in my opinion tommy haas comeback is one of the better stories of this year in tennis. what i really like is the what he did while he was away from tennis for 15 months. i saw the open access show on tennis channel on tommy haas. i think that all of us can learn from his experience and that by doing other sports such as triatholon training, basketball, and yoga in addition to the countless hours of traditional rehab he made himself into a better athlete. i saw his coach red on a interview say that most tennis players will not think out of there sport and that tommy is an example we can all use to improve and become better at what ever level we play... i agree and am happy for tommy good luck next year thanks

Indeed, great recovery story for Tommy and his family.

Haas was a training partner for Becker in the 90s, including under Nick B. What you described is the way Boris trained, surrounded by best coaches in many disciplines including Daley Thompson, the double Olympic champion in decathlon. Tommy learned a lot in those years, and the most important was establishing high standards for himself. A part of that is described in NB's "My Aces, My Faults. "

well actually to set the record straight tommy haas career high was 2 not 3 he only started playing in february and now he is ranked 17 this week in my humble opinion that is a great comeback. in today game of mens tennis there are few players that can break the top 20 much less do it 2 times in a career and not have the full year missing the first slam in australia go tommy

To not play a single competitive point from the begining of November 2002, until the middle of February, 2004.....and be ranked in the top 20 at the end of the year, winning 2 titles and a QF finish at the US Open, is an amazing accomplishment.

Also don't forget Canas, he came back from an injury timeout that was almost as long, and he's up to #11. And has an awesome record starting with this summer, including 3 tournament wins and a final and a TMS semi. I say Canas and Haas are the two main comeback-player-of-the-year candidates. Safin... he was more mental than anything. He was clearly back in top physical shape from the very start of the year (Oz open final) but just mentally didn't get it in order. Though he should be considered, I think Haas and Canas would be better choices.

That would be more than a comeback, since he's never even got to a semi before, right?

Haas has done very well this year, but he's going to find it tough to get up to his previous ranking. Safin has a better chance of doing that, imo, but it depends on how consistent he is. Canas, however, I can see going above his previous best, and getting into the top 10.

canas was about 240 last december last year at about this time safin was playing atp tourney at this time haas was not ranked on the computer last december haas first match victory was in palm springs which was in march so from march till now to be at 17 in the ranking is remarkable that is comeback player of the year haas

Canas finished last year at 272 with 124 entry points. The difference between that and not being ranked at all, for a top pro who could easily earn that amount in a single tournament, is not that much. They both benefitted from injury ranking and wildcards, Haas to more of an extent I believe. I know Haas was probably off for longer, but I don't think Canas' comeback is any less impressive.

No way in hell do I see Canas getting into the top 10, top 20 again maybe. As for Tommy winning a slam next year, or probably ever, no way. I actually like him, he seems like quite a nice kid and he works hard. However he just doesnt have the exceptional weapon(s) to win a grand slam.

davey, Canas is 11 at the moment, and he's alternate in Houston. He could be in the top 10 after the TMC.

Thomas Johansson also had an impressive year. He missed all of '03 & is currently #30.
Comeback player of the year will be a tough decision w/4 very deserving candidates.

I really think a lot of Tommy Haas. The last time a player had to take this much time off, I believe it was Thomas Muster. Haas has got one of the prettier games on tour and IMO he is definetly one of the best tacticians on tour. I'm glad to see him regain top 20 status. I doubt very seriously that he'll a) regain #2 in the world, or b) win a Grand Slam though. What he will do is ruin a lot of draws for seeded players.

I dont think it is a tough choice. Haas, Canas, and Johansson have all had excellent comebacks but none compare to Safins. He dropped out of the top 100 and has regained top 4 in the world with a slam final and two Masters titles. It should be Safin hands down. As for it being more mental than anything, that still is his game declining to a low point and reviving. Would giving Agassi comeback player the year he won it be ridiculous on the same basis. His decline was more mental than anything too. Anyway Safin was very injured last year, it wasnt just mental by any means.

I saw Haas beat Grojean in a thrilling match from a great seat at the U.S. Open a couple of months ago. Tommy is a fantastic tennis player who has all the strokes and great wheels and endurance. His serve is not very powerful, probably due to the shoulder problems. He really should come in more; he has a nice volley, but mostly plays from the baseline. One thing he is not is underrated. I had to hold back when he was suggested as such on another thread recently. I think most avid fans now how good he is. Grosjean is underrated relative to Haas. That day, he had a bigger forehand, a bigger serve, and equal or better speed. Haas beat him with better endurance and more creative shot-making.
