'The last match that I won on tour will be against Roger Federer, so I’ll take that any day,' Haas said, referring to the win over the Swiss in Stuttgart in June 2017, in which he saved match points.

Not a bad way to go out! Congrats to Tommy on an unbelievable, legendary, hall of fame career!

He needs to continue to be involved in tennis things

There must be some kind of international reaching position at the ATP

Tommy is the tournament director of Indian Wells which is a very prestigious position to have these days! I'm sure he enjoys it when Roger comes down to LA area every March and their families get to hang out together for weeks.

I'll always remember his match with Federer at the 2006 AO. Scratch that! I got the match wrong. It's the 2012 Halle final which Haas won (I originally said he won the 2017 Stuttgart final LOL).

Nonetheless beating Federer is a great way for him to end his career. :p

Everyone will remember Tommy Haas for 1 thing:

2009 RG R16, he had Roger on the ropes big time. For one moment, it looked like Roger's career slam was never going to happen!

Considering all the top players in the WORLD come to play IW, how is that not INTERNATIONAL? Oh I get it, it has to be in the EU right?

Because working at one site in one country is not international

Thats like saying working at a McDonalds is international because a customer can be from another country

I think he won the first set winning like one return point. It was ridiculous.

Anyway, he had a great run. I loved watching him. Pretty oldschool player, but really all court, really fluid, loved it

No, it's just being tournament director of the sixth most important and prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Only the slams and YEC are more valued, so you bet this is an international tennis position. Ellison has clearly pulled away from any other Masters 1000 events.

Apparently there are certain people who hate the American west coast for some reason.

Sad to hear this - was hoping to see him give it one last shot and see his beautiful technique in a few more tournaments. Given his many injuries and recent long break it's comes as no surprise though.

Would Tommy have won the tournament otherwise? Tennis wise I’d say so, however the mental component was always a big factor with him, so still maybe not.

Enjoyed Tommy's matches with Roger, had a nice OHBH but was plagued by injuries and never really had the mindset to be champion. Still, a very good career.

Some personal reminiscences of Tommy:

He played Federer just twice at the Australian Open. Both matches went to 5. Haas was beloved in Australia and the crowd atmosphere at both matches was electric.

Haas was a notorious over-trainer, both in the calisthenics room and also on the court. He brutalised his body. It contributed to his injuries but also gave him confidence in matches that he would be able to go to physical zones that his opponent couldn't.

The stroke mechanics of his OHBH were near perfect and very rarely broke down regardless of conditions or opponent.

Sad that we won't see him on court now but it's great to see him have a role of international importance still in tennis as the replacement TD at Indian Wells.

Replacing the hoary old bigot Ray "Rudy" Moore with the universally loved Tommy Haas was a masterstroke by Larry Ellison.

Off-topic, but the Hall of Fame situation is going to be tricky here..... on the letter of the law he shouldn't be going in. And recently they have hinted that the entry requirements have been raised even higher. But this year's entrants seem to suggest that there is some wriggle room and even players without glittering singles tournament hauls might still be able to get in.

Wouldn't it have been great if Tommy had won his one slam then/ I bet he turns that match over and over again in his head.

Tbh, I thought he had retired. Didn't play since Stuttgart beating Fed. What a way to go out though.
Lovely and beautiful player, tennis is poorer without him

Make your mind up. You didn't think the tour was poorer when you thought he had retired but you say tennis would be poorer without him.

rich getting a lol like that from the mother of all lols .
Where did I say tennis hasn't been poorer since last year's grass season? Haas was a tremendous gift to the game, but obviously he didn't play a massive role in the past couple of years. Him almost getting to top-10 in 2013-2014 was a great story for tennis

Best wishes in retirement to the man with the second longest slam career of any male player in the Open Era (20 years, 11 months from 1996 US - 2017 Wimbledon).

You cannot be serious! Great looking game, but too many injuries, and few important accomplishments. Much overrated, overall.
