Was AO 2012 the greatest run ever by a champ?

HailDjokovic

Semi-Pro
Giraldo
Mahut
Hewitt
Ferrer
Andy Murray(nearly 5 hour match)
Nadal(nearly 6 hour match)

Couple all that with intense heat and humidity, was that one of the most impressive wins in a grand slam?

One of the best in recent memory but just in recent memory I can think of at least a couple that were more impressive. Ivanisevic's run to start with is right up there, also Nadal's 2013 French Open run where he beat Fognini, Nishikori, Wawrinka, Djokovic and Ferrer was pretty crazy.

That's only six matches. You forgot Lorenzi, the 1R victim 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

It was a great pair of matches to beat both Murray and Nadal in five but he was fresh enough for that sequence due to avoiding any seeded player until the QFs. Hewitt and Mahut eliminated Stepanek, Roddick and Raonic, making the run to the second week a lot easier.

Is this meant to be a serious question? What he accomplished those last two rounds was certainly remarkable. That's about it.

More worshiping of the Terror of Tennis. With all the talk about his past and future achievements, his recent USO win seems more like a side note.

Last two rounds possible the greatest feats of semi-final - final combination. But up to that point there's nothing special about it.

Beating two seeded Frenchmen, a GOAT and the #1-ranked player in 12 of 14 sets played from R16 on makes Wawrinka's RG'15 run much more impressive.

Stan's FO and AO runs are both impressive than what Novak achieved. Stan defeated Berdych, Rafa and Novak at AO and Fed,Tsonga and Novak at FO.

Just because you took 5 sets to beat the big players does not make it impressive. As regards the match time, please provide stats on the actual match play time. It is more impressive to finish against even better players in shorter number of sets.

The finals and semis were incredible quality too. I guess if you nitpick Nadal probably played better in 2009 and Djokovic probably a bit better in 2011, but both Nadal and Djokovic were near their best in that enthralling final and it went back and forth until the end. The 2012 Australian Open semis is IMO Murray's best slam match ever arguably despite losing, and Djokovic needed to bring his best to outlast him. I have never seen him hit so many winners against Djokovic as he did that match. Just incredible all around from all 3. Federer was also very good, but was never going to beat an in form Nadal in a slam at that point.

Pretty much this. There are better over-all 7 match runs, but not many better SF-F combos.

Specifically I think that final is probably the greatest performance I have ever seen. To go 5 hours of baseline tennis in the SF (after which Murray claimed he could not WALK for 3 days) and then come out (on short rest) and beat Nadal in a 6 hour final after being down a break in the 5th was legendary.

It certainly is right up there, and one of the greatest Major finals in history especially.

Yep, the contrasting styles between those two players made those 6 hours extremely bearable. The 2 hours consumed with excessive use of the towel, Nadal fixing his bottles, hair, ears, face, itchy rectum etc. and Djokovic bouncing the fluff off each ball, changing his shoes, applying eye drops etc. was very impressive. The other 4 hours of serve and volley v baseline play and vice-versa was just phenomenal. I just hope whoever replaces Djokovic, Nadal and Murray (hopefully sooner rather than later) at the top don't waste as much time and don't only come to the net just to shake hands.

AO 2012 Murray / Nadal for a total of 11 hours play was certainly impressive
US open 1992 look good on paper even though I was too young to watch tennis so I have no idea of the level of Lendl and Krajicek at that time
French open 2013 Nadal went through a tough draw definitely
Davydenko / Kiefer / Baghdatis is up there too

Is this one of the most embarrassing threads for decent Djokovic fans ever? I'll let them answer that.

Ah, yes. The same tournament where Djokovic dropped a set to a way past his prime Hewitt, ranked well outside the top 100, battling injuries and poor form. Really, that match and the ones before it shouldn't even be mentioned.. it just makes Djokovic's run seem weaker.

In reality his performance in the SF/F was mighty impressive.. some of the most impressive tennis I have seen. But in regard to the "greatest run ever"? Please..

I think Andre's title run in 1995 or even 2000 are about as impressive. Pete was in great form in 1995 in particular.
