"A new ATP World No. 1 could be crowned following the Australian Open: Nadal would overtake Federer at No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings after the Australian Open if 1) Nadal wins the title and Federer loses before the semifinals or 2) Nadal reaches the final and Federer loses before the third round."

IS this calculation right??? I don't think so..
Fed is around 1400 points from Nadal...How can he lose the number 1 spot at the AO with the above conditions??

As you said the current point difference between Nadal and Fed is 1400 points:

1) Fed loses before SF -> -750 points ; Nadal wins Title -> +750 points (because he made QF last year) => 750+750 = 1500 > 1400 ==> Nadal NEW NO. 1

2) Nadal reaches Final -> +450 points ; Fed loses before 3d round -> -965 points => 450+965 = 1415 > 1400 ==> Nadal NEW NO. 1

ahh... are you sure? I though grandslams were 1000 points??? so if Fed loses before the Semifinals, he would NOT lose 750?

From ATP website:

Points W S QF
Grand Slam 1000 700 450 250 150 75 35 5 15

So in the first scenario, he would just lose 550 points while nadal will gain 550, or 1100 differencial, still less than 1400?
So not enough to get the ranking changed..

Yes. But your results get tallied from last year. So you make the Q last year and this year you win. Since the Q is worth 250 and winning is 1000, you only get the points you didn't earn last year.

if Fed loses before SF he WILL lose 750 points or more.

look my friend:

W 1000
F 700
SF 450
QF 250
R16 150
R32 75
R64 35
R128 5

Losing before SF means reaching QF or less. QF is 250 points. 1000 - 250 = 750

I agree. One problem. I am picking Nadal to lose to Moya in 4th round. Never know. Thats how I am calling it. If he beats Moya, he faces Roddick and ..... You fill the dots.

As a huge long-time Feds fan, I'm priming myself up for him losing the No 1 spot ... it has to happen sooner or later ... I've been expecting it for the past 6 months so I should be able to deal with it by now.... I hope!

So in other words, Federer will remain number one.

Really? I wouldn't think it's going to happen for a while. I would be suprised if he reliquished it this year. Nadal is getting less healthy while Fed is his same old self (minus a small stomach ailment). If anything I would expect Fed's lead to increase as I predict that Nadal will not be able to defend some of his hardcourt and Wimbledon points. Remember, Fed didn't go far at Indian Wells or Miami last year so he stands to gain good points at both those tourneys.

So does that mean winning two years in a row gives you no points, since you earned 1000 the previous year?

No. Federer will just maintain the status quo.

As it stands Federer has 7180pts. He'll lose 1000pts when the AO finishes, however, if he wins it he'll be back to where he was at the beginning at 7180pts.

When they made the ATP race a ridiculous mathematical equation putting more weight on "defending" points than on doing well, they robbed the #1 ranking of all meaning.

It's nice for Fed that he's been ranked #1 seemingly forever. Nice for Nadal as well that he's been ranked #2. But you don't need points tallied up and defended to know that. Federer has won, what, 9 of the last 12 or so slams? Of course he's the best player in the world. Nadal has won the rest of them? Of course he's second best.

Everything else is utterly meaningless, and no resultant outcome of this tournament will change that, irrespective of what the ATP's bogus formula spouts out. If ANYONE -- Nadal, Djokovic...hell, if Fabrice Effing Santoro -- other than Federer wins two out of the next three slams, it'll be obvious that that player is and deserves to be the new #1 in the world.

Otherwise, it's still Fed, no matter what the "points" (LOL) say.

History is always written the same way in tennis. The slams count. Nothing else -- not points, not "Masters Series" titles, not trying your hardest, not anything -- matters in the slightest when it comes to evaluating professional tennis players.

Right now, Federer owns tennis. Nadal makes his mark. A few other guys (Hewitt, Safin, Roddick, etc.) have minor historical significance. Everyone else might as well be working from a cubicle -- they're only out there earning a living; not a one of them matters to the game.
