What book are you reading?

All I see elsewhere at the moment are deleted posts, so ... bring it on, if you've now got the gumption!

Why don't you give us a short review about why yet another book about the 'cultural wars' is any different from the thousands that preceded it?

Absolutely you have alt right derangement syndrome. I read all perspectives unlike you Barty boy, I could even argue your side better than you.

This looks rather interesting. Britain has quite the talent for travel books. Part of the charms of empire, undoubtedly.

... which actually appears to be the 2nd half of this one:

it was a pleasant reading :)
the posture of the author wasn't too 'empire-biased' even you can (mildly) feel that if it was written during colonial times, of course.
she rathers chooses to focus on her contemplation of the (resplendiscent!) nature, her/our place in all this, and enjoys to be far from everything...

another british author (and other mountains) ;) at the moment :

Apparently her first book was all about hunting and featured the death of her father by lion.

This led to somewhat of a more chastened view of wildlife.

Maybe her French-Swiss father was the real great white hunter of the family.

In any event, her three books all look fascinating.

Legend
Wonderful book I read over the weekend. Paul Kalanithi writes a memoir about his life and illness, battling stage IV metastatic lung cancer. It was published posthumously 10 months after he died at the age of 37.

Book I highly recommend: Pettis’ The Great Rebalancing. Very well written book on international macroeconomics that makes stellar use of accounting identities in its analysis of modern imbalances and their effects.

Pistor’s The Code of Capital is interesting too. Not sure to what extent I buy her characterisation of capital as whatever asset is coded in a certain way in the law, but she makes clear just how significant the law is in determining distributions of wealth and who bears the economic burden when things go bad. Quite insightful, even if you don’t agree with her central contention entirely.

I started with The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, in a Spanish translation.
I think I should have read it in the original English version.

“You” by Caroline Kepnes from the series “You“ on Netflix. 10/10, recommend, both book and series. 2nd series just came out on Boxing Day. Have yet to watch it yet but will once New Years is over with.

Gary Duane

G.O.A.T.

Just started it, can't tell you much yet but sound promising. I use audible because I write music and text hours every day, so I listen to rest my eyes.

I finished this whole series not long ago. Mostly a good read, light, guilty pleasure. Sort of like a more modern Equalizer, but the old one:

Oh a book I forgot to recommend, if you ever wanted to get a better grasp of statistical practice (be it scientific studies or deep learning algorithms) check out Spiegelhalter’s The Art of Statistics. Very readable and non-mathematical treatment of the topic.

You must've read Sir David Spiegelhalter's baby companion as well, below?

Afraid not, which book are you referring to? :)
Oops, I thought I've included the book cover, anyhow it is The Norm Chronicles: Stories and Numbers Anout Danger and Death. Co-written w/ Michael Blastland, treading in the vein of The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford, and Predictably Irrational: . . . by Dan Ariely.

You spent all your childhood in the bath with your mother playing ships and harbours, so you have the advantage on me when it comes to marine matters.
. .You've spent your adulthood in bathhouses going down on your brothers, so 'advantage you' when it comes to the Titanic.

. .And another thing: . lay off the mothers. . I just got off yours.

The Bitcoin standard - Saifedean Ammous

You will panic buy Bitcoin after reading it. Only the last 20-30% pages are about Bitcoin itself the biggest chunk is about the history of money - how something became a means of payment, why it didn't pass the test of time and why Bitcoin is the first thing in history that could actually do it.

A colleague lent me two of his three Mohsin Hamid books: (perhaps I'll read it this Sunday, else will return it pronto come Monday. I was more interested with the third book, Exit West)

1) Moth Smoke

and

2) The Reluctant Fundamentalist
I think I've said this before, but let me reiterate that your book reading efficiency is astonishing. You read in 1 weekend more books than @WhiskeyEE reads in one decade. Congrats!

My bookshop owner friend reads four a week, minimum. I'm really a slowpoke, however, I do keep a journal jotting down essential stuff.
Are you familiar with Good Reads? I mean the website.

Slowpoke? I think not! I like to read but I like to take my time. Anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks for me, not counting novellas.
