004. maria is also probably being credited for being just 16-17 years old during 2004. can't explain why federer ain't there. not american enough? and federer and maria are not in the same category.

I bet he doesnt even win best tennis player. Roddick will win it like last year, it is a celebrity/marketing award sort of thing, nothing more, nothing less.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Further more, how on God's green earth is Vijay Singh a better athlete than Federer
Especially considering Golf is more of a competitive recreation than a real sport. And Fed only won 3 of 4 majors in his sport last year. I doubt he'll lose much sleep over it.

But as Davey said this is more of a marketing thing. Maria probably does have better name/face recognition than Roger - and she's smoking hot - and thus a better ratings draw. I can't say that I've ever watched the Espy's and don't see that trend changing this year. Award shows are lame.

OMG, top tennis players are atheletes. Don't tell me Federer does not have world class fitness and athletic ability. He has more agility and eye-hand cordination than both Lance and Peyton combined.

Simple, because the espy's just suck. It's as simple as that. They don't really reward those with the most talent, they just give awards to the most marketable/popular ones. It's not too important though, since a grand slam is what really counts, not espy's. I still wish that Federer at least gets some recognition especially after his astounding performance last year.

I am sure Fed is all broken up over the snub at the ESPYs. It is a 2 bit award show that nobody cares about. I doubt that Fed has even ever heard of the ESPYs.

God, does it matter?

Award shows are PUBLICITY. Sharapova is PUBLICITY. Federer is NOT publicity, except to a minority.

He's not exactly an idol in America, last time I checked. And he's not exactly on the covers of tabloids or the "top 50 sexiest men" lists.

Sharapova, on the other hand, can actually be recognized.

Face it, it's not going to happen.

yeah he may not care, but federer still needs to be in their for what he has done.. he is popular enough to be in their,, what he did is better than lance, and manning,, dunno about the other 2, vijay singh did have an awsome season, and the other guy dunno who he is.

i think they are more liable to pick people who will actually attend the award show. federer probably wouldnt , sharapova might tho

Regardless of whether Federer was on the list, I'd vote for Michael Phelps. Of course, I do think Federer would place higher than Vijay. If it's all politics, Armstrong will probably win it though.

What has he done that is so great in the realm of tennis? He won 3 out of 4 grandslams. Impressive but there have been other who have done it and there have been others who have won all 4 grandslams. Lance did something that has never been done in his sport before by winning 6 Tour de Frances and Peyton broke the single season passing touchdown record which was a very old record.

Federer had a great season but did not break any records or do something that has never been done before in his sport. And no he is not popular in the USA. Outside of tennis very few people know who he is. Didn't you see that spot on television at the US Open last year with fed hanging around Manhattan. They were going up to random people and nobody knew who he was. I am sure if Lance or Peyton were walking around Manhattan at least 50% or more would recognize them.

This guy must have been in a coma for the last year and a half.

This is just a local sports award, it's hardly of any import in the rest of the world. Who outside the USA would know who Peyton Manning is, for example? I've never really heard of him, and couldn't even say what sport he plays.

So if Federer didn't get his due, what matters? He certainly gets plenty of other awards :)

Federer should try to be a bad ass guy for only the rest of this year, throw racquets everywhere, drop his slightly overweight girl friend and date a paris hilton or a britney spears, make guest appearances on the major talk shows. That should be more than enough for ESPN to have him the best athelete for the next ten years. :D
Come on he needs to show more emotions on the court like SAFIN!

Well, for us, Federer is already approaching legend status. However there are three strikes against him:
1] he's got the unmitigated gall to come from some other country,
2] he is a tennis player, and
3] he is not a beautiful young lady.

Tennis is the greatest sport of all, but let's face it, it is just a blip on the screen when it comes to major market sports here in the States.

Just wait. Next year, Federer will be on American Idol, singing some Whitney, wearin' a fur coat / micro-mini-skirt number with a thong. Then, he will be recognized.

The awards are so stupid, I dont know why any of you care. David Beckham won best soccer player, despite a really bad year, where he was focusing more on flirting with woman at bars, and dealing with his turbulent marriage, than playing great soccer; and others like Thierry Henry, Michael Own, Wayne Rooney, and tons of superior players that years were overlooked.

If you win an ESPY all it means is you probably are not the best at your best(few of the winners are), but are considered the most marketable by the common johnny-come-lately American.

Henin and Federer not winning the awards at mid 2004, and Roddick and Serena winning them instead were also a joke. At the point most of the voting was done, Henin and Federer both held 2 slams to only 1 for Serena and Roddick, had many more tournament wins, a winning head to head(slight in Henin's case)over that chief rival.
The fact Henin and Federer lost out to inferior players of mid 2003-mid 2004, the next best, not the best, that year of tennis, Serena Williams and Andy Roddick, proves the awards are a farce right there, and that nobody should care about them, except to see beautiful pop signers half naked and whatever else goes on there.

According to the EPSY website, the voting for each category is done by the the fans via the internet. So you if you want to blame somebody, blame those who voted. Actually the result is not surprising since ESPYs are American awards with the Americans voting. Sharipova, Lance and Peyton are all well known in America. JHH, Federer are poorly known by the average fan here.

*Shrug*- I still don't see what the big deal is about this award. Federer recently won the Laureus award so I am sure he is not to broken up over an award made via internet voting in America. I suppose if he lost an award to Roddick in Switzerland that would be something to get worked up over.

lets look on a bigger picture guys, there are a lot of atheletes that deserves sharapova's spot. i mean, what defines best athelete? did players go through sprints/jumps/weights to see whos the most atheletic? no... there are prolly over a lot more athelets in america that are neck to neck, i mean, there are at least 20 wellknown atheletic sports out there, so be happy one tennis player is mentioned. what would LeBron say if hes not on the list and there is 2 tennis players for men and women on the best athelete list?

i mean, just for football or basketball, there are at least a dozen better athletes than federer alone. but ESPY gotta be diverse. so u guys need to stop worshipping every tennis player out there, thinking tennis is such a godly sport, and stuff... put yourselves in other atheletes shoes.

What exactly makes one athlete better than the other?
More importantly how can you compare the athleticism of a tennis player to the athleticism of a basketball or football player.

Again, does it matter?

Award shows are publicity, money. Federer is NOT publicity, money. Sharapova IS publicity, money.

There are hundreds of excellent athletes. How do they go from there? Market appeal, popularity. Federer is far from either. And as other people have said, I don't think he cares in the least bit.
