OOOOHH im SO SO agree that Western grip can be unnatural to certain people's physique. It is for me. My arm/wrist feels too twisted to hit with this grip that it either has no power or is very hurtful.

Long live SW!!!!

If the 2 handed backhand is just like a forehand with the off-hand, what is the difference that causes injuries?

The non-dominant hand/arm is often not as strong as the dominant hand/arm, thus less protection against injuries.

Of course you expect a higher frequencies of injuries in non-dominant hand for 2-handers.
If you actually use your left hand (2-handed shots), your left hand has a higher chance of injury.
If you put up more load on your right hand (1-hander backhands), your right hand has a higher chance of injury.

The likelihood of injury is directly proportional to how much you use it.

Maybe my technique is different, but I can pound 2HBHs all day, and I've never had a twinge of trouble with my left wrist. As far as I can tell, most of the pace on the shot comes from rotating your body.

However, my right wrist can give me trouble on forehands if I play more than 3 sets of singles or 6 sets of doubles in a short period of time. (I use an Eastern grip.)

As someone mentioned, I don't see why these women who hit so flat would use a Western grip. Are there any pro women who use Eastern grips?

she doesnt use a full western. she uses a grip slightly close to semi-western but closer to easter. most people dont know what a full wester grip is.

oh and sharapova uses an eastern grip not semiwestern.

I hope that is not a serious post

its fairly obvious what grip sharapova uses.....you can tell when she does that painful finish on the same side

Sania might go for surgery for chronic wrist problem
INDIANA WELLS(California): India’s Sania Mirza faces a scan and possible surgery after a chronic wrist problem flared during her pre quarterfinal loss to Slovak Daniela Hantuchova at the Indian Wells Masters.

The number 32 went down 1-6, 6-7 (4-7) Tuesday to title holder Hantuchova before revealing her fitness worry.

Sania, 21, blames the recurring problem on her tennis grip.

"I have a very western grip on my forehand, that’s why I have the wrist problem.
Either I change my grip, which I’m not going to do, or I probably have to get surgery.

"I’ve actually had it (injury) for a few days now since we have been playing in the wind. I have something going on and off with the wrist," she said.

"It was fine, I hit 45 minutes yesterday. But (during the match) I hit a late forehand on one of her returns and then the very next point I hit another very late forehand.

"I couldn’t press the button on the (exercise) bike just now, so it’s very, very sore right now," she said.

Sania, however, said that if she does have to resort to a medical procedure, it wouldn’t happen anytime soon.

"It usually doesn’t get this sore, so I’m a little worried right now. It gets sore and then it gets okay when I ice it.

"I’m going to try and push it as much as I can, obviously. I’m going to get an MRI (scan) next couple of days," she said.

"I’m almost like defying nature every time I hit a forehand because I have a very extreme grip. But I’ve been doing it for the last 16 years of my life, playing like this. It’s a big step to even change it half an inch because my game is my forehand.

"I will if I have to but I would obviously like to look at other options before that," she added.

I like that she chose surgery over a grip change lol...thats sticking with your guns...stupid...she should blame her coach for techniques that would ruin her career...i hate it when promising kids become victims to impropper teaching!

The worst part about these extreme grips is that it creates very one dimensional players that just hit as hard as they can with no variety.

That's why so few players actually play the net these days, the grip switch is so extreme that volleying becomes unnatural.

Hence Roddick looking awkward at the net and most women hitting swinging volleys more often than not.
