Tomic to play US Open
23 August 2017, 07:28

Bernard Tomic is set to return to tennis at the US Open, ending an extended absence from the game that has seen the Australian's world ranking plummet to 146, local media reported.

The 24-year-old, once touted a future top 10 player, has not played since Wimbledon where he caused an uproar by declaring himself "bored" with the game after a listless first round defeat to Mischa Zverev.

He sparked further condemnation last month when he told Australian television that he was only in tennis for the money and had won plenty of it even without trying hard.

Tomic's manager told Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper that he would play in the grand slam at Flushing Meadows and had also entered tournaments in each of the last six weeks of the ATP season.

"He is playing the US Open," Tomic's manager Matthew Fawcett said.

"Following that he is planning to play Chengdu, Tokyo, Shanghai, Antwerp or Stockholm or Moscow, Vienna and Paris."

The US Open opens begins on August 28 in New York.

Tomic has withdrawn from his last four tournaments, pushing his ranking to depths that will require him to battle on lower-tier tours or beg for wildcards from tournament organisers next year.

His top 30 world ranking at the end of last year guarantees him slots at the ATP 500 tournaments in Tokyo and Vienna but he will need to boost his ranking to qualify for the ATP 1000 Masters series events in Shanghai and Paris in October.

Pundits see little chance of Tomic having the required fitness to win best-of-five set matches at the US Open and his childhood coach Neil Guiney told local media last week that he feared Tomic's career was finished.

Tennis Australia's high performance chief Wally Masur said last month he was worried the long-time Davis Cup player was "burnt out."

Tomic was ranked 17th in the world heading into the Australian Open last year but has not surpassed a quarterfinal on the tour this season and mostly crashed out in the first or second rounds of tournaments.

Reports of his party lifestyle in his Miami base abound in Australian media.

"Bernard is getting to that point where reality is really going to hit him," Australia's doubles great Todd Woodbridge told The Australian newspaper last week.

"He will find out pretty quickly whether he enjoys playing, whether he wants to play and whether tennis can give him a lifestyle he enjoys.

"Otherwise, it won’t be long before he discovers that what he has been doing is a wonderful opportunity that has gone begging."

F him. I was a fan initially in 2011-2012, but he's seriously gone off the rails. I think Nick is also heading down this path.

Entries are taken on ranking from 6 weeks before the tournament starts.

Ah okay. Thanks for that.

Edit: Can't be 6 weeks though or Murray would still be seeded #1 so maybe you meant 2 weeks?

He needs to make the last 16 just to stay in the top 100, which of course he's not going to do, so from here on out he'll be qualifying for slams until he gets his act together or retires.

Oh wow it's gone up didn't realize it. Just remember when they first announced increased prize money a few years ago it was 32k for first round, 64k for R2.

this year is the biggest increase in USO prize money ever, even for a r128 loser he can still make a balmy $50k and walk away with not doing jack

"He is playing the US Open," Tomic's manager Matthew Fawcett said.

Correction! This should read:

"Tomic is tanking the US open. Following that he is planning to tank at Chengdu, Tokyo, Shanghai, Antwerp or Stockholm or Moscow, Vienna and Paris."

And with his record he would do well teaming up with some Indian bookies at this stage of his career and making a bit more money out of his tanking, wink wink nudge nudge ;)

Why is USO taking the ranking of the players so early to make the cut?

That means that they do not take into consideration the results from the two biggest tournaments from their own series.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes. Has he been practicing a lot and with a decent draw could make a 3R or even 4R? Or is he just turning up for the prize money?

Most likely the latter but will be interesting to see.

How can he be burnt out, he has only played 24 matches this year - and a few of them were gimmies for his opponent?

He's been bagelled 2 times, bread-sticked 3 times, withdrawn during or defaulted a match twice and beaten one person inside the top 60 all year (30th ranked Mischa Zverev who was injured).

Bernie has dropped 51 places, from Number 95 to Number 146.
He is not going to make a living out of playing Challengers, certainly not the lifestyle he is used to, so needs some wins in these tourneys.
Otherwise, yes, he is a goner.

I'd never heard of this "if you end the year inside the top 30 then you get automatic entry into ATP500 tournaments for the entire next year.
So because Tomic finished the year ranked #26, he gets into ATP500 Japan Open and this is the entry list. Look at the rankings of them all and then Tomic..

I might be seeing it with fan-eyes, but I think Nick is coming around, actually getting help. I hope he does! Tomic seems way more troubled and just money-hungry, I think his case is worse than Kyrgio's, he's getting to competitive rounds and seems to be really pumped up when playing agaist the best.

It's 6 weeks (from memory) for entry, with seedings determined at the time of the draw.

So, the 6 weeks just determines the entry list, then the Tournament decides the seeding?

Back to Tomic, I dont know how much dough he's REALLY got in his bank account (he can say whatever he wants, doesnt mean its real), but $50,000 for a touring pro, who is getting less and less support each day, don't fly so high.

Yes, if he quits 2-3 years from now (or in three weeks!) he's surely got plenty of cash stashed up, but I'm pretty sure he's not SETTLED for life, at least for the lifestyle he tries and showcase. He wouldnt be the first sportsman to blow up their fortune in a decade or two.

He's completely free to do whatever he wants with his life, if he wants to be on tour half-assed and win a couple of rounds on every tournament to make some decent money, do it. And if he wants to TALK about it on and on and on, do it, dont expect many fans out there with you and what Im sure about is that every lower ranked player out there who comes up agaist Tomic in EVERY tournament are gonna go out there and play harder than ever against him. Who would want to loose to a guy who says he's playing half-assed and thats good enough for him?

Maybe if he somehow manages to win his match (es) in straights. Considering his glaring lack of fitness and stamina, I cant see him winning a match that goes to distance..

Hope he retires, he is taking a spot from someone who cares. Selfish attitude, expected

Doesn't everyone think it's hilarious that Tomic is supposedly "burned out?" Burned out from what!? He's played about 10 matches all year!

Burned out from having to give all those interviews trying to explain why he is burned out?

Tomic will be back in the top 50 in no time

He's proven time and again he can get to that level and stay there by doing just slightly above the bare minimum
