The Tipping Point?

Day Tripper

Semi-Pro
This Australian Open has marked a real turning point in the attitude of the umpires and the crowd toward nadal. It seems the umpires have talked on some level and are no longer going to tolerate the excessive time wasting and admittedly less common in match coaching that nadal receives

Last nights match was also noteworthy for the fact that nadal was booed by the Australian crowd - a crowd that is usually amongst his most supportive.
Regardless of whether he was injured or not and if so how badly he was injured( that is another debate) he was booed because the crowd did not believe him - they felt he was cheating.

Choosing to take A MTO before your opponents serve is considered extremely bad sportsmanship. it was also interesting to see some nadal fans commenting on the match thread last night that they felt extremely uncomfortable with Nadals behvaiour given his play in the following set.

Let's hear it nadal fans did last nights match make you re-evealuate your thoughts on nadal as far as sportsmanship goes?

Do you think the umpires are going to be increasingly tough on him regarding his time wasting, on court coaching , strategic use of MTO'S etc?

Was this Aust open the tipping point for many in their view of nadal?

My personal answer is no.

If any Fed fans want to know how this unwavering support feels like, think of Federer v. Davydenko and a well-time washroom break.

Djokovic's MTO at the 2011 USO is another fine example.

These things happen, fans don't see these things the same way as non-fans and they definitely don't see them the same way as haters.

I think so,atleast I hope so. Nadal and his criminal uncle have been milking the underdog card for too long and got away with it for a long time but now tennis fans don't buy that garbage anymore. I hope this leads to more and more of his disgusting tactics getting exposed and put down mercilessly.

As usual another Naddy brings up Fed to dig a deeper hole.
If you thought for one second without your Nadturd hat on, you'll realise that Fed took that break at the beginning of the second set. What's he supposed to do, pee on the court? Need I remind you, Rafael took a bathroom break right before Fed was at MP in IW 12, what do you think of that? And let's face it, Davy lost once the sun went back down which helped Fed tremendously.

I agreed with much of the OP, however I dont think there will be some target on Nadal for been slow. It should be with every player. Nadal must also understand that he should follow the rules.

Now if he was indeed injured (which I think he was) then it is the sensible thing to allow for extra time. But I agree the timing of play when the injury happened was strange.

it was good to see nadal get pinged for time again but why wouldnt the umpire tell stan why nadal left the court?and good on stan for calling the ref..hopefully more players will do this.

I have to say yes. He'll do whatever he can get away with to win, but the look on his face when got booed was...priceless.

The closer he gets to the slam record the more he will be looked at under the microscope by both press and fans. The pressure will build. How he handles it will be interesting.

Agreed. There is a change in other players' behaviour as well. Roger complained to the umpire during the semi about Nada grunting too loud. Then during his post-semi press conference, he noted that in 33 matches with Nadal, the later got only 2 penalty points, which is clearly a joke given his time abuse.

Now today Stan the Man was mad about Carlos Ramos giving an OFF COURT MTO to Nadal IN THE MIDDLE OF A SET without even informing him why! During the whole MTO he had to chase Carlos Ramosto explain him what was going on! And Ramos refused to tell him why and Stan had to call the supervisor himself.

This is both really shocking and encouraging in the sense that top players begin to openly criticize Rafa scandalous behavior.

Also he plays better as a #2 than as a number #1. He has a history of this.

There can be an argument on this. Nadals core game is there from when his started. But Nadal have made adjustment to his play over time and adpat due to his wear and tear style of play and slower movement. We will have to see how consistent he is during 2014 and retaining his number 1 spot for the argument to stick. You could be right, lets wait till November.

The Federer reference was a call to compassion for Nadal, not to sh*t on Fed. I got my ******* (cowboy) hat on, too, no need to attack me, bud.

And the fact that you got defensive about my comment should prove my point, too, about the perspective of a fan vs. hater.

Agreed. But I think he thrives in the underdog role. He thrives when expectations are low. He thrives chasing the #1. But I dont think that is unique to him. Most players do. Serena and Fed are probably exceptions to this. The whole its easier to get to the top than stay at the top cliche is true of most players.

Yup when you are top dog and dominate as Nadal has been since really feb of last year wimby not included people gun for you. In all ways. What the players and press put up with when he was number 4 in the world does not fly now.

Clearly too complicated for the average forum joe.

LOL@defensive, you do realise you've reacted defensively to this thread right by bringing up Federer when it has nothing to do with Fed? A classic Nadtroll tactic? Plus if you hadn't skipped over my post which you clearly did, you would've noticed that I mentioned Ralph's IW 12 toilet break right before MP to give you some perspective about Fed's toilet break which , lets face it Nadal fans like to bring up everytime Nadal's called for his despicable acts.

Did you watch the whole match? The crowd only booed him when he came out from his medical timeout. As soon as everyone realized that he WAS NOT FAKING, he got immense support.

I skipped over those details for the sake of not adding to the madness and flaming overtaking these boards at the moment. I'm only trying to answer the OP's question about Nadal fan support.

I only brought up Fed and Djoker to show how much their fans support them even when others accuse them of ridiculous stuff. I think Nadal fans are quite similar, so it's a fair comparison.

So, yeah, I brought up Fed to back up Nadal. I like to compare Nadal to Federer because they're both great champs.

I thought you were supposed to take MTOs on changeovers. After watching the match again, or at least the part in question, it's obvious that he hurt himself during the first serve at 30-15. Before his second serve he said something to the umpire, presumably that he needed an MTO, and then played the rest of the game bending over, hurt, not really hitting the ball.

Actually, it was before the second set commenced, that is in the break after the first set. Completely legal , didn't stop play as it was during an already scheduled break. No different from sitting on court and changing the shirt during a set break.

But in the genius logic of Nadal fans, it is somehow illegal because Fed "admitted" to going to the bathroom to "let the sun go down" in one of those jokey interviews on court with Courier  Note that Fed also admitted to "stealing towels" in one of those Courier on court interviews. Takes someone really dense to pick on that.

This thread is spot on. It could even be the tipping point of Nadal's career, as explained by Peter Bodo in his article discussed in another thread. Not even mentioning the joke of his MTO for nothing, the fact Nadal couldn't break Stan at 5-3 0-40 in first set even on three second serves has been described by Bodo by the potential turning point in Nadal's career.
Don't think he will win anything significant from now on save for maybe one additional RG.

the authorities have had enough of nadals **** and so they should.it was the X man who said "why does he get 45 seconds and we get 25?"i love it.
