Tracy Austin "outed" Jim Courier...

During the Safin-Robredo match tonight, Johnny Mac was making a comment about Safin's haircut. Then Johnny Mac asked Tracy what she thought of the haircut. All of a sudden, Jim Courier said "yummy". Tracy then said to Courier that's what HE think of Safin and that she would rather speak for herself and say that she likes the longer hair better. It was an entertaining exchange.

What was the score...????

I didn't hear her say that's what he thinks of Safin, but that she'd rather speak for herself.

I'm amazed how these commentators have turned a tennis match into an on air talk show. Can we please just watch tennis and listen to the movement on the court. JMac is more subdued in Wimbledon relatively to his US Open coverage -- what happened? Why do we Americans tolerate this drivel -- how many times must we hear about "these new strings"?

I love the drivel. I remember the Bud Collins days.

When they hire you to be a commentator, They want talk...not a lot of silence.

They can get silence out of an idiot.

Oh she definitely said that.

"Johnny Mac: I see Safin's got a new haircut. I wonder... should we get Tracy in here and see what she thinks of it

Courier: I'll tell you what she thinks of it: YUMMY! (lol)

Tracy Austin: That's what YOU think of it, let me speak for myself; I prefer the old haircut.

Awkward silence..."

It was TOO FUNNY!!!

Entirely too much drivel commentary on last night.

Mac and company were just yammering on about vapid, non-tennis things.

I think some USA Net exec mistakenly told Mac he was "clever" or witty.

I've also noticed an uncomfortable admiration everytime he speaks about Nadal. Has anybody else noticed this?

They both are annoying. THe US Open usually has the most annoying commentators.

Sadly it is true - I turn the volume down most of the time ... only time I got to hear good announcing was when I listened to Wimby on the radio and watched it on tv ... timing was off a little, but much better commentary about the *actual game going on at the time* (not months or years ago, and all that other drivel)!

At the US Open I really miss hearing the crowd cheer and the noise of the ball. Even during the Nadal game today announcing was dreadful.

One would think in this day and age that we could pay to get quality live streaming as it happens with the commentary from the country it is being play in.

If enough people wrote to the sponsors about the horrible commentary, maybe we might see some changes.

I thought it was really funny when Federers Agent was listening to the broadcast and JMac said he's in a slump due to Fed's Agent and they had his reaction live on TV

Yes, all of them should be kicked! Simply - the good commentator is "invisible", not like all this selfpromoted idiots. Be a good player doesn't mean, he'll be a good commentator. Get mad, when Mac was showing his pizza yesterday a his crapy talk.

Johnny Mac and Ted Robinson were rather loopy last night, having a good time in the booth while Roddick and Gulbis were beating the crap out of one another. This is the appeal of night time New York matches, the atmosphere is electric with the crowds getting nutty, the commentators order in pizza and act like they're on college radio...personally I find it all hilarious and fun to listen to.

It's bad enough tennis has a reputation for being stuffy and elitist, we don't need to listen to stuffy elitist commentators.

But some times it gets tiring. Today it was 4-4 deuce in 1st set Rafa vs troicki, and JMac, Carillo, and Enberg just kept going on about how big it was for Sam Querrey to finally make a GASP- Round of 16 at a major. At a certain point you got to get back to the action on the court.

I think they should put J. McEnroe and Tracy Austin in the commentary booth together more often, but I guess JMac does mainly men's matches and Tracy does the women's. Tracy is annoying to me; JMac can be annoying too.

I think it has a lot to do with this being the last year they would be covering USO together on the USA Network. They were hamming it up.

I was shocked on CBS today when out of nowhere during a match, JMAC asked something like "so what do you think about McCain's VP pick?" and you could probably hear a pin drop in that CBS booth LOL ... since neither Carillo or Enberg responded, JMAC answered his own question hoping to get a laugh out of it.

I am always a little grossed out by the male crushes the commentators have for a chosen few players. I could care less what their sexual preferences are, I don't want to hear some seniour fart claiming that Nadal is a sex symbol and gushing over his guns. Just the facts please!

I thought Jimmy was openly gay.

Openly gay? I thought he had a wife....

It could be because Tracey has a crush on Safin. During the ceremony of champions, Tracey stopped Safin and asked why he didn't kiss her. After the ceremony, back in commentator mode, her partner teased her about it and Tracey giddily described getting kissed by Marat not once but TWICE!!!

To all the people that want quiet commentators that don't talk or banter at all in between points.
Stick to hugging your mute buttons, or shut up and quit complaining and you can all go to the 18th century.
Nothing angers or bores me more than stuffy old commentators who don't want to talk about anything other than what's going on court and then repeat a bunch of lines out of a handbook that can be used in almost any tennis match related situation.
I like hearing personal stuff about the behind the scenes life of tennis players and anything else for that matter.
It's good entertainment all around, since tennis seems to be getting a little boring these days... Or is it just me?
I'd rather do something else than listen to uninteresting commentators. Must be a symptom caused by watching Top Gear.
People, you have been told.

I suspect the announcers are encouraged to deviate from tennis. One has to when an event is broadcast about 12 hours a day for two weeks.

Seriously, if there was some **intelligent** *interesting* commentary on the actual game that was going on I wouldn't mind some informative (non gossipy) comments on the players on the change overs. There certainly is a world of information about modern tennis and game strategy that rarely gets commented upon. Many (not all) of the posts here on TW are far more interesting and intelligently written than what I hear on US television from commentators who have actually played the game. Would never know it from most of what I hear.

Here's what some of you are missing....

There are a lot of Non-tennis people tuning into the US Open. They don't play, never have played, never will play. They don't know what topspin is. They barely know what Ad means. So, as an announcer and as a network, you can't just ignore half of your audience. They WANT to hear the tidbits about fashion, celebrities, etcetera, Plus the normal tennis talk that we, hardcore tennis players, hear every day.

So, When I hear that Serbian swimming pool story for the upteenth time, I know it's not for me, It's for the other half of the audience who've never heard it.

It's too bad you don't get the Tennis Channel, Fay. You should hear Jason Goodall, Robbie Koenig, and Doug Adler. They're all excellent!

It's about time somebody outed Jim Courier for the closet case that he is, and it explains his obvious dislike for the women's tour. :?
BS.

Being gay does not equal hating or devaluing women. I have preferred watching women's tennis over men's tennis for a long time, although not anymore because women's tennis isn't what it used to be. And, as for devaluing women, you'll find that gay men tend to have more female friends than heterosexual men do (although I'm an exception to that rule).
