What’s the #1 thing to be successful in life?

As only you can answer that question, you will just have to accept an aleatoric condition.

Not afraid to admit, I've never seen that word. "Governed by chance" in my little desk Webster.

I used the word "besmirch" today in conversation. Was pretty proud of that. Got a laugh from my tennis friends.

Success is definited different for each person! For some, the goal is to be rich, for others it to have a great family and others it to make an impact on the world to make it a better place for future generations. You can have it ll too. Just know what you want before you begin or else you will be lost and unhappy in your life’s journey. Do what makes you happy is first primary goal in life since you will be doing it on a daily basis for a long time. Most people do not think about this before the start their vocation. Then after 40, it pretty hard to chance your course if you are married and have children.

I’d say first is being happy with what you have, but second would be being happy with the small successes and achievements. I don’t feel sad about the fact I can’t run for hours on end, I feel happy with my small achievements like adding on to my distance per run, or how fast my mileage is. Though happiness is personal to how you define it, I think everyone can be happy.

I didn't say you could answer the question. I said only you could answer the question. If you can't answer it, then no one else can do it for you. it's your question. At most you'll see what others think or do.
I am hopeless now.

Interesting that for you "success" equates to "happiness."

The OP asks questions with words he can't even define.

Like asking how to achieve the racquet drop when you have never held a racquet.
I already said I am (totally) lost.
After I analyze all the posts of this thread, I will only determine if I am successful or not.

I don’t have a clue about this.
I just received this question in an email from Quora.

Never be afraid of failure, and give 110 % in all endeavors. But problem with too many americans is that they are Lazy so they only give about 70 % of their effort and sometimes they don't even try due to fear of failure

It’s good I’m not just an American. I’m a South American. Let’s say I give a 75%.

Interesting. I prefer happiness to success. At least, happiness is a truer notion, isn’t it?
Perfect. Happiness. Let's figure this out before you juxtapose it with something you don't know. Lets focus on what you do know. So let's have it. What is happiness to you?

According to classical political economy, money is the universal equivalent. The measure against which everything can be measured if measurable.

From my limited reading of anthropology, a lot of societies have selected out a measure of some sort. The kula in Melanesia is a famous example.
A monetary unit—of any sort—is merely a convenience.

And pursuit of it (or acquisition of same) is a means to an end.

Success is applying your God-given talents to their full potential. In other words, play your hand in the best way possible. Nobody is really successful completely, but some people are more successful than others.
What is "success" for a terminal case?

Cessation of pain?

I think living with pain is always preferable to not living at all. Survival is always a success. Though I can imagine in extreme cases this might be hard to rationalize.
Well, I've been on death's doorstep. Excruciating, indescribable pain.

Makes you find "success" in all manner of places. Simple solutions to problems... actualization of ideas... pushing beyond boundaries. It's endless.

contrast this with OP's idea of success:

"Success is how people look at you"

So you can be successful when you are dead?

According to OP, Van Gogh is successful because we look at him that way, nevermind his thankless unrealized life. Survival is irrelevant according to OPs worldview. Your state of mind let alone physical state is meaningless, only we decide how we look at you.

Again the standard that constitutes success OP will not or can not define but he wants us to help him get to a point he doesnt know.

What is the fastest way to get to my destination?

Well, son, where are you going?

I don't know.

Thought you would have said something like, "Being successful is scoring hot chicks."

what exactly are you asking..the definition of success i.e. what you need to have to be considered successful (money, cars etc.) or the main reason which leads to success?

I do know this, but that's the beauty of it. Given that he has no idea what successful means, he can at least collect a resource with which to experiment.

And although for most people it is a means to an end, for the capitalist it is an end in itself. And to be successful is often identified with being a tycoon like Bezos or Trump.

A monetary unit—of any sort—is merely a convenience.

And pursuit of it (or acquisition of same) is a means to an end.

Having lots of stuff when you die seems important
what's the point to have a lot of that stuff before the death, way better to have all of it when you're young to have enuff time to enjoy it by 100 percent:-D..there's a point (when die) only if to give it to your children

I admit that I had never seen the word before either. But I knew it’s meaning without having to look it up, as I was already familiar with the Spanish word for random. Since the OP’s first language is Spanish, I assume that the choice of an obscure English word with Latin roots was deliberate.
