I've created this thread for us two-hand backhand users. Here we can provide feedback and opinions on issues that pertain to our proud stroke.

Questions I have to start this off:
Best oversized and mid-plus racquets for the 2HBH
Should backhand be right-hand or left-hand dominant?
How often do you use a 1HBH slice?
Do you tend to stay at the baseline or come to the net when possible?
Preferred backhand gripping.. L/R hand combo (semi-conti, east-east, east-conti, etc.)

Feel free to join in, my fellow 2HBH friends!

I am a single-handed BH. My daughter has a super 2-handed BH. I am a coach, so I am entitled to join your club.

I think mid-plus is just fine; or maybe you try 100 sq. inches head.

There should be 50-50 partnership right and left hand. You may want to hit some balls via a lefty forehand to make your left arm stronger/playable. My daughter can hit a forehand with her left hand also. She is right-handed!

I think 1-handed BH slice is very important with 2-handed BH. My daughter is getting comfortable with her 1-handed slice BH, because this will result in 1-handed BH volley also. I feel volleying with 2 hands is not good because it limits reach and follow-through.

If the double-handed BH grip player, is given another tool -- i.e. slice BH; he/she may then come in on a short ball.

Grips: Right hand continental; left hand eastern FH.

It is also possible that the right hand could be in an Eastern BH grip, and left hand in an Eastern FH grip or semi-western FH grip.

Thank you.

Happy Holidays to all.

Happy Christmas to all.

Merry Christmas to all.

Looks like I am still No. 2 in this elite club!

Drill:

Have a partner feed you balls from a basket (200 balls in a basket):

-- Hit six balls with 1-handed slice BH (righty's slice)

-- Hit six balls with lefty forehand. I means you hit forehands with your LH.

-- Hit six balls with your normal 2-handed BH

And repeat the above till all 200 balls are hit this way.

You may do this drill 2-3 times a week.

This formula will improve your 1-handed slice, and also improve your 2-handed BH.

I can join this club!

I do not yet have a 1HBH slice. Just can't do it yet, keep popping it up. I do volley with one hand, however. The weakest volleyers on my team by far are those who volley with two hands.

Here's a question. When I'm stretched wide, I will sometimes switch the racket to my LH and try to lob it back. Pro absolutely hates this and says it is a terrible habit. He says it makes me lazy, I could have reached the ball with a 1HBH, that it is going to yield nothing but a bad shot. He says that if the pros don't do it (with the exception of Sharapova), why would I think I can do this effectively?

Does anyone else do this?

THBHer right here...

Midplus racket (RDS001)
I try to use my left hand more on my stroke, actually i hit lefthander forehands against the wall as a training.
I use the slice on return of first serves, parallel aproachs, to bring people to the net or defensive shots both parallel and crosscourt.
I love to go to the net.
grip: R:continental, L:eastern and semiwestern.

I want to add that i try to use to types of strokes, a very short almost pushy not so much topspin one when im inside the court, and a more fluid long tons of topspin from the baseline, also i can creat very nice angles and i use a very passive agresive shot when im being attacked on my BH side, i make a smooth stroke with not so much headspeed, focusing on making great contact and completing the stroke over my shoulder, the result is an effortless flat misil usually crosscourt, i have found this a very safety emergency shot if you have the right timing.

i should start a club called The Forehand Club.

"Hey do you have a forehand?"
"Me too!!"
"We have so much in common!"

hahaha. okay i'm just messing. i'd love to join this club but i can't hit a 2-handed or 1-handed backhand to save my life.

In my opinion, if you have a LH-dominant 2HBH you should have a steady wrist on the left hand and a right wrist that helps elevate and control the racquet.

Otherwise, you do not want to get wristy with the backhand. It takes away power, control, and you open yourself up for wrist problems just like Clijsters and Venus had.

For the slice, I had this problem for a while. Too much underspin. You don't want to hit a slice when the ball is real low. You'll want to make contact with the ball between the rib cage and your waist. The slice motion is a steady high-to-low and then you extend your arm out after contact. It's a finesse shot, so no need to hit hard at it. Watch Youtube videos of Federer and Henin doing the slice.

The only time I ever use a left hand is when someone hits a ball that goes past the side of my body while I'm at the net. There's no way I can do a 2HBH or a 1HBH in this situation, but the ball is not traveling fast so I can make a play on it with a LHFH.

This is a forum for 2HBH to discuss issues, trends, and advice on stuff to improve the 2HBH. Too often 1HBH fanatics (i.e. Rickson) insist on 2HBH users to switch to 1HBH. I almost quit tennis because I couldn't hit a 1HBH but when I tried a 2HBH it felt very natural. And it's been my best stroke for 12 years.

And the 2HBH worked for many pros including Agassi, Courier, Chang, Wilander, Borg, Nadal, Williams sisters, Sharapova, Seles, Evert, Connors, Hingis, Klijsters. Besides that, the 2HBH can be gripped in many different combinations and is the easier backhand to be aggressive with.

Yes, my daughter does it since she is a fan of Sharapova. She hits a decent forehand with her left hand. She has excellent double handed BH.

Am I in?

I started out playing with a 1 HBH, when I was 11 changed to a 2 HBH, uses the backhand slice very often, which is very effective.

The only problem, I have with my backhand is that sometimes, I choke on the racket more with my left hand, and the shot lands really sits up short. What I have been doing for the past 2 years is adding more spin to my backhand, and setting up to finish points at the net or with my forehand.

Currently play with the MicrGel Extreme Pro.

2HBH here...left hand dominant.

I can slice with one hand, and it is getting better, but the two hander is still my normal stroke.

One thing that has always confused me...I've had pros tell me that the left hand should be dominant, and other pros tell me the right should be dominate. Right now, like I stated above, the left hand is doing most of the work, and I'll practice left-handed forehands to help improve my 2HBH. But I've never understood the pros/cons of either way.

Best oversized and mid-plus racquets for the 2HBH:
Any Radical OS, particularly the Radical Trysis OS and Radical Twin Tube OS.
No comment on midplus.

Should backhand be right-hand or left-hand dominant?
Whatever is your dominant hand should be more dominant.

How often do you use a 1HBH slice?
Anytime the ball is too low to get under and then when the situation calls for it. I try and minimize my use of slice though

Do you tend to stay at the baseline or come to the net when possible?
If the opportunity arises, I'm at the net ASAP to finish off a point. A lot of the time my cross court backhand is great set up shot to close the net on.

Preferred backhand gripping.. L/R hand combo (semi-conti, east-east, east-conti, etc.)
Dominant hand - continental, Non-dominant - eastern

Do you 2HBH folks use racquets that are head heavy or head light?
My Radicals are 6 pts. HL stock. I add 2 inches of lead starting at the third cross which equals about 4 grams. No idea what the balance is now, but I prefer something around 3-5 pts. HL.

Maybe I can join your club as I'm a 2 hander when I hit with the left hand, but I am a 1 hander when I use my right hand. I still can't do a one handed slice with the lefty yet as I'm a natural righty, but my lefty 2 handed backhand is just as good as those who've been playing double handed for years. Maybe it's because of my baseball days.

i'm a two hander with the right hand dominant. been using it since i heard what agassi had to say about using the right hand. its been working alteast 3 times as good as when i used my left hand dominant for 3 yrs. anyways i'm using the agassi limited racquet, and its pretty heavy, so it helps my backhand but hurts my forehand.. so i'm switching back to the roddick areo drive plus. i say grip the racquet and swing ALMOST like a left handed baseball swing. don't over think it, just do it. brush up on the ball, or flatten it out. whatever just do it. don't make it harder than it is.

I played that type of backhand for a long time. Actually, I was quite aggressive with it. He might call your backhand defensive in that you are likely hitting flat with it. And if you hit flat, you have little margin for error and likely are hitting soft to compensate.

That grip is okay if you stroke up and through the ball. The disadvantage is that your right wrist's mobility is severely limited. And the tendency is that your right hand will death grip the handle and put you in awkward spots when charging the net or slicing.

Left-hand eastern/right-hand continental is probably a better grip for your particular backhand. And if you have to slice, your right hand is already in the correct grip to do so.

When I began learning the 2HBH, it seemed natural to me using more of the right hand. However, as time went by, unconsciously, I started using more and more of the left hand. If I could put it in percentage, I would say that nowadays, my left hand does about 70-80% of the job. Personally, it seems like it's easier to direct the ball when your left hand is dominant, asides from being slightly easier to hit short crosscourt shots. This is just my opinion. I'm sure there are other people with dominant right hands that have just as good or better backhands.

Grip-wise, I think most people use Continental with the right hand, and so do I. However, the Continental grip that I use on my backhand is not the same one I use when volleying or serving. The index knuckle is still on bevel #2, however, I turn my heel pad more towards the backhand side so that it sort of resembles a Continental one-handed backhand grip instead of a pistol Continental grip (If you know what I mean). I use an eastern forehand grip with my top hand. I really think this grip encourages you to unconsciously lay back the left wrist so that you brush up the ball without thinking about it. Again, this is just from my personal experience.

I mostly hit the 2HBH from a closed stance or a neutral stance whenever possible. The only times when I hit it from an open stance are when I'm either on the run or when returning serves. If I'm on the run and I see the opponent not rushing the net, I usually hit a couple slices because my on-the-run backhand isn't great.

I use a 2hbh and I've been using it since i first picked up tennis.

to answer your questions
-best 2hbh racquet to me is the nblade mp
-i only use the 1hbh slice if the ball is really low
-i stay at baseline most of the time

I've created this thread for us two-hand backhand users. Here we can provide feedback and opinions on issues that pertain to our proud stroke.

Questions I have to start this off:
Best oversized and mid-plus racquets for the 2HBH
Should backhand be right-hand or left-hand dominant?
How often do you use a 1HBH slice?
Do you tend to stay at the baseline or come to the net when possible?
Preferred backhand gripping.. L/R hand combo (semi-conti, east-east, east-conti, etc.)

Feel free to join in, my fellow 2HBH friends!
My 2 hand backhand is my best shot! Forehand technique is just too open for interpretation. It's so free that it's hard to restrict myself to perfect technique. With a 2hbh, there's not so much room for interpretation because of the two hands and the required shoulder turn, etc. I especially like to hit a decent forehand angle crosscourt and then burn the next ball crosscourt with my backhand. Anyway...
Best racquets? I haven't tried enough racquets to specify any in particular. I will say that my old PDR+ turned my backhand to mush.
My 2hbh is 50/50... I don't use a dominant left or right hand. I swing with both arms equally as I turn my shoulders into the ball.
1hbh slice-- I use it when I get a really high ball to my backhand or a really low one. The 2hbh is pretty restrictive, so it's imperative that you have a 1hbh slice.
It's not my goal to get to the net, but if I think that it's necessary to come to the net to end a point, I'll do it. I volley with a 1hbh.
I haven't done any research on 2hbh grips. I'm afraid that it'll make me self-conscious and I'll unknowingly change my grip. What I do works very well for me, so I'll stick with it.

For some odd reason I was in a mood to buy cheap mid-plus racquets last night. Bought a Dunlop Quadro 102 and a Dunlop Tempo Comp Ti. Love my m-Fil 200+, so these will probably be practice or doubles racquets. Looks like I'm a Dunlop fan.

Anyway, I tried hitting with a right-dominant mindset yesterday and I kind of hurt my arm in the process. I think going along the lines of 50/50 power from each arm is the way to go. This way not much force is needed to generate spins and angles while it should be easier for me to step in and pound the ball.

The LH-dominant approach got me into a lot of trouble against a quality opponent recently. After that match I was actually practicing using a 1HBH. I can hit balls in with a 1HBH so moving to a 50/50 approach should be okay for me.

Yes I do that too. I didn't think any pros did it - does Sharapova really do that?

Even though my former instructor thought my forehand wasn't so great, he agreed that "I had a very good driving backhand and there was nothing he would do to change it."

I used to use the Wilson HH 5.3 OS, it was a great backhand racquet as I could always get the extreme angle as well as DTL, that it, until I started hitting the ball harder...

I don't usually backhand slice, but I have an effective dropshot though...

My backhand is right-hand dominant, since I play lefty...

I mostly stay at the baseline and hit the winner when there is a clear opportunity but I will come to the net if the rally calls for it...

I'll almost always hit an aggressive Eastern/Eastern (or sometimes Extreme Eastern, if I want some spin action) backhand with an extreme angle...

I may be part of this club while left handed, but I'm definitely in the one hander's club when I play right handed.

I put it in the same category as serving underhanded because you don't have a reliable topspin 2nd serve.

You are giving up on improving at the expense of winning today.

What are the pros and cons of the different grip combinations on the 2BH? I was shadow swinging and I think i can manage with both hands in the eastern grip rather than right hand continental and left hand eastern.

That's my two-hander grip exactly, the continental for the right hand is supposed to be so that, anytime you are stretched out, you can hit a one-handed backhand.

Racquet Jedi is right about the continental grip. It is also that way in case you need to slice the ball.

L-R hand combos:
Eastern-Eastern is an aggressive stroke that tends to be hit quite flat. Like the Eastern forehand, there's not much margin for error unless you generate a bit of spin. You really have to step into the ball to take advantage of this grip. The cons of this grip include the tendency to death grip the right hand which makes it awkward when changing grips to go to the net or to slice. Also vulnerable to low balls.

Semiwestern-Continental is common for those that want heavy topspin. I use this grip combo, though I may mix it up with the eastern-continental combo. This combination requires much use of the left hand. It does great for generating spin and cross angles. Also very good for lobs. However it is more difficult to drive through the ball. And to get heavy topspin it can take quite a lot of energy. Not the best combination to use when on the run. Many of the WTA players use this combination (not sure about the ATP).

Eastern-Continental is a middle-of-the-road solution. You can drive the ball as well as get good topspin. I don't use this grip often, so I'm not an expert with it. This and the semi-conti combo are taught more often by instructors. In both cases the continental hand helps stabilize the stroke and can elevate your racquet position upon contact, giving you clearance that an Eastern right hand couldn't do.

That's just my take on the 3 common 2HBH grips. I've even played with a L-R combination of Semiwestern-Eastern and Eastern-semiwestern. :)

I use mostly my off hand in my 2 hand backhand. I believe in left handed/off handed forehands as a good way to help your 2 hand backhand.

The grip I use on my off hand (left hand) is the pancake/SW grip and the right is eastern.

Thanks racquet jedi and soyizgood for the information! Does anyone have any examples of the pros that utilize the different two handed backhand grips? I like to see the different grips in action and at their highest potential. Thank you so much.

1. oversize - probably the POG. but i don't have much experience with oversize rackets. the most recent one i used is the yonex vcon17 os but that was 3 or 4 years ago. i found it a bit too powerful.
midplus - i'm currently using a babolat pure storm, which is a head-light racket. i should say that it wasn't love at first backhand, but now, my 2hbh is as good as it ever was.

2. i think my 2-hander is equally dependent on both right and left hands. i'm right handed. i think there are instances when the left hand does more work than the right hand and vice versa. i feel that when i'm hitting a defensive shot, the left hand does a little more work.

3. i slice about 20% of the time. my one-handed slice is really good. in fact, if i am up against a player who doesn't like low balls, i would slice up to 50% of the time.

4. this past year, i worked on coming to the net on short balls. i also worked on serving and volleying in doubles. it's a work in progress, but i think i'm much more well-rounded now than in years past, when i was really a counterpunching baseliner. definitely, i feel that my volley and overhead are more reliable. everyone i play with tells me i should continue doing what i'm doing now, which is to be more aggressive and go to the net more.

5. grip - right hand: continental; left hand: eastern forehand grip. this is usually seen as a grip for flat backhands. i do hit good flat backhands but i don't have any trouble generating good topspin with this grip combo. but i can't really generate super-heavy topspin. i also like this combo because it is easy to shift to my one-handed slice by simply taking the left hand off the racket.

Why does anyone find A-Rod's sweating comical?
It just tells me that he is putting out his best effort.

I use the 2HBH to place a deep flat ball, I cant seem to get that spinny ball that can comefrom my FH wing =[.
I can only put the spin w/ my 1HBH which is horrible haha.

deep and flat for me no matter how much i try to add topspin i just get enough to get the ball deep and after it bounces pretty flat since the ball doesnt travel to high after it hits the ground. i know people who can add alot of topspin on 1 1h backhands but i dont think i know anyone with a 2hander with alot of spin

1. I don't feel qualified to answer that since I've only used a cheap Target racquet and my Radical so far.

2. I would also say my BH's dominant hand would depend on the shot I'm hitting, usually it's right if I'm hitting cross-court.

3. I use my slice whenever I want to throw some variety out or sometimes if there's a low ball.

4. Mostly baseline, but I've been working on coming to the net more often after working on my volleys.

And please add me to the club.

Questions I have to start this off:

1. Best oversized and mid-plus racquets for the 2HBH? I use my TF 325, luv it for my 2 hander

2. Should backhand be right-hand or left-hand dominant? Left hand dominant

3. How often do you use a 1HBH slice? 50% of my backhands

4. Do you tend to stay at the baseline or come to the net when possible? Depends on the player. I consider myself a baseliner. If i play a moonballer i will net rush.

5. Preferred backhand gripping.. L/R hand combo (semi-conti, east-east, east-conti, etc.) Semi-Continental

ps. I also am known for my backhand drop shots and cross court acute angles from the baseline.

soyizgood

I can generate good topspin from the baseline and get angles when I'm not hurried. When I am on the run, I'll either hit a deep shot to the near sideline or I'll hit a high spinny shot cross-court shot so I can recover. I only slice when I want to change upthe pace or it would not be an advantage to hit with a flat or topspin stroke. On occasion I'll slice to approach the net on the opponent's forehand side. My backhand is good enough for me to approach the net with a deep, flat cross-court shot.

Next question:
Do you use your 2HBH to attack with heavy topspin or with deep flat placement more often?

usually deep flat placement. but i'm also working on hitting the severe angle with heavy topspin. another option is to attack behind a one-handed sliced approach shot.
