Venus and Serena Williams will face WTA Tour suspensions for their continued boycott of the Indian Wells tournament where they were booed in 2001 under new 2009 WTA rules announced Wednesday. They have told WTA chief executive Larry Scott that they will continue to skip the event anyway...

The Williams sisters boycott stems from a 2001 Indian Wells semi-final when Serena was scheduled to meet sister Venus to decide who would play Belgian Kim Clijsters in the final. Venus backed out at the last minute with a knee injury, causing many to question the motives for the pullout. Serena was booed in the final...

Should the Williams sisters skip the event and refuse to appear, they would be suspended in 2010 for two premier events on the calendar following Indian Wells. That would drop them from Miami and Madrid events in 2010. By taking zero points for Indian Wells, and Miami and Madrid in 2010, it would be hard for the Williams sisters to remain highly ranked...

Something I don't quite get: the article says that if they skip Indian Wells in 2009, then the suspension would be enforced in the next two calendar events in 2010. Why not enforce it immediately, at the 2009 Miami and Madrid events?

Why does one have to play an event that she gets booed in? A person has a bad experience with a product or a person, and decides not associate with that anymore... doesn't that happen in our daily lives?

It is because playing the WTA is not a personal choice, but the fulfillment of a commercial contract. Like not showing up for work after signing off that you would.

If they can prove in a court that the risks of bodily harm (by attacks) and mental trauma (by booing) due to racism are compelling, the judge can rule their way and force the WTA to exempt them. Otherwise, they will have to play or face suspensions.

^^ I believe Master Series event (or however they're called in the WTA) are mandatory for top ranked players.

this is ridiculous, I attend Indian Wells every year and have always enjoyed the perk of not having to see the sisters.

Hah, that's funny. I too attend IW every year and enjoy it immensely. Really didn't think why, but now I know. Don't miss them at all, and have no desire to watch them play.

I'm pretty sure there is a way that they can avoid a suspension. They just have to make a public appearance in the area. Larry Scott said it's pretty hard to be suspended under the new rules.

Yes, but the public appearance requires them to speak well about the event, and the Williams' have already said they will speak what is on their mind, which may not be what the event wants. It will be difficult for the event if they speak disparagingly of the event, as it would raise tough legal issues about what is meant by endorsing the event vs speaking what is on your mind.

Why wold they want to make a public appearance in an area teeming with millionaire retired rednecks, hollywood hardcore republican fossils and similar ilk who don't want to see them there at all?

I'm with you guys on this one. I was there when Serena got boo'd, at first I was a little upset at the reaction of the crowd, but then also knew where they were coming from. Every year since that incident I feel the Indian Wells tourney doesn't need the sisters. The suspension isn't going to really do anything anyways just put them as lower seeds in the Slams, which will 5uck for some of the other competitors.

Stepping on the court so the fans dont get a refund and they collect prize money is pathetic, but nothing is below the sista's.

The more the ignorant posters learn about the reality of the situation the quicker they will understand why the fans were mad.

Had nothing todo with race, had todo with them showing up and dishing out $400 for tickets only to find out the sisters had no intention of ever playing. Wasting 20k peoples time and money.

Andre did the same thing when he hurt his toe sleeping the night before they refused to let him play the night match.

IW doesn't want them and they don't want to appear, what's the problem?

It was fine for the following tournament in key biscane where she won, so what do you think?

She also claimed an injury that is impossible to prove (tendonitious) unless you get an mri.

Bunch of bs only a fool would believe. Lucky for her i guess :)
