USTA Singles League

Here in the Raleigh area they just started a USTA Summer Singles League. Is this nationwide? If you live in a different area, is your local chapter running a Singles league? It involves a weekly match w/ 3 singles matches, max 7 people on a team. Was wondering how widespread this new league is, or if we were just finally getting around to picking it up...

Wow it sounds like we may be ahead of hte curve! There are 3 leagues that I know of in the Triangle, one for Raleigh, Durham, and Cary... Sounds like the Southern section is the only one doing this so far. Glad to see it take off in Asheville too... if the Triad or Charlotte can get it going, maybe we could actually have a state playoff at some point.

Norcal is introducing something call Flex Leagues which appears to be like a singles league. Does anyone know if they are the same thing?

We have already finished ours in Greensboro NC, except for the after season playoff between the #1 and #2 teams.

This is the second year we have had one in Greensboro. Ours have been during the summer mixed season, which I like as some of us would rather play singles than mixed doubles. There is going to be a city wide playoff of all the divisions this sunday with a party given by the local USTA for all players that were in the singles league. It has been very popular here in Greensboro.

My understanding is that there is no state wide championship planned but the winners of some cities playing others for regional playoffs. The winner of Greensboro is supposed to play the winner from Winston, which has not finished their season. I have also looked at our winner playing the winner of the Raleigh/Cary/Durham singles league.

At this point my team has finished the regular season undefeated, but we have to play a very strong team from the Burlington area on Sunday.

We have a Singles League here in Richmond, VA. It is new as of this year, the 1st summer season just ended, and I got an email about the Fall league a couple days ago:

The 2007 Fall Richmond Singles League season will start September 16th.
The deadline to register is September 2nd. Registration forms are
available on the Fall 2007 Singles League page on the local league
website, www.richmondtennisleagues.com.

I've changed some of the rules this season to make it easier for
players. Players will be allowed to have one sub (with the same rating)
per season to cut down on forfeits and injury issues. The rules will be
posted by early next week. Those will give additional information.

Please forward this to anyone who may be interested in playing in the
singles league.

Thanks.

stout bump dude!

we have a singles flex league in sc here. it is pretty good. team of three players at least (each match is three singles positions), you can play anytime during a week time period, and there is a state tournament. I really enjoy it for the exercise, flexible scheduling, and the state tourney at isle of palms is icing on the cake.

ours is in the summer between mixed and combo. check with you local league coordinator about your league and do it.

We had a singles league here in the Richmond metro area last year too. I did not play in it (logistics) but a good friend was a captain. It was also in the Summer but it wasn't as flexible as wrx describes. It was an established night (4.0s on Mon, 3.5s on Tues, etc) but most of the captains seemed accommodating (if necessary). It DID count towards your NTRP.

If you're looking for opportunities to play singles, regardless of NTRP, this is it.

We have two summer leagues, one runs in winter (starting now), and the other is fall.

Post season play does go to districts (which is 'states' for us). And yes, it does count toward a player's NTRP.

It has been very, very well received in this area (especially the women's leagues...men only have one league per year), and has grown considerably since it started two years ago.

Anyone played in singles league? How does it work? Do they make teams? I would love to join - i just don't enjoy doubles at all. :(

in NC it works just like other USTA leagues. There is a summer singles league that for the first time ever in 2011 had a state championship. Still a team format, three courts. I think there was a fall league as well but no states for that one. Here in the Southern Section most of the states don't yet have a singles league championship so as of yet there is no sectional to advance to. Winning states is as far as you can go at this point. Other sections may be different.

I saw they still have old information up on the site for singles league. Sounds good though, singles is a great exercise.

LOL! Ummm, yes, well, it was a looong day at work!

We have two seasons per year...winter and fall.

Our league is supposed to start a singles league this summer. I wonder if it will impact participation in your league. A lot of players in our state cross the river for the chance to play singles.

And, of course, our league is way better for singles because we get two hours instead of ninety minutes.

: sticks out tongue :

Are you sure that's an advantage?

I don't think it will impact it much since they are different times. Now I know where to go for my singles fix during summer.

I think it's a great idea.

What I'd like even more would be a "small team" league, consisting of two singles and one doubles. I think this would bring a lot of new captains and players into leagues. I think a lot of people have a group of players they hang out with who could fill 4 player roster + subs. A full usta league (2 singles and 3 doubles) means you need at least 16 people to consistently field a team without defaults, which is out of range for most people.

3 singles would work, but I think adding one dubs would be a little better, since there are a lot of people who prefer dubs to singles.

I started a singles league (non USTA) here in my town. Its a club league and we've got 6 teams, play em 3 teams each for a 15 week season, ending with a semi final bracket.

Its open level, we've had some high D1 level guys playing, Wednesday eve's and 6 singles matches per team. Its a bunch of fun and is progressing smoothly.

Got sick of only having doubles league in summer, so this has been great!

Apparently it's a regional thing (or section/district thing, to be precise). We don't have USTA singles leagues here in CO (I wish we did). But we do have what you call "small team" league, in this exact format: 2 singles + 1 doubles. Actually we have two such leagues: one in the spring (called "Trio"), and one in the late summer-fall ("Twilight"). This is in addition to the "regular" league (2 singles + 3 doubles) which runs in-between, May through July. No USTA leagues (and very few tournaments) from October through March here, due to the climate and lack of indoor capacity
