Because i thought eveyone here is a really big tennis-nut. And all the tennis nuts I know dont know craaaaap about music. Really! I'm not joking! It's because their only interest, knowledge and focus seems to be tennis. But yea. There's only casual tennis nuts on this forum it appears.

But yea. Dont get me wrong.

Peace. God Bless.

They're all heavy metal in my book, especially compared to Jackson Browne and Elton John. ;)

speaking of Elton John, one of my all-time favorite albums is "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." I like nearly all the songs from that two disc album, even the ones that didn't get play on the radio.

I'm a moderate tennis nut, but still...music isn't one of my huge interests, so by looking at my CD collection behind my back I pick

What's the story (morning glory)- Oasis
The miseducation of Lauryn Hill- Lauryn Hill
Oral fixation vol.2- Shakira (I don't want any laughs now :))

and 2 Cro ones... Buđenje- Parni Valjak and 14- Songkillers

Pearl Jam- Ten
Nirvana- Nevermind
Led Zep- IV
U2- Joshua Tree
Beatles- Sgt. Pepper

lists are always tough as something always gets overlooked as I really would like to get some Floyd in there but I cant justify overlooking any of the other albums...

Clash--London Calling
R.E.M.--Life's Rich Pageant
Nirvana--In Utero
Old 97s--Too Far to Care
Ida--Will You Find Me?

Though I'm sure if I thought about it for another 90 seconds or so, my list would change. 5 is so few!

Speaking of Dedans Penthouse, here's an odd moment:

Easter Sunday morning, April 8. American Airlines terminal, LGA, waiting to board a flight to Miami. I see a man of a certain age and a certain style with a carry on bag with a tennis racket or two with him. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, I say to myself: "I wonder if that is Dedans Penthouse from Talk Tennis."

Was it?

Mick, I agree. When I listed "Caribou", I was torn between it and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", but I didn't want to list two albums by Elton John. I also love just about all the songs on "GYBR", especially "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Grey Seal", and "Harmony", but I also love the songs "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Ticking" and "Pinky" from the "Caribou" album. :D

Interesting that you picked Caribou. I agree that Ticking is a great tune! there is a youtube of him doing it solo in 2003. However, I would argue that Tumbleweed Connection is his true MASTERPIECE.

1. The Who-Who's Next

I would have to say that this is the best album of all time because each song is top notch, the album as a whole displays a wide range of emotions, it flows beautifully, and it really marks a turning point in both the Who's music, and music in general. Pete Townshend put so much into this album that he had a nervous breakdown during its composition. The extreme highs and lows are all there for everyone to hear.

I don't think that I could list the other 4 without breaking it down into subgenre's or time periods because there are too many awesome albums out there and it wouldn't feel right to put a simple Punk album, for example, in the same league as Who's Next.

Hit Junior high in the early 90's...Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Rage, Smashing Pumpkins, all came around at the perfect time for me...

Interesting to see Unforgettable Fire chosen as U2's best...

Interesting to see Unforgettable Fire chosen as U2's best...

Amongst U2 fans, there are generally two groups: those who caught on at The Joshua Tree and those who were fans before then. Typically, the latter feel the music before Joshua Tree was less "produced" and far more visceral. Joshua Tree was a huge commercial success; most of its songs received radio play, but some of us Early U2 fans thought it was a sellout. In any event, U2's musical style turned acutely after that (to the "Zoo/Disco" phase).

Most mainstream music critics think Joshua Tree, or perhaps Achtung Baby, is U2's finest work. Most popular, sure. I just like the atmospheric sound (recorded in an old castle) and songs on Unforgettable Fire.

Yeah, it's a bit like your REM demographic. Apparently all IRS-era fans love tennis, since everybody's picking Life's Rich Pageant as their favorite REM album. Achtung Baby drew a pretty divisive response too. People who got into U2 through that album were more receptive toward Zooropa and Discotheque than the older U2 fans.

My suprise was more centered on the selection of Unforgettable Fire as U2's finest album. While I agree it was an amazing album it was, in my estimation, weaker then War, Rattle & Hum, October and Joshua Tree but more polished then Boy (you can't really count Under a Blood Red Sky, though it probably is my most played U2 album). Acthung Baby had a few classics on it but marked the end of U2 in my mind as Zooropa, Pop, All that you cant Leave behind and How to Dismantle an atomic bomb were all shaky albums that held nothing more then a radio friendly track or two...not worthy of what U2 previously was...

My judgement re. The Unforgettable Fire is also bolstered by a certain level of nostalgia, as it was the first U2 album I bought as a lad in high school, when it first came out. I won't argue that it's superior to any of the others; just that it's my favorite U2 album.

It's not a consistent record and Bono's kinda grabbing at straws in places (hello Elvis in America!), but Unforgettable Fire is probably their most timeless sounding piece. Atmospheric, elliptical, impressionistic. It's also when Edge got the "Frippscape" treatment from Eno, and that U2 became U2. Eno's ambient productions in general and his colloborations with artists in the 80s have held up pretty well through the years. UF plays better for it.

More Honorable Mentions:

Parklife by Blur
Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet
Interstate 8 EP by Modest Mouse
Hello Hawk by Superchunk

The Arcade Fire...anybody?

I'll be honest -- I feel toward Arcade Fire what I felt about Sigur Ros and Bloc Party. Debut album made me go into "greatest band evar!" mode; by the time the follow up albums came out, the emo and bombast got a little grating. Yeah, I know, this coming from a diehard U2 fan. ;)

Also I kinda resent the Talking Head comparisons with especially AF; Byrne was funny and the Talking Heads could play that funky music. Arcade Fire kind of remind me of Echo and the Bunnymen without the irony or Will Sergeant or Ian wailing like a drunk poet/yodeler.

Bottle Rocket

Hall of Fame
It seems like I am in the minority then, because I feel like Arcade Fire's album Neon Bible is better than their first album, The Funeral. If you ask me, both are amazing.

I gave a copy to a friend (in his late 30's) and the first thing he said when he listened was that they sound like Echo and the Bunnymen ... I guess I am too young to come up with a comparison like that.

Bloc Party doesn't really appeal to me, even their older stuff.
