Watching Nadal vs. Agassi

I never knew they ever played before and I happen to find it on youtube
ITs the 2005 final of the Rogers Cup. I am totally shocked that they played !!

Nadal crushed him the first set with huge serves and backhand winners.

I will keep you posted on the second set but don't look good for Agassi.

Few days ago I watched Agassi beat the crap out of MAC in the 1992 Wimbledon Semifinals-.

YouTube is better than the Tennis Channel.

Been on an Agassi binge lately. Watched Agassi and Blake from 05 US open a few days ago.
The Sampras loses are too painful to ever re-watch . Also saw Agassi-Fed from 05 US final last week.

No spoilers but Agassi looks pretty damn good.
Why is NADAL wearing Pirate shorts as they literally come down to his ankles ?? He might as well wear long pants lol
I've seen the match already dude.

Agassi was always pretty good because of his huge weapons (forehand + backhand).

Nadal also wore sleeveless shirts back then.

Loved Moya - Nadal matches too; it was like mentor VS student.

The capris are vintage Nadal. I wish Nike would make him look like a pirate again.

Well, HAHA.. Agassi is up 5-4 in the Second and I have no idea who wins but I am about 90 percent sure its NADAL because the tape is only 20 min longer lol

Lol, funny how you're reporting this as if it's happening live while pretty much everyone must have seen it already. They also played in Wimbledon by the way in 2006, but I don't think it was much of an interesting match. Too bad Nadal never played Sampras, would've been fun to watch.

Its live to me damn it !!! lol
NADAL totally destroyed him in the 3rd set. Agassi making tons of errors and NADAL raised his game.
Agassi really looked bad in the 3rd and was annoyed by everything

Agassi playing to the crowd early on IIRC, making a big deal about how Rafa was taking his sweet time to get off his chair and start the first set lol... Always thought Andre played a lot with gamesmanship as well though, seemed to hold his arms up between first and second serves far more than what's usually seen. Was also very dramatic when he didn't like a line call, got the crowd involved a lot there too....

Agassi complained a number of times in the 3rd set that Nadal was taking to long on his serve, but Nadal is allowed 20 seconds

This should be in the spoilers section

Agassi is really 3 different eras
Early Agassi back in the late 80s and early 90s would just go for broke.
Mid Agassi in the mid 90s was very aggressive but more consistent
Best Agassi was older and very consistent and patient

I did like that US open match in the late 80s of Connors and Agassi.

Why are you posting about a 12 year old match that most tennis fans have already seen? Post it on the 'former pro' forum.

I remember that singled handed backhand shot that Nadal blasts during the Wimbledon warm up before their match.

Did you catch that bh winner from Agassi though? A high ball from Nadal and Agassi takes it right off the bounce for a winner. That’s really a shot only he could hit

Nadal vs. Peak Agassi (definitely pre-2005), in a parallel universe, would be fun to watch!

I think Agassi would play him with his toes on the baseline, taking those Nadal spinny forehands on the rise.

Peak Agassi actually had the type of game that could give Nadal a lot of trouble.

Agassi always had trouble with Chang and Hewitt though -- Nadal plays similar to them but with more power.

Would have loved to see Agassi of AO 95 v Nadal of AO 09

What a match that would be. And for those who did not watch tennis in 95, and don't know what peak Agassi on HC is truly capable of...well, this would be one match for the ages.

Let's solve that problem!

Bandana Agassi of the mid 90s was just a ruthless fighting machine. Loved watching him in 95 going blow for blow with Sampras.
Around this time I loved Chang a lot though. Wanted more success for the little warrior with the heart of a lion.

Chang was red hot back then too. Semis and finals of HC majors. He had the best quads of any player around at the time.
Too bad about that '96 US Open final. Could have gotten to #1 too if he won, but alas, Sampras awaited in the final.

Also thought I'd include a good match from 2000 (still peak Andre to me to be honest).

Sampras was just too hungry at USO 96, after losing Wimbledon, he was determined not to end the year slamless and when he got past Corretja, I knew no one was stopping him.

Agree that 2000 was still peak Andre, he was making up for lost time.

Sampras was too hungry, I agree. He wanted to become the greatest player ever and he wasn't letting Chang stop him.

Chang was a very hard worker and tried his best but Sampras was just on a different plateau when it came to talent.

Losing Wimbledon was eating away at Sampras, I remember at the end of the year, they were interviewing him and wanted to talk about his remarkable USO 96 win, and all spoke about was being disappointed for losing Wimbledon. It was first time since he started truly hitting his stride that he had to settle for a single slam season during the height of his powers 93, 94, 95 and 97 were all multi slam seasons. He said he used that to fuel his USO 96 campaign.

I think he put a lot of energy into winning Roland Garros that year. He simply ran out of gas against Kafelnikov after a miracle run to the SF. He was emotionally and mentally broken come Wimbledon and he recovered during that USO run the same year.

Another good match from prime Andre.

I remember watching this live and thinking how impressive it was, because Hewitt was looking unstoppable at that time, he was solid world number one, had won two of the last four slams including Wimbledon. I knew at that point that Agassi still had another slam in him at that point...he did it a few months later.

I was thinking Agassi was going to challenge for #1 after this match but then he fell to Sampras. In 2003 he did reach #1 again (for the last time) with an impressive leadup including making the US Open final, winning the Australian Open and winning Miami. It was probably his last great prime stretch.

Yes, he did. I think the match against Courier really finished him off, coming back from two sets down. Then when he lost that tie break in the semis, he was done. After that, he never wanted to risk his chances at Wimbledon again.

Adjusting for different surfaces was a lot harder back then too, so it was like Sampras had to choose. Risk it on a surface he could be upset on or kind of tank and go for glory at Wimbledon which was a tournament that really favored Sampras' style of play?

Sampras was a smart man. He knew the answer.

I had a feeling Sampras was going to be a step too far at that edition of the USO for Agassi. Pete just had air about him, similar to Fed this year in AO.

It's funny how similar those two tournaments are; the 2017 AO and 2002 USO.

Nadal was like Agassi back then. Roger of course was like Pete.

At the end of the day, he tried it a few times, pre 96, only 95 was when he fell in first round at RG. But after the 96 experiment, he knew it was not worth the risk of losing at Wimbledon.

Agassi could definitely trouble him on a fast HC, but his movement wasn't the greatest, nor did he really have a big game (I.e. Big serve and volley). I feel like over the course of a match (especially in a best of 5), Agassi would struggle with his service games since Nadal at his best was a better server than Andre at his best. Rafa would also be able to get him on the run quite a bit which would be the worst case scenario for Andre. The reason why similar players like Djokovic have played Nadal so successfully on a HC is because Nole can stay with Nadal physically throughout the whole match due to his endurance and movement, while also being able to step in and punishing the ball. Andre didn't have enough of the former to truely be able to cause Nadal major issues.
